It seems the most popular subject for MMD videos besides the Vocaloids themselves is Touhou; not that that's a bad thing.

I think this 20 minute long Reimu vs Cirno video is the best animated Touhou fight besides the Reimu vs Utsuho one.

Spoiler for Reimu vs cirno:

I'm always anticipating the next MMD Cup; watching MMD videos has become something of a hobby/addiction of mine.

While this is not a MMD Cup video, it's one a pretty funny short video ; the use of Evangelion's OST is perfect:

Spoiler for creepy bus stop person:

A certain yellow-haired girl has caught my eye among the videos Saintess has posted, apparently she's from Touhou which I know nothing about--though this might be a good time to start. Unfortunately I couldn't find her 'mini-skirt version' anywhere, drats.

That is Alice - and she's a rather popular model to use because she's so cute.

And the high-res uploads are pretty nice with her in it :

Gravity=Reality would probably be the best high-res MMD IMO; the dance is not only cute, its graphic is pretty nice to watch too. Besides, Sakuya's model is pretty popular too, and there is an alternate full-apron (and black stockings) version of here :

Yeah, PPP (Pad-chan's Pretty Popular) too- *knifed*

And I found a full-miniskirt version too (Tenshi, Alice, Reimu, Momoji, Koakuma), though the textures are pretty glaring even at 720p.

Here it is:

Yes, my intel gathering allowed me to procure her name--however her model is either made by ninjas or I'm just not looking in the right places.

The Alice Margatroid model is probably the best model I've seen in MMD. Though IA comes close (but isn't as cute). What's particularly impressive is the physics on her dress, flows really nicely, and never seems to have "pop-through", which is quite noticeable when you compare it to the popular Reimu model that's featured on a lot of older MMDs.

@SaintessHearts: Sweet magic is by far the best Alice MMD

Speaking of the MMD Cup, does anyone know a good consistent source of info? In particular I'd love to see anything regarding voting, finalists etc. What info there is out there doesn't seem to have permeated into the english speaking internet yet, beyond the occasional video links.

Some of the MMDs are used to tell stories, like this one :

There is alot of work that went into optimising the framerates....with so many objects on the map it must have been really difficult to animate.

You mean this one.

She has got plenty of models. Other than Miniskirt and regular dress with Shanghai, you probably saw her stealing Sakuya's dress last page. She also has a Racequeen, nurse, with a fan, schoolgirl and gothic lolita version (with a rather fluid dance). And there is also these, and also this :

Spoiler for NSFW:

For the Racequeen, the original is No Life Queen by Sakuya and Remelia is noted to be less stiff, especially at 2.21 (cross right-over-left, left-over-right, fold arms and tsun), I guess the makers didn't want the models to glitch when playing. The RL dance here.

With MMD, who needs AKB or SNSD?

The second one has pretty nice sound effect to put Lady Gaga to shame (pun unintended). Turn up the speakers.

If I could get a Kinect and the instructions to hack it, I'll probably have an entire dance up in a day - I used to play those dancing games at the arcade.

Speaking of which, someone apparently did this :

And here is the original :

It is Daisuke from Bemani IIDX 10th Mix, by Y&Co. Considering the release is now IIDX 19th, it is close to a whole decade ago; and the original dance is by HHH - a DJ with Bemani who is known to be quite sexy and brilliant dancer.

Hopefully someone does the other dances on MMD.

A particularly fluid dance was posted in both mine and SaintessHearts videos. After some detective work, I actually found out that neither of those are the original source of the motion data, here's the original:

Though I have to say, that motion data was well deserving of being upgraded to better models and backgrounds. Judging by the title of the video, it was achieved through motion capture.

Here's a very cool example:

EDIT:

@SaintessHeart: I believe it's possible to get motion capture data from a regular camera too. I've never seen any demonstration of it though.

There are some really wacky MMD videos out there as well as recreations/parodies of pre-existing music videos.

This video. . . it should be offensive since the song is a rather stereotypical portrayal of Mexican people, but the animation is so absurd and wacky that it ends up being hilarious. It also makes me think that there's something missing when I see Reimu and Rin model sans mustache. Plus, it's fun to see how many characters from various continuities that the video maker manages to cram in.

I think this would have worked better with them playing their instraments...wih only one doing the dance movies without an instrament...likely either Yui or Azusa.
