Probably not, I mean if you go for AVI then there's not much else that you can choose as the audio format (if we count only lossy compression). Well, you can use AAC in AVI too AFAIK, but it's not recommended and I think it was Nicholi who managed to hack AVI to include a Vorbis stream, but with some massive overhead.
However if you're using MP4 or MKV as your container then imho I really don't see the point in using MP3 when you can have Vorbis, AAC and many other formats...

Hrmm, everyone says mp3 makes the most sense for AVI? So what about those AVIs that are DivX/AC3? It does work apparently.
Unless the point is DivX isn't sensible nowadays for such high-quality encodes, guess the file I'm looking at does stem from 2003. Not sure when H264 became a real option, personally I still dislike using it, it's far from idiotproof with the portability issues a user is bound to run in it to. (Threatening to get off-topic here though.) |

Yes, AC3 in AVI works. But using AC3 (or rather, KEEPING the AC3) is only meaningful if your source used it too, or it's a nonsensical way to waste bitrate with an inefficient codec.
... unless you ask those funky Sprocket-Hole people who randomly transcode shitty 256kbps CBR MP3 and other random funny things from TV raws to AC3, apparently for hardware compatibility reasons (sic).

Hi

I'm having problem
I need to transcode a 448kbps 4ch ac3 to something more efficient. But I can't make anything to work with it. NicAudio only reports 2 channel. NeroDigital (the one in nero burning rom package, not commandline), when I feed it with wav file, smartly transcode it to 5.1 DirectShowSourcing it and feeding it to megui returns error with oggenc and nerodigital. And lastly I tried using ogg vorbis q5 (with wav file as source) and it seems to work, with foobar correctly reports it as having 4 channel (and the filesize is 135MB vs 200MB ac3) but I'm not so sure in using it. Any suggestion? Or should I just mux the ac3 file? *the 4ch wav file made with foobar2000 Last edited by edogawaconan; 2007-08-04 at 05:10. |

Guys. Please. Ogg != Vorbis. Ogg is a container. Vorbis is a codec. The terms are not equivalent, exchangeable, or implied by one another. You can have Ogg without Vorbis. You can have Vorbis without Ogg. And there is no such thing as "OGG".
Whenever someone says that a mkv has "Ogg" audio, that he encoded something with Ogg, or anything of the sort, god kills a nekokoneko. |

Don't worry, I properly tagged my vorbis track in mkv with 'ogg vorbis' |
