I think you're missing the point. If the antagonists oppose the protagonist because they're controlled, they're just plot devices. An antagonist is a compelling character when they do what they do of their own free will and choice. It's an internal conflict that is lacking in villainous characters who do what they do just because they're evil psychos, or in characters who are brainwashed or controlled who just follow orders, whether they like it or not.

I think that was the point Queen of Corners was trying to make. SAO lacks complex characters in general but especially antagonists. Most are just villains or puppets, and such characters are pointless.

Then again, the audience Kawahara is targeting probably doesn't mind. I think most are in it just for the cool factor and hot bitches.

Well, M.A.D. had a point that they were still technically antagonists (for the first parts of Alicization, anyway), but you got it right on spot what I was trying to say.

But yeah, the target audience probably doesn't care about it so Kawahara doesn't have any reason to care, either.

They were manipulated and used, but not mindless tools. It's been shown that they can doubt if given a reason to harbour them. The reason why Admina had to <<reset>> them from time to time is because they still had some will of their own.

They did what they were told not because of fear, but because they believed it was the right thing. That belief can be reasoned with and shaken or even broken because they're still people with their own motivations.

I didn't at all think they were too simple. Maybe they lacked screen-time for development, but I don't think it would have been a good move to derail the main story a couple of volumes at the point they were introduced. I hope some time is given to that now because they're interesting.

Nope, they aren't simple. But they're also not the big bads. But I digress.

I've been scrolling through SAO wikia, found SAO vol 15 announcement and found Absolute Solitude is published. This, technically, means that Kawahara is going to be working on four series at once, if you count progressive separate from SAO.

So... is it too much to hope that SAO vol 16 will be out before June 2015?
