Chinese fantasy novels recommendation

According to Novelupdates, these are the most popular Chinese web novels (# of users reading series)

http://www.novelupdates.com/series-r...opular&org=495

Which ones would you recommend for a beginner that is starting to get into this genre?

I have read Emperor's Domination, Desolate Era, True Martial World and they are very very good read so far.

Well, I'm reading Tales of Demons and Gods right now and it's entertaining. Started reading the novel because the manga version is good.

I actually don't "read" it but am listening to it at work via Text to Speech. I had to input a few custom correction rules to make the name pronunciations bearable, lol.

if you like true martial world then you should try martial world, since it's somewhat like a prequel
http://www.novelupdates.com/series/martial-world/

also stellar transformation and coiling dragon by the same author of desolate era

I will check out Martial World and Coiling Dragon. I heard that Stellar Transformation isn't that good.

Woah, I feel like the classic start is Coiling Dragon. I recommend reading it earlier rather than later. It isn't exactly that crazy per say in terms of originality, but it's really well written and from my perspective it sets a rather good template for what to expect from the genre when it is written solidly anyway. CD was definitely super fun when Ren was translating it. I also like CD more than DE, but I think that if you like DE, then definitely give CD a try since they're by the same person.

Other than that... ISSTH I Shall Seal The Heavens is definitely among the best xianxia out there; there's nothing quite like it. Beloved by many, it takes a while to hit its full stride, but it should be good from the very beginning... it just gets a heck ton of a lot better later.

ATG/MGA/TDG/TGR/BTTH/WDQK etc. all Wuxiaworld stuff is a safe bet for fun/good xianxia for newbies. I personally started with CD, then read MGA, then read TDG/TGR/ISSTH and many others around the same time.

I haven't read anything else quite like Emperor's domination so I don't know what to recommend you based on that. TMW is also sort of unique at least in terms of how it's being done, but maybe CD is the closest Xianxia I can think of to the TMW style/setting, but that still feels quite different and fresh.

Novel Updates has lots of available CN novels that you can browse as well.

Ze Tian Ji, TTNH, Zhanxian, and The King's Avatar (I guess may not count as same genre... maybe...? Is a really really good CN web novel though.) are also really good Xainxia Chinese WN's.

The Gravity Tales and Wuxiaworld websites in general are good places to look for series that sound interesting or that you think you will like. That's my recommendation to you.

I freaking love Against the Gods; just caught up with the translations yesterday. I want another main character like Che who takes simple pride in his duty to take advantage of girls at every opportunity.

This whole xianxia thing is a gold mine. Just two series' have lasted me a month with never a dull moment. (I listen to them at work with TTS, while driving, lounging at home, etc..).

Against the Gods is very addictive to read.

Have to click the next chapter. And then again and before you know it, you stay up way past your bed time.

But so worth it.

Tried that one and couldn't get into it for some reason... I think maybe it's the cavalier way millions of years are glossed over, lol...

Well. Due to some kind of magic in the Demon Grotto, he was transformed from a boy into a very powerful Dark Crow that lived from millions of years. He trained many Immortal Emperors to the peak of existence.

Now, he is turned back into a regular human boy. He has to start from scratch to build up his power. Thankfully he still have his knowledge.

This is probably the best
A little slow at first 10 or so chapters but WOW it is so so good.
No wonder the author makes millions of USD in royalties from it.

I dropped that one. The fights are a little too abstract. Also the romance/harem angle is part of the entertainment for me in these stories, and all the author does in that one is introduce one girl after another that the protagonist has no interest in.

Millions of dollars in royalties? From a web novel?! I don't believe it.

Even though piracy is rampant in China, even 1 out of 10 readers pay, it adds up to a lot of money. Qidian charges about $0.02 per chapter in China. 70% goes to the author.

http://publishingperspectives.com/20...e-web-authors/

In fact, there are now so many web-writers in China (in the millions) that they are now “ranked,” both by their earnings and number of fans.

On the lowest level is the ordinary writer, also “known as poor guy (or poor guy writer).” They have a limited number of fans, and their work is seldom recommended to others. Their annual income is around 1,000 yuan.

Next up are the Xiaoshen (low rank god) writers with a fan base of more than 100,000 and annual earnings of more than 100,000 yuan ($16,100).

One step further up the ladder are the dashen (super god) class of writers with earnings of more than 1 million yuan ($161,200) with fans counted in the millions as well.

At the very top of the tier are the 20-30 web writers known as platinum authors or zhigaoshen (the Supreme God) class of writers. The 2014 Chinese web-writers list ranks Tangjiasanshao first, with earnings of 50 million yuan (around $8.06 million) per year from royalties, while second and third on the list both raked in more than 25 million yuan ($4.03 million) each.

Wow (o_________o). That's so much better than going through the regular publishing route.

Sorry for the interruption. Carry on as you were.

It is also gaining steam in South Korea. From $10 million in 2013 to $100 million in 2016.

http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20170111000943

The market size of web novels has been doubling year over year. In 2013, when the boom started to take shape, the yearly revenue for web novels was 10 billion won. Three years later in 2016 the figure had shot up to 100 billion won.

By industry estimates there are over 100 authors earning yearly incomes of over 100 million won through web novels. Some ink deals with platforms in advance for their next three books, even before having the first inkling of what they will write.
