It'll be interesting to see what sort of information is in the article (and I swear that post wasn't there when I was writing my previous post!). Hopefully it's not just random "data" from a nameless/unimportant employee, and has some real national statistics backing it up.

The second book is due out October 31st, according to rightstuf. Later volumes not yet solicited.

Well, like I said, "according to rightstuf." Their's is obviously a placeholder, since books generally come out on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, not Saturdays.

Barnes & Noble lists Oct 1 for the Hardcover and Oct 7th for the paperback.
The books are on a every 6 month release schedule for some reason.

I could see the novels selling well.

They're wrote in a style that I think will appeal a lot to young teens - particularly to sci-fi-loving teens. When I first read a couple of them myself, it struck me how much they would have appealed to me back when I was watching Star Trek: TNG as a kid in the early 90s.

Now, I don't think that Haruhi is going to be the next Harry Potter (North American-wise) or anything that huge, but I think that you could see the novel (and hopefully anime by extension) fandom grow considerably from sales success in North America.

Just noticed that blogger is talking about Barnes and Noble, not Borders. That makes things easier, since B&N has a sales rank on their website. Quote from the site on how rankings work:

I only added Slayers because the bulk of that blog talks about Haruhi making light novels in America popular, but just look at that volume of Slayers. The rank is pretty damned good considering it's almost 4 years old and the rankings seem to only cover 6 months.

11,608 is quite good actually, especially considering it's only around 4,000 behind the newest Fullmetal Alchemist manga.

What am I saying, ITS FANTASTIC! haha

However, its eye opening. Think about it. The hardcover is selling much better than the soft cover. Which means that at the moment, the fans of Haruhi really ARE making it a success right now. However, the soft cover sales are not bad at all!

Again though, the sales ranking is based on the past 6 months of sales only. Not sure how recent those other light novels are, but like I said with Slayers vol 6 it's really damned old.

I think Haruhi would be better served with a faster release schedule in the States. I know that I, personally, am not buying any of it until Disappearance comes out. Now, whether that happens in novel, manga, or anime form first will determine how I decide to collect the series.

Six months apart is really too slow for a market that you're trying to grab and keep.

I can remember waiting for the Harry Potter books to come out and I've been waiting for the next installment in the Wheel of Time series (not as avidly, though, but I check up on it's status from time to time) which finally comes out this October after four years since the last book (although in WoT's case the author having an illness and passing away accounted for most of that wait).

I do the same thing every time I go to my local Barnes, checking Haruhi in the teen section on my way to the humor books. It's become a routine, glad I'm not alone on this.

Hmm... reading this made me remember that publisher's weekly article called the main streaming of Haruhi Suzumiya. The article says that the first print run for the first volume of the manga would be 75 000. The hard cover would have 10 000 and the paperback would have 50 000. So if this is from one specific store chain over the last six months, could it mean that they met their original expectation? I do hope so.

Rightstuf has the first novel for 9 bucks or something, or at least they did awhile ago. I think I saw release dates for books 3 and 4 for next year but can't find where. Probably going to be about the same as the two this year.
