If people ask me what my hobbies are, I tend to tell them. But it's not really something I tell people as soon as I meet them :P

But it's not really because I'm embarassed, it's just like so many other hobbies :P (I did make my 3younger siblings anime fans though )

I tell people that I watch anime, but that is only if they ask or if they see some anime things in my room. If people ask me what my hobbies are, anime won't really be one of the answer. I won't deny it, of course, but that's just how it is. If I tell people, I'm going to have to answer if 1) I watch "anime porn" or 2) "YOU WATCH POKEMON?!?!?" and even though I'm prepared to answer them, it's such a pain to explain that anime isn't just Pokémon and hentai.

I know exactly how you feel. It's a pain explaining that over and over. Especially because anime and manga is published as something for 11 year old children. So usually even after explaining, people just think it's a bad excuse.

I tell people I love anime...but they don't normally ask...Normally they say something, and I respong (Weather I was in the conversation or not), and it doesn't even have to be about anime, and relate it to some anime and talk about how that happend, what happend before this to make that happen and and stuff...Or if I over hear someone talking about anime, I usually throw myself into the conversation (It's an impulse...anime...myself...it can't be helped XD). Like the other day, some one was talking a few other people and where all like, Dude...I got a new manga...it's awsome, it's called Death Note..." and...this is where my problem comes in..I have a big problem with spoilers...so I said, I've seen and read the entire series, and he's like really, and I said yep..and with out realizing it, I started telling him what happend and what not, and he's like "AWW come one man...!"...so all of my friends know, unless they've seen the anime and knows what happend...not to talk to me about it XD...So usally..I don't have to tell people weather I like it or not...they normally just know...I have a reputation at school for being..."The anime obbsessed freak who gives spoilers.."..Yes...

I tell people I watch anime. I'm not ashamed. I simply say that American and Chinese television doesn't appeal to me. Afterwards, I usually receive two reactions: either they respond with jokes and laughs that I have to end up defending myself by differentiating licensed, plot-heavy kiddy shows with the adult, dramatic, quality programs. The other is... they're surprised they found someone else who watches and can discuss anime with!

Nope and it almost never comes up. Though sometimes I have talked about Naruto, but next to that basically null. I got a mate that reads manga though, but even then we don't really discuss it. o_O We do know from each other that we both read manga, but to be honest there's really no point. The anime population is basically null here anyhow. For anime discussion I have teh intarweb no?

It's not really that I am ashamed. It's just not worth the trouble to explain. Though once I let a few friends watch elfen lied for the shitz and giggles. xD

While I'm not secretive about it, I definitely don't advertise the fact. It helps that I really don't socialize much, and when I do I spend more time listening than talking. It never comes up.

When the subject of media comes up, I generally say at most that I don't have cable and that I download what little I watch. The most I volunteer aside from that is that, since I study Japanese and grew up with Japanese family, I often watch Japanese programming. I have no need to be specific, because I watch live-action dramas, as well.

If, for some reason, it might come out that I'm downloading Japanese cartoons, I have "beard"--well, more of an "excuse": I download anime so my little sister can watch it. I also need to preview it for her, because of concerns about the content. All that is true, and is a good explanation for all my downloading and viewing habits as viewed by an outsider. I don't have to add anything about my own viewing habits.

I'm not ashamed of anything, just aware that most people really don't understand. I'm definitely a proponent of not hiding who you are, but also aware that for some people it wouldn't be prudent. Due to my place in the community, that is the case for me. At least twice a week, many people trust me to care for their children or teenagers. While many are rational folks, some of those people really believed that Pokemon was a tool of the devil. My good reputation has helped many of them overcome any apprehension or prejudices they have simply based on my "nerd" status or my Spock-like social awkwardness, but I'm not willing to see how far that will go.

Even amongst people that have no such prejudices, I walk a fine line. My father knows what I watch, but what about the people he mentions it to casually? Some of the kids I work with watch anime, but they tend to assume I watch the same shows as them, which is explainable but not something they seem to grasp easily. Worse, if they tell their parents, will their parents assume I'm watching the same kids' shows?

I recall a "minor incident" from the last time I was in Peru, when working with a young man (a senior in high school) was channel surfing and noticed my look of recognition when he briefly stopped on the cable anime network and I spotted the Spanish dub of Saikano. Later on in the trip, while some other people were around, before he stepped out he turned the television to the same network (then playing a really awfully dubbed, immature tennis drama) and said "Here you go". I politely asked him what drugs he was taking, and he asked "You like that stuff, don't you?" Arg. I gave him a quick explanation that satisfied the slight puzzlement of some of the others around.

I think that greater openness about the hobby (if you can call it that) will help bring greater understanding to society at large, but the ability to practice such openness isn't a luxury I have at the moment. I'll have to fight the Good Fight on different fronts for the time being, and only really let my inner nerd show on the internet, amongst like friends, and at cons.

I understand your pain. Its very frustrating at times when youd like to discuss that last episode of so and so show with someone you can trust, but you then realize that a.) no one around you would know what youre talking about, and b.) you could possibly be ridiculed for trying to bring up the subject.

Mmmmm, my older friends don't know since it was a pretty recent development. I only tell people if it comes up and I know they have similar interest. You could say I'm sortof a closet nerd since you would never suspect me of liking that sort of stuff if you saw me.

I always ask people, Do you watch anime, and all that stuff before I say so, But i don't hide it.
Well, I really only talk to my friends about anime. When we first see each other in the morning were like 'So, did you get to watch the whole season of Lucky Star this week?' or something along those lines.

A lot of people here have been confronted with the comment that 'you watch pokemon?' or 'you watch that pron?'

I also get some of those questions as well. To which I proudly answer, 'No, I watched Sailor Moon.' Which is the truth anyways, as I thought SM first season was great, and I still think it is a classic. Thankfully the one I saw wasn't the North American version, but rather a more uncut version when I was a kid.

And in hindsight, I think Sailor Moon influenced a lot of what I think is moe today. Minako in particular, since I adore long hair, a hair accessory (a ribbon in this case), and being a cool, collected, kickass character.

Of course, trying to explain all that results in everything going over the other person's head. Which is all fine and dandy with me. XD

What?? Place in the community?? Are you the mayor of your city? Sheriff? Preacher? Sounds like you have some very irrational religous people as friends, to think that Pokemon has something to do with the devil...

If a parent of a kid asked, I'd just explain to them what I watch and why. They can choose to understand or not.

Hey, you gotta do what you think is best, but this is one of oddest posts I've read...
I can absolutely understand how that can sound odd to some one who hasn't had to be in this sort of position. You just about pegged it, actually: I am a minister (though not a pastor), and take care of children and teenagers at my church.

It's not that I have irrational religious people as friends (I choose my friends more carefully than that), but I have to aid, serve, work with, or just plain interact with the general public who may be irrational religious people (or just irrational people, period). If something should come up, I can try to explain... But as the saying goes, "You can't reason some one out of something they didn't reason themselves into." I don't hide anything, but I'm cautious in what I reveal and how I do so.

Many (most?) people can afford to have a "take it or leave it" approach when it comes to how others perceive them. I used to, myself. When my pursuits were much more "lone wolf"ish, I could do anything I cared for without apology, but now I have to be careful. If I'm not, that could seriously affect my pursuits to be of service to those people, or the people around them. It could even effect how others associated with me are able to do so. We can only serve people if they allow us to do so (and in the case of kids, if their parents allow us to do so). Considering the consequences of the alternative, diplomacy is a small price to pay.

I have similar concerns when it comes to business, but they're far less important to me.

I don't believe in catering to irrational people, but sometimes we have to pick our battles. Fortunately, not every one is in the same position as me. (Fortunately, the position and reputation I keep allows me to have some influence when defending those who are standing up for sanity in more defiant ways.)

No because when ever I admits that I watch anime, I get either of these answers:

- ohmigosh, you watch pokemon? That's lame (me: =_=)
- Naruto is the best anime isn't it? Sasuke is like, soo mine. (me: um ya, you can keep him)
- YOU WATCH P0RN!? (me: thank you very much for screaming in my ears and embarrassing me in front of everybody)
- geek (me: *stabbed*)

therefore, I do not say that I watch anime unless I know that the person likes something that I like.

I don't really care either ways. Though I do not wish to discuss some other parts of anime. (anime's not really prevalent where I live)

I'll say I watch anime if i'm asked something about my interests or something, though only if I think there not an idiot that will instantly label me as a sicko or weirdo. However I havn't met any anime watchers since I started college so instead of going around asking everyone I decided to start a club though i'm not sure how many people will join.

I don't care. But I don't go around talking about it. I think anyone that takes their hobby so seriously that they feel everything in life relates to it, is taking it more serious than they should.

Call me crazy - But I think the only thing that should be a life style is your job or your life, not your hobbies.

If people are talking about it, I'll talk about it, just like sports, movies, my job, my hobbies, my athletics and politics. Sometimes there's substance pertaining to it that can be taboo though.

What you have to recognize is that people will always fear what they don't understand. How people perpetrate that fear is when the comfort zone is crossed. I see this happen with all subjects. Anime, video-games, sexual orientation, science, religion. No matter what, you have to understand that there will always be an idiot out there that thinks anyone that doesn't like what he likes, is weird or wrong. The idea is, you don't fear that idiot and you leave yourself open so you meet people that aren't like him. Eventually the idiot will be the minority and the weirdo will be himself.

Then again, what do I know? There's not one thing I'm into that takes precedence over my life.

I'm a mixed martial artist, a writer, a student, an anime watcher, a health food freak, a car enthusiast, a hardcore gamer, a poet. There's still things I haven't tried yet. And I talk about any of them depending on who's asking or why.
