Most anticipated series of the Fall. The moment I heard TTGL and it's relation to KLK, it's in my schedule.

Still debating whether to watch this or not. Considering that this is made by the same people who made Gurren Lagann, so I'm a bit skeptical. Because well, Gurren Lagann was straight up garbage.

But the main character looks much much better than that little pansy Simon.

I'm sure there are some people who will prefer this type of protagonist and the story itself might well turn out differently, but overall I would imagine that Gurren Lagann will remain an inescapable influence. They're certainly not trying to hide this much in the promotional materials.

The TTGL influence will probably draw more than it pushes away. Like any anime, some people will dislike it (e.g. I never got into Steins Gate, which a lot considered the anime of the year for 2011), but it was pretty much universally acclaimed. For me, TTGL is in my top 3 all time list.

What's with the sudden backlash against Gurren Lagann? I've been seeing this a lot lately, especially on 4chan. Is it the animation style, or is it just a popularity thing?

Not sure. I guess some people dislike it because of its absurdity? TTGL was an anime created to defy all logic. If someone goes in expecting an ultra grounded and philosophical anime like Fate/Zero, they're going to be thoroughly disappointed. On the other hand, if you watch it for what it is and not think too much, it's extremely entertaining.

Besides, I'm somewhat dumbfounded by the backlash for Simon. I actually consider him to be one of the characters with the most development of all the animes I've watched. That's not to say characters in other series don't change, but the contrast in his character between episode 1 and 26 is highly notable. Even in the best animes out there, most main characters remain relatively static throughout a whole series.

It's been there for a while. Just ignore it.

4chan (not all of it, contrary to popular belief, it's not a hivemind) hates anything that's popular, especially with normalfags. Recent example: Shingeki no Kyojin. It's getting a lot of hate now. Gotta remain elitist. They can't very well enjoy the same things as the plebeians.

4chan will shit on anything good if it's even remotely popular.

From my experience, they are one of the worst taste in anything, and posters are some of the worst on the internet. It's like gathering the worst posters in Youtube comments and reddit, take out any semblance of redeeming quality, and stuff them in an anonymous forum.

Simon a little pansy? I see, you never got past the first ten episodes of the show.

You're entitled to your opinion, but from my over thirty years of watching anime, TTGL ranks among one of the best anime series I've seen of all time.
I'd consider it just below the first Top o Nerae! but only by a hair.

Nope. Watched the whole thing unfortunately. Sure he mans up after 12-13 episodes but that doesn't change him of being an annoying and awful character in general.

Lol, then it's clear that you have a very different definition of a good character from some of us.

Like you, I was annoyed with Simon, but there was always Kamina to balance things out in the first 8 episodes. Simon was emo for the next 3-4 episodes, but it's part of the character development and looking back at it, I can understand it. Post depression Simon was pretty cool and it wouldn't have been nearly as satisfying without the early Simon.

Just curious, who do you define as a "good" character? I'm genuinely curious as to who you like.

This has nothing to do with him being a "little pansy" then. outside of that, no elaboration.

For those in Europe, Crunchyroll has expanded regional availability. The UK, French and German speaking countries still are left out though.

Daisuki is doing the simulcast for Germany together with a publisher, so we're covered over here.
