Story Synopsis

Huntis Harmillion is a young man aspiring to become a knight for the empire to combat monsters and even demons, and he in particular is more than qualified. Upon enrolling into the knight academy, he managed to score better results than the previous record holder in the history of the academy—and so did four other people, two of them with even better results than him. The top scorer of these five, Reece Regalgent, pulls these elites together to form Squad 00, also known as the Irregulars.
A year later, Huntis has been held back a year, his old squad is gone, and he's been made the leader of a squad of troublemakers known as The Worsts, with Huntis himself no longer having the desire or motivation to accomplish anything.

This novel won the GA Bunko Excellency Award or whatever you call it. I've read it myself and liked it, but it could be a premature judgement for the series as a whole, since it's not like novels can't go downhill as they progress.
The first volume is a split between Huntis interacting with his new squad with interludes about his time with Squad 00 between chapters. Time does pass at a decent pace throughout the first volume, so hopefully it doesn't slow down with future volumes to make a stale setting. Has been pretty good at mixing it up so far. Demons are also pretty overpowered.
Also I like the art a lot.

Yes, Reece dies during Squad 00's first and last encounter with a Demon/Majin. After that, Huntis becomes traumatized and loses all his motivation, so he gets held back a year.

Spoiler for More specifically about Huntis' trauma:

Huntis completely blames himself for Reece's death. When they were coming up on a village on fire, Reece had a bad premonition and suggested leaving, but Huntis insisted they check it out since they were knights (in training). Huntis let his guard down around the demon attacking the town when he thought a powerful attack from Reece had finished it, but Reece gets caught covering for him and the demon uses Reece as a hostage to buy time to heal. Reece then has Huntis cut through both him and the demon, and since then Huntis has been unable to summon his Spell Arms (the sword on the cover) and can't get the feeling of cutting through Reece off of his hands.

This also goes to show just how overpowered demons are. They have crazy strength and defense, can use basically most (if not all) tiers of magic up to the third and sometimes even fourth tier without chanting a spell (Huntis, for example, is only capable of using a Fire Tier 3 in combat with a chant, and he's considered a genius, and Reece a Light tier 4 with a 15 second cast time), which includes healing magic to heal any slight damage you might give them to begin with.

Saya outright drops out of the academy. Due to Huntis and Saya being like this, the squad falls apart.
Arlena advances a year in the school, and becomes the head of the students as the Knight Captain. It's basically the equivalent of being a Student Council President, but actually makes more sense and has more influence.
Mustlia is the same as Arlena, but becomes the Vice Captain instead.

Arlena and Mustlia play small roles outside of the flashbacks.

Yes, Saya is the totally-not-the-fantasy-equivalent-of-a-discriminated-Japanese-person black-haired girl on the cover. At the end of the volume, Saya reenters the the school and accepts Huntis' offer to join his new squad.
Those fairies are Familial Elementals. At the time Squad 00 was formed, Reece was considered a genius among geniuses for being the only one with one, a light elemental named Ouroboros, a snake biting its own tail. Having one is extremely rare.

Saya herself gets one during her travels called Leviathan (apparently male), and Huntis had gained one during his fight with the demon a year before without realizing it due to his trauma. Huntis' is called Phoenix. Apparently these elementals choose people based on their expertise with their elemental magic as well as certain emotions. Leviathan is a water elemental who liked Saya's purity and determination, Phoenix a fire one liking Huntis' valor and anger, and no idea what Reece's responded to. They make their partner stronger, allowing Huntis, for example, to produce hotter flames, create a larger Spell Arms, cast Tier 3 Fire magic without a chant, and be able to cast Tier 4 with a chant.
Near the end of Huntis' fight with his second demon, it turns out that Reece had requested Ouroboros go with Huntis as his dying wish, making it where Huntis gained Reece's Spell Arms (a gunblade that shoots light) and his Light Elemental. Huntis himself had poor Light affinity before it. Saya was shocked at seeing Huntis able to wield two entirely different Spell Arms, let alone being contracted to two Familial Elementals. It's unknown how effective Huntis will be at controlling two in a normal situation, since during his time controlling them he was greatly buffed by a Tier 4 Life spell (life = healing spells).

Cysline kissing Huntis at the end is because she's Maron-sexual. It's also part of why I'm hesitant to call this a harem, even though it technically kind of is? This is gonna be kind of long, so bear with me.
Basically, what happened is Maron desperately tried to convince Huntis to stop being afraid to confront Saya (Huntis had a major crush on Saya during the Squad 00 days, but thought Saya and Reece were secretly going out, so he was afraid to see her because he killed Reece and he was sure she hated him.), which during Huntis tells Maron that he still likes Saya even now.
So Maron confesses to Huntis and tells him that he should stop running away and eventually regret never be able to tell Saya his feelings forward her. Huntis is, of course, shocked that Maron likes a good-for-nothing like him but Maron was aware she had no chance with Huntis to begin with. So Huntis gets over himself to help Saya fight their second demon, and confesses to her several times throughout it, and after it. Saya herself was hinted to have some sort of feelings toward Huntis, by the way, but she never clearly accepts or rejects his confession in the novel.

So Maron's all sad and crying now, and Cysline, being a hardcore lesbian for Maron (just Maron, hence Maron-sexual. She's extremely hostile to guys in general and even punched Mina for touching her Maron.) and wanted to comfort her. So she had an idea and tells Maron that she'd do anything for her. She doesn't particularly like Huntis (in fact, she has a grudge over Huntis beating her in a fight and being the primary target of Maron's affection) but she really wanted Maron to be happy, except Maron's already given up. So she decides that since the Empire law forbids same-sex marriage, if she and Maron marry the same man, Maron and herself will be indirectly married. The kiss was just proving her determination, according to her. Of course, this is clearly partially a ploy to have Maron not give up on her love for Huntis by acting on Maron's behalf. Don't see any reason Maron and Cysline have to get married to be together, after all. She also directly tells Saya to not make any passes at Huntis because of this, again likely to raise Maron's chances at winning. Also, Maron herself is clearly not in love with Cysline despite how much Cysline insists Maron is.

As for if Cysline has any positive feelings toward Huntis, who can say? Most of the novel is just Cysline hating Huntis aside from showing up with the rest of Squad 29 to help out with the the second demon (instead of immediately going to Maron like usual, but demons are kind of a big threat) and the kiss scene. The kiss itself was tongue and everything, and she clearly wasn't grossed out after it or anything, although she wasn't particularly any different than normal after it either. Who knows, maybe her only love interest in Maron but she swings either way sexually.
Either way, Cysline's own romantic involvement in a harem sense will have to wait for future volumes to be enlightened on, since she clearly prefers Maron at the moment and her and Huntis haven't really any scenes together that would hint she actually likes him or something. So you can probably understand why I called this technically a harem, despite one of the so-called harem members not being there spiritually.

How did explaining a kiss scene turn out so goddamn long? Short answer is yes, she's actually kissing him, tongue and everything. Lasts until Huntis pulls himself together and pulls her off of him, too.

This looks interesting, but I still prefer Sekai no Owari no Encore since the elementals are cuter haha. Also, what's the objective of the knights and demons here? Is there like a broader plot in the background? How is the world building in the first volume?

Volume 2 has Huntis and Cysline in a field of crystals on the cover. Huntis' sword is like a two hander and Cysline uses a rapier-like sword.
