Germanic, Italic and the Slavic languages all have a common ancestor and they're all part of the Indo-European language group. There are European languages which aren't part of that group though (Hungarian, Basque, Maltese, Finish and Estonian)

Pretty much, I think dubbing also contribute to this (which leads to less exposure to a foreign language) you can also see this in the English-speaking world.

Aye. It's fortunate that a few can speak another language.

Which reminds me. Romi Park can speak Korean since she's Zainichi and has studied in Seoul before being a seiyu.

Word is that Hiroya Ishimaru, Lei Wulong's seiyu can speak fluent English. As shown in his ending for Tekken 5.

Somebody forgot to mention Mari Iijima, the only seiyuu to have voiced the same character -- Lynn Minmay -- in both Japanese and later, English.

Wouldn't surprise me, after reading her bio. She's now living in the States and had been there for a pretty long time.

Oh yeah. Have watched Mari in ADV's dubbing of the original Macross. Didn't hear much of her music, but I like it so far.

Indeed.

Now if I can only find a clip of Romi speaking Korean, that would be cool.

And yeah, Mari-san's got a couple of kids now IIRC.

Hm, I thought there would be a ton of them, at least more Japanese/Korean speaking ones than Japanese/English speaking ones. There aren't too many zainichi VAs, or VAs who just plain want to learn Korean? (Not that only those groups can speak Korean in Japan, js)

I suppose English is considered cooler then Korean.

Now I know there was the whole Korean wave thing, but when you hear J-Pop, what's the language that every song seems to always insert random phrases of? English.

Also, English is mandatory in schools, Korean isn't.

That's awesome. She's sounds like an incredibly nice woman.

I'm already a huge fan of her work, but still, that made me like her even more. If that's possible.

I'm not sure if she said her remarks in English phonetically or what, but it's nice to hear that she's got some effort in.

Yuu Asakawa's Twitter. Majority of her tweets are English, but has some Japanese from time to time. It seems that she lived in New Zealand, where she learned the language. Most likely in her younger years.

PS - The web show she's hosting is called Otaku Verse Zero. She speaks English in the episodes.

Anyone knows if Sakamoto Maaya is at least fluent in English?
Not sure if she's fluent in it, but her pronounciation is very good. I think she barely has an accent when singing in English. The English songs I've heard from her (Gravity, Tell Me What The Rain Knows, and Garden of Everything) all have natural-sounding and gramatically correct lyrics. That last song is a duet, but all of Sakamoto's English parts sound natural.

The only few ones mentioned out there are for example Sayaka Ohara and Mari Iijima.

I heard that Ohara aced the English language tests before, so I need to look for that audio clip where she speaks good English.

Ryo Horikawa here. He learned English from an American girl when his family hosted her for a homestay. In return, Ryo taught the girl Japanese.

His English is good actually.
