Tsugumomo

Plot Summary
Quote:
Kazuya Kagami never goes anywhere without the precious "Sakura Obi" his mother gave him. One day a beautiful, kimono-clad girl named Kiriha appeared before him. Kiriha naturally began to live with Kazuya in his room. Then there's Chisato, Kazuya's childhood friend with glasses and a ponytail, who meddles in his affairs. Soon there's also an overprotective older sister who seems to want to take baths with him. Jumble in a huge-chested priestess, a good-looking sorceress named Kokuyoura, beautiful women, and hot girls, and Kazuya's happy, embarrassing, confusing life begins…
Tsugumomo is getting an anime adaptation.

Episodes 1 and 2

And here it is, finally.

Well... the first 2 episodes were kind of good in terms of adapting the source, doesn't feel rushed at all and the VA's work is nice. But there is something off about this, we don't have huge censorship, instead of that the subtle objects hiding something so that's a nice touch, what seems a little bit weird is the designs, obviously they won't be like the manga ones but Tsugumomo is a story that is mainly based on 2 things, ecchi and the juicy designs from the author.

Spoiler for Comparison with Manga designs:

Kiriha the best as always, Kazuya... is kazuya, needs some room to improve. Overall these 2 episodes were good, it could be better but I think we need more episodes to judge this adaptation in a better way.

Harem anime should remain in the 'good old days'. The main girl looks a bit more fiesty than 'kimono-wearing-girl' implies, but that's not enough to convince that these girls are actually characters, rather than simply character types.

I saw the first two episodes and well....it was pretty much exactly what I had expected.

Animation wasn't impressive although censorship isn't that bad. (BD/DVDs will probably be less tame). They'll probably introduce the other main female characters soon so time will tell. It's a supernatural harem story so yeah, I'm not expecting too much from this.

How is it as an adaption of the story compared to the manga? I'm thinking of starting this but can't decide whether to go for the anime or the manga first.

if they can even come close to the manga this will be good, the reason people have low expectation of the anime is exactly because they think the manga will be hard to adapted into anime, both in terms of fan services and action sequences.

normally I would say if you don't want to spoil yourself then watch the anime first, but for this series (19 books) one TV season (probably through book 6) is just barely enough to introduce all the main characters, so go ahead and read the manga first if you have access, just remember the main story line starts around book 10 if you don't want to know the major spoilers,

Or they could watch and read both at the same time until they decide to follow one over the other. Personally, I am with the others that have no hope on the anime ever reaching the mangas quality, too many things will be probably be censored or outright removed/omitted, especially the fanservice which interestingly is important to the overall plot and characters. If they don't censor anything then I will be very surprised.

People have said that the subs currently out for episode 1 are less than desirable. To any Japanese speakers here: are they really that bad?

No official channels picked this one up, so you'll have to do with fansubs.

I looked at one which I saw on Youtube. Just by looking at the subs it is extremely obvious that the subs are bad. Bad spelling everywhere, sub font/position changing all the time, mistimed subs, lines which are not translated, etc. Then again, some fansubs are notorious for these kinds of things. I heard there are better fansubs out now but I'm not going out of my way to look for them.

By the way, this anime feels like it came from the early 00s. So the fansubs fit in quite well.

CR is picking this one up, and airing the first two eps tomorrow, it seems.

That's good in terms of translations... mostly... but you can guarantee that means heavy censorship.

Episode 2 is just a recap of the previous week, the thing is ep1 and 2 aired together as a bonus.

Episode 3 won't air until the next week.
