Oh, very well...

(None of my English teachers were anime fans, dammit. Maybe then I wouldn't have needed to take make-up courses twice.)

p.s. Just to be clear, the sub was correct. I made the mistake on my own.

Oh, I was just teasing the translation of Wind. Never sit down to guess it was actually a mistake of yours, sorry.

With ffdshow's subtitler you tick the "process full image" box and the letterbox option, however my experience has been that it doesn't always work for some reason. The media player Viplay meanwhile lets you drag softsubs around the screen with the mouse in real time including outside the picture area in full screen mode.

For hardsubs, virtualdub will let you add a border to the image during resize, eg. try a dummy resize like this:

1. resize: 704x396->704x396 (nearest neighbour) with letterbox: 704x484
2. null transform: cropping: crop 44 pixels off top

The first filter adds a 44 pixel black border both top and bottom, the second one removes the top border leaving just the bottom one. (It may be possible to add a border non-symmetrically to avoid the second step but I can't think of a way offhand.)
Interesting, I may have to play with that as well. I'd really like to see subtitles moved off the video area ... for a show like Lucky*Star where a fair amount of action occurs in that bottom inch --- it would be quite an enhancement to be able to subtitle without worrying about interfering with the view. I was wondering how such a layout might affect the quality of the video though.

The concentration of action right at the bottom of the screen was a particular issue in ep.1 but has improved a bit since I think. You could put the subs at the top of the screen, I tried that with the softsubs, it's not bad but feels a little unnatural. Another approach is to position them scene by scene so as not to cover the action, e.g. just above their heads or to one side, I did that once when making my own Yawara fansubs because in close ups the speaker's mouth was often right where the subs would normally go, so I lifted them a bit so as not to obscure the mouth.

I just think the idea of having a strip beneath the video to place subtitles would "remove the problem" so to speak (except for 16:9 ratio films, of course). I'd like to try it sometime and see how it actually looks.

Ep 4, On Kagamin's weight gain.

Kona :- ......Just why does girl fret over stuffs like that ?
Kaga :- Aan't you a girl yourself ?

Konata must have some good genes herself, or she is such an Otaku that she thrives even on eating.

(Episode 4) Kagami never fails to crack me up

Kagami: What's up?
Konata (worried): The people at work are trying to come up with a new menu for summer.
Kagami (concerned): So you do stuff like that, too.. And wait, did you give up on studying for the test?
Konata (entushiastic): Spicy stuff's good when it's hot outside... so how about super spicy ramen!?
Kagami (sighing): Go with something you would usually find in a café.
Konata (entushiastic): Then a super spicy parfait!
Kagami (giving up): Could you stop skipping the thinking process when you respond?

Ep. 6 Lucky Channel after Akira man handles Shiraishi.

Akira: It appears that newbie Shiraishi-kun isn't used to the job and a nervous wreck. You are all making his heart race so I hope he gets used to this job soon. And he better watch how he talks to the veterans around here or else something may happen. *raises her middle finger* I just hate that!
