Stunning. Just stunning. This episode takes the show to an even higher level. I'm also quite glad that it doesn't pull its punches when it comes to realistic violence, otherwise the impact of this episode wouldn't quite have been the same.

Wow this looks like it is going to be an intense episode. I wish I saved my surprise for when it came out.

After checking out the screen shots I think it is most likely the turning point episode.

Pretty much the only people on the train are the gang and Tiger attacks with his gang. Tiger wants Nijuu-mensou to team up with him but gets shot with his own gun. Tiger then commits suicide with a bomb and Nijuu-mensou saves Chiko but is caught in the flames (perfectly survivable though, if you ask me) and seems to say something to Chiko (can she read lips?).

Angie may survive and become the main enemy for Chiko.
And where the hell was Ken?! It is hard to avoid each other inside the train. He may be on the roof, but what for?

Why haven't more people seen and commented on this excellent episode of anime? This show just goes from strength to strength. The story is amazing. The voice-acting is superb. The animation is outstanding. This is the show I most look forward to every week -- and not just for Hirano Aya's performance.

Spoiler for ep6 (don't read until you've seen the episode):

I'd read up to here in the manga, so I knew this was going to happen, but they did it beautifully. Chiko's shock turning to determination. The barely believable but oh-so-entertaining battle between her and Angie in the compartment and on the roof. The animation of Angie bouncing away down the roof was so strong, as was the way they did the train moving through blowing snow. And Chiko's light, swift movements are perfect: tumbling in the compartment, or running off to get NJM early on.

The show is restrained and elegant: in the fighting scenes they use either no music or gentle music, not grossly overemphasizing the carnage but playing against it. The mere facts are enough. And Hirano Aya's way of not simply simulating grief, but inhabiting it, with tones that break beyond control, works for me.

Do the people who disliked making Chiko too moral still think the same way? A story that involved Chiko actually harming a nice girl would be interesting, but so is a story where the "nice girl" is really the "Daughter of Tora." Even the suspiciously goody-goody final attempt to grab Angie's hand has depth: Chiko is not really a thief, she is a humane person, as well as someone who desperately wants a friend. This will lead her away from a life of crime, it appears. But she was willing to betray a "friend" fo the sake of her "family."

About the only things I can see to complain about here are the way the show has of damping down excess emotion, rather than emphasizing it -- and I am redefining that as a strength, lol. And also the "barely believable" way some things happen, such as Angie's magical way of keeping her axe totally hidden until needed, or Chiko's plunge through the window (beautiful, though, wasn't it?). Or the way Chiko can do somersaults on the train roof, but Angie gets blown away.

1. Her aunt is her legal guardian, so once the British police are involved (the train seems to be in Britain) she has to go back to her aunt in Japan. The only option would be life on the street. But wait for next week to see how she manages the situation.... In any case, getting more of Hirano Aya and Touma Yumi (the aunt's seiyuu) together will be good.
2. Interesting thought.
3. Ken is further forward on the train, if he is still on it. You can see that when he and Muta and the skipper are running through the corridor forward through the train. The anime is a little different from the manga here, so I'm not sure where he is right now.
4. I hope so, too....

This show seems never to explain everything ahead of time. You always get surprises that are only explained later.

Since I have no recollection of seeing a maid in Chiko's original home, or having any reason to think if I did see such a maid she has any relationship to the plot, I'm guessing some people are talking about the as-yet unsubbed episode 6. If you missed the recent forum-wide announcement on spoilers, I suggest reading it now.

The maid makes a quick appearance in Ep 3, and bears an uncanny resemblance to one of the "Detective Girls" in the regular ED sequence. The maid is not a spoiler.
