It seems as if there were four separate earthquake varying magnitude of 7 to 8.4 within a very short time.
It is probably a once in a thousand years event.

=edit=

Here is the update;
M8.8 2:46 Sanriku
M7.0 3:06 (Aftershock)

M7.4 3:15 Ibaraki

M6.6 4:29 Iwate

M5.8 5:41 Fukushima

M6.4 8:37 Iwate

The distance between Iwate and Ibaraki is 400Km.
Looks as if the Ginza line and Marunouchi line have restarted operation.
Thank God.

Financial side of news :

Nikkei falls 179 points. : Hopefully it falls more so the cost of things in Japan will be lowered, allowing the ease of domestic transaction of necessities.

Currencies against the JPY goes down : Shifts the import advantage to Japan as the money supply flows towards Japan, which allows them to purchase more from the rest of the world with less of their local currency.

Though the kneejerk reaction may make the yen volatile and upon recovery, a sudden mass-short could result in a stagflation in conjunction with rising energy prices. Not good news for the long-term infrastructure plans - to keep the recovery on the line the money flowing into the Japanese economy has to go on for the rest of this year, probably until September or so.

From my Twitter: according to ANN, all major anime-related events have been canceled until further notice, and this includes the Makoto Shinkai event.

Last news report I saw (about half an hour ago) said that no major waves had been observed/experienced anywhere.

"And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken." I understand that this is a complicated and delicate matter to many people here and I won't pretend to know better than anybody going through this right now. At the same time however, I must ask all you here to take a moment and try to understand that many different people will have a different perspective on this incident.

Let us try to keep a cool head as much as possible and lets make and effort not to derail the thread into arguments that solve nothing.

Maybe the topic should be Japan and Ring of Fire Disasters: March 2011?

I've already tried to contact a geologist acquaintance of mine in the states asking his opinion if this could overall cause something like migrating tectonic shifts that can affect our area. SEA and the Western Pacific is a major confluence of tectonic plates, and this could be a very dangerous precedent.

That's a thing I find extremely alarming, there are no news on ships; compared to Indonesia, the Pacific near Japan has a lot more marine traffic, there must have been countless ships near the epicentre.

The other worrying thing is that there is minimal coverage from Sendai, at least on BBC, almost all images and correspondances are from Tokyo.

In between, 8.9 in Richter scale is insane; it must be one of the 10 largest Earthquakes ever recorded

The first wave has just hit the northern Philippines.

To translate, the news reports that the first waves have hit the Batanes islands and the northeastern provinces of the country just a few minutes ago. The report says that this is just the first wave of a few feet high, and that the second wave and third wave will be much higher than this, and will be hitting our shores in in half an hour.

Contacted a friend of mine in Isabela and he's watching the beach as we speak.

What I find the most strangely coincidental is that the quake occurred around rush hour (4:30-ish PM) and during graduation season.

For example, http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking...ry_644037.html

and

http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking...ry_644056.html

Just so very strangely coincidental.
