Whoa. Now that was pretty intense.... Shaula Gorgon is a formidable opponent. This, just as the episode name "Descent into the Nightmare" indicates, got dark really fast, but it precisely the background of the previous eps that gives it such a stromg extra punch. Well done.
Oh yes. Poor Meme, but at the same time... wow. She is TOUGH! First ep I am voting 8 out of 10 in this series, by the way....

The manga is already finished, but it won't release it til after the anime finished. The writer really wants us to watch the anime before finishing the manga.
I knew Meme's weird memory lapses was suspicious. I didn't expect the Anya part of the episode. To think Akane and Clay were guarding Anya. |

Damn things getting pretty crazy.
Well I guess this covers how Sid ended up getting killed. Though it is pretty odd that despite laying a trap for a witch he decided to not bother take his partner with him. I guess they needed Sid to be sloppy enough to get himself killed. But geeze things got bad in a hurry. You knew there was something up with Anya, but didn't quite expect the truth to be what it was. I do feel for her though. I doubt her coming all the way out here to Shibusen was just to goof around. Considering Clay's team was unable to do anything competently out there I hardly think he's in a position to be yelling at anyone. Sid didn't die because they were protecting Anya but because they couldn't handle a few mind controlled individuals. I thought Meme's memory problem had something to do with what was going on, but I didn't think it was this involved. Wonder what exactly was done to her before she got there. Clearly her blood was messed with in some way. Used as a personal spy that whole time. And the hits keep coming for Tsugumi. First they kill her dog (ow), then have her snap at Meme who gets arrested soon after, she gets kidnapped in a sense, Sid gets killed, and Anya is being taken away. Her partner situation goes into extremes. Either it's too many or too few. Kind of wonder where this will go really. Presumably they can save Meme somehow. But Anya's situation is complicated. Will have to renounce her royal position or something if she is going to stick around.

Ah poor Meme. I can really appreciate how they had previously emphasized how painfully it can be for meme to forget things before this episode happened... it makes her forgetting about pochi and hurting tsugumi so much more understandable. And was not expecting Meme's memory problems to be tied to the main plot like this. I feel like its a well done twist; nothing gave it away, but when you think back it feels like it does make sense and does fit.

but ya, i can't help but think that they were woefully unprepared. I mean, they were trying to lure out a powerful witch and yet Sid was effectively fighting unarmed... for a mission like this you would think he would bring his partner, nygus with him Though i do appreciate the show making an effort to maintain continuity. How did they say Sid died in the original series? They said he took a statue of liberty to the fore head. And that looks to be exactly how he died here (though you don't ever get a good look at it, you can see enough of it to tell it was a statue of liberty)... though you can kind of tell its a retcon, since in the in the original series, they make it sound like a comical accident and much less serious

But I guess they needed to stretch things a bit so they could explain Sid's death here. Somewhat ironic that those girls will have given Stein the idea . I don't think they ever really delved into detail regarding Sid's death in the original series. They made up some story, but it was admittedly false. Will give the series props since they do cover something I wondered about from time to time. The first one yeah. The second one...thank god .

Not to mention that Shinigami-sama shouldn't really need to help them... afterall killing witches is one of the primary functions of the DWMA. This is something they SHOULD be able to handle. Though that does still feel like somewhat flimsy reasoning Though come to think of it, this could also be the reason why the anime did not bother to adapt certain manga chapters. In one chapter the girls meet some of the other death scythes; obviously if they were around they would be first in line to help protect death city. And in another chapter the girls get to meet Nygus, Sid's partner; she has yet to make an appearance in the anime and she did not come with sid on this mission. Could be the anime has actually been trying to explain how a strong miester like Sid could get taken out so easily by Shaula; if he was armed he would have put up a better fight. Though even then i still find it silly that he was not armed Quote:
Spoiler:
the statue in the center of that plaza was a statue of liberty and shaula/Meme just shoved it through his skull. It just turns out that his death was a very serious matter, where as in the original series it sounded more like a joke (which is why it feels like a retcon that attempts to maintain continuity)

Bones sure know how to pack some punch. Great episode.
Oh, since they didn't bring up the concept of Death Scythes, I feel that Shaula's not going to die. Not from a Shibusen's student's hand, anyway. So... unresolved issues... 1) Blade. 2) Tsugumi proving herself to Maka. (Kinda picking up on old tropes, but oh well.) 3) The partnership. (I do feel that it's going to be quite a dilemma. Maybe Meme going Vagabond with Tsugumi staying with Anya?) Anything else I failed to mention except for doing a goddamn remake which they're not going to do? |

Doing a quick check I do think we saw Nygus briefly in the fourth episode teaching a class so at least she was around at that point. Not sure if she got a full blown introduction or not though. It's a solid reason why Shinigami himself wasn't involved with this situation. Though I still feel that the resident Death Scythe probably should have been called in. There can't be that many situations in the city more pressing than a witch plotting something within their borders.

So someone stabs Sid in the back and he spins around and hits them away full force... only to see that he just hit Meme. While he was distracted by the shock of that, Shaula poisoned him. Having Nygus along probably would not have changed that series of events. It might help in the subsequent fight, but he'd still be fighting a student he knew was brainwashed, which was likely a big hindrance as well. So even if he was armed, it'd likely come down to how well Nygus could protect Sid from brainwashed Meme. It would probably save his life, but probably wouldn't win him the fight either. |
