Pretty funny. The "fights" between the magician and the combat waitress chick were hilarious! Those beams were hella corny.

OMG... I decided to check this out on a friends rec, and Hell.. I have never ever laughed so much in a single episode. Very very good way to start On second thoughts, I'll say this is the japanese home version of Scary Movie.

Red face Things aren't what they seem.

Well a bit after everyone i give it a 7... lol
I guess how great it is, it's really too "daring" for a first episode. Like someone said, i took me quite a while to understand this was a joke...
I don't know, maybe i'm stupid... lol

I loved the voices, though, you know, completely "lifeless". This is pure genius.

Spoiler:

But still, i guess this is a bit too much to ask from an audience. I mean, people like me, who don't know a thing about the novel or the manga.

I have to confess I downloaded it once, threw it away after the OP (is that an OP, by the way? lol) much too quickly, thinking " what the f... was that?", then completely forgot about it
A couple of weeks later i read about it on the suggestion forum, where some people wrote that's the most exciting series this year, once you've gotten past that first ep...

Plus lots of people here are using Haruhi as an avatar and/or a sig, so i really felt like i had to watch it more carefully.

Now i'm watching ep.2 i'd say they are probably right. ^^ I don't remember their nickames but i'll check again and give them good reputation points. That's the less i can do.

Thanks!
I hope i won't fail everyone in here! lol
At least I have to watch all the ep. released so far to grant myself the right to post without making a fool of myself.

Just joking.

Can someone tell me, why Mikuru has a red and a blue eye in the scene, where she uses her mighty Mikuru Beam? She normally has brown eyes. Is it because of her attack, is it a special effect by Haruhi, or something else? I don't know why, but I'm thinking about this for some time now.

I guess that's a special effect, as you said, but I'm not sure. Actually I wondered about that too, then stopped wondering, because there were so many other things to wonder about. It may be good to come back on it now. Thanks. Don't you wanna take part in the HLFU? heehee. Watch the first character poll thread for more info. ^^

While, this making of a movie episode was definitely amusing, it wasn't overly funny.
As for this being a movie I thought that was pretty obvious, after kyon's commentary.
I mean it was funny, in a pathetic yet realistic look at highschool home movies.
However, there was a lull in the action sometimes, which put some of us to sleep.
Part of the reason, I believe this episode is not as popular as the others is,
Suzumiya Haruhi doesn't show up much in this episode at all.

What the?!

Completely nonsensical. I know it's supposed to be one of those parody episodes - but it's been done before, and done better. Not on the same level as, say, Gekiganger 3.

Was Gekiganger 3 shot in an "amateur video" way too?

Please watch it again and pay closer attention to the animation quality.... its actually quite technically difficult to pull this sort of thing off. The episode is also full of foreshadowing clues since chronologically it occurs toward the end of the story.

I actually recommend that people not used to stream-of-thought literature watch episode 1 last rather than first. Start with episode 2 and keep in mind that this only *LOOKS* like a typical high school romance-y thing. It gets seriously Twilight Zone rather quickly (the episodes are presented in a 'gestahlt' overview of the timeline rather than in chronological order).

Gekiganger 3 was produced to look like late 70s, 80s super robo anime.

But Episode 00 is produced to simulate true amateur video quality, it is even harder to do compared to normal animation of today standards.

I'm really disappointed with the average human.

Anyone has any info on the Japanese audience on their reactions to Episode 00?

I am guessing it is like "WTF are we watching?" for the majority.

I know I reacted like it. My exact thought was "What the heck did I d/led?". Then I watched until the last second because there were a time I was watching those badly done home videos for the breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The "What the heck did I d/led?" effect certainly happened to everyone who has never read the novels in the first place.

My belief is that the Japanese have an extreme positive effect after watching this show, that leads to the explosive hype and popularity burst.

This extreme positive effect can also happen to people outside Japan, like me and a whole bunch of Haruhists here, who laughed non-stop throughout the episode.

wow ... well the real tip off on whether we'll see more seasons will be:
1) Novel sales (they can't print them fast enough)
2) Merchandise (and they seem to have dropped the ball here a bit... still no figurines though we're starting to see fluff and druff (keychains, watches, other disposable stuff)
3) Follow up CDs... (how many ways will they package the same music )

There's probably some serious stewing in the KyoAni studio now....
"o fsck.. we've already committed to Kanon 2006. Crap..... they're going to massacre us no matter what we do."

Hopefully the otakus take moment to realize that lynching the nice people at KyoAni will only further delay a second Haruhi series
I don't think KyoAni expected this show to be this well recieved.
