that he killed L I was kinda of sad, and at the same time in denial. Right now even after reading through everyones spoilers and rewatching the episode it's really hard to believe that he's gone. I want to think that it's staged and L has one more big trick up his sleeve but after watching Rem crumble to dust and coming in this thread it seems doubtful.

Hi everyone. First post here.


I'm a big death note fan. I was wondering about something so I decided to register here so I could post. At 4 o'clock in the morning!

I was very disapointed to see L die considering that he always had the odds against him. The one thing I want to know is this. I don't want L's death to be in complete vain. Someone can PM me the answer to this if they know the answer. I can't wait to see the next episodes. A simple yes or no will suffice


Did L do anything or preplan anything before his death that will hinder Light in the future? I don't want Light to get the complete last laugh. Did he set any kind of mind trap or roadblocks for Light? Kind of as a final "I got you Light" last laugh kind of thing.

yea... the scene was a little to gay for my tastes, even though i know it was looked at as a reference to a exerpt in the bible...

still though i gave the episode a 10/10.... very nice... Light is da man, as i said before, i'd follow him to hell and back....

if as u say,(the manga readers that is) the anime made him out to be more evil than the manga, than i'm thankful.... Evil is the new black...

I really loved that look on his face as he was holding L in his death... and the acting afterwards, was OMG... oscar winning perfomance IMO heh..

I have to see the episode myself to be impressed by how Madhouse did a better portrayal of this crucial scene in the plot than the manga.

An excellent farewell indeed for L. The big challenge for Madhouse would be to try and keep the vibe of the series at least as intriguing as before for the remaining 12 episodes without L in Light's way, as manga readers can attest to that.

Man, that was one of the best episodes yet. Easily the most powerful, and the most-well done, direction wise.

Light would kill L sooner or later, and the foreshadowing was thick this episode. Still, it was powerfully done, brilliant stuff.

Now I know everyone is saying how much the hate Light, but for some reason I'm always behind him. He does evil things, he's killed countless people, but I never want him to get caught.

It's weird, I often can't get behind a character I find despicable, like in A ClockWork Orange for example. But Light, while doing things that I can't condone... well, you just want the guy to succeed.

He's a pretty well done version of the devil. Evil, but he really charms you into getting behind him.

I wouldn't personally say that Light was dislikable at this point...but I thought that it was this point that Light started to become boring. It's like the whole "memory-lost" alternate Light's complexity versus his "evil" mindset development was completely thrown out of the bin. I know a major theme of DN is that absolute power corrupts, but damn...he's got not a second of remorse or 2nd thoughts.

Wow, I can't recall the last time I posted in the DN thread. It's been like...forever, despite following it.

Well, only comments for the last 20 or so episodes is much kudos to the amazing directing, be it pace-wise, atmosphere-wise or even visual-wise. In terms of manga adaption that is both faithful to the spirit and story, probably only Madhouse and Sunrise are really at the top of their game.

Dunno why, but i fell that this sentence, said to light, have... something i cant quite figure out...

If you watch how the anime captures this scene, you can see he is obviously saying "I know you are Kira".

To me it was quite obvious. The bells that L was referring to hearing were his death drawing near. He said, "sounds like a wedding... or maybe a...". Then Raito interrupts saying "don't talk like that". L was obviously going to say funeral next. L said "the conditions are favorable today, so you can't help but hear them(the bells)." The conditions L is talking about are his decision to go forward with the only option left. That option was to test the death note. He knew the probability of Raito being Kira was so high that this would likely spell his death. That 13 days rule was the only thing that stopped Raito from from being guaranteed to be Kira. As intelligent as L was, it would be unreasonable not to assume he knew what was going to happen. L wins though because this strongly indicates Raito as Kira. As soon as the only thing guarding his innocence was brought to be tested, both Watari and L died. That's beyond suspicious and if L is as brilliant as he's behaved, he has some people lined up to react to these anticipated circumstances. But I haven't read the manga so this is speculation. Honestly though, if you've been able to follow this story so far, it only makes sense. And in regards to the foot washing scene, it isn't uncommon in Asian culture to show a profound respect for a worthy adversary. These two could not help but care for each other in these regards.

These two were so equal that whoever had the death note would have likely won. Though, I might even go further to say, that the probability that they'd both lose is more likely. Don't count L's death as a win for Raito.

We need to see more out of Light then this 'I am God' phase --- at least some kind of emotion to do with the lose of L, especially after the rooftop/stairs scenes that were added. But no, i can't forget that Light is one evil piece of material, and all he cares about is becoming the new God. So yeah, a bit boring.

This episode was amazing. The way the black out happened, rem's red eye effect, thunder, data deletion ( i thought this data deletion thing, even though in a way irrelevant, was amazingly useful in showing the sense of urgency ).

First Point of View: Manga L VS Anime L

In this episode it comes as evident that we come to a clashing against two sides of L: The anime one and the manga one.
Honestly, I prefer the Anime L in this episode. Although being somewhat mistaken as having given up on his fight, I think of it another way. These whole extra scenes finally show a more human side to L and not just some super detective that the Manga presents. Even when Light and L talk in the rain and the stairs you see no mind and word games like you saw for the last 24 episodes, just some a bashing comment. Instead, with the Death of Higuchi, the appearance of Rem and the sudden killing comeback, L senses that everything is starting to crumble around him. And unlike Light, when Misa was captured, almost resigned to L, he didn't do the impossible to win. Because honestly, even the possible was not enough.
He said it himself before: "If this is just God's play, then all of this fight has been meaningless." And wasn't it Rem's play, a Death God's play in the end? Sure Light played that God as a marionette to his advantage but Light was fighting against something beyond the mortal world. We all knew he was against the odds. He just came to realize that when he saw Rem. All he could do now was keep fighting in hopes of a miracle. But all of us, even him knew that miracles don't happen for the good guys in Death Note.
So instead of that Bleach, Naruto and most action animes where the hero goes all "I can't die now" and ends up having a miracle to survive, L just decides to accept that sooner or later he could be very well dead. The bells ringing was brilliant to me. The whole Reaper's expression of "For whom the bells toll? It tolls for thee." was so well applied in this episode.
Along with the analogy with L/Jesus and Light/Judas and the foot cleaning scene. He knew. He wanted Light to know that he knew. Doesn't mean he was mad or wanted revenge. He was just sad that he failed.
And mostly, he was sad that after getting a friendship, he'd end up being betrayed. He was distant from relationships for most of his life like he said, and the one time he let himself have one, it ended in his death.

Second Point: Light's behavior during this whole episode

Light here oscillated so many times between Light personality and Kira personality. We all know now that the Death Note created a "Jekyll and Hyde" demeanor in him. At the beginning of the episode, we got a lot of Hyde. During the rain scene as L confessed, we got Jekyll slowly showing up again since Light regained the Death Note. At the foot scene, it was mostly Jekyll than Hyde and for a minute it seemed as Light was also a bit sad for what he was doing. Both could feel that if L and Kyra didn't exist, Ryuzaaki and Light could be friends.
And then the dreaded moment of all. Take notice at Light's face the first seconds when L starts to fall. It wasn't a grin, nor a laugh nor even something similar to happiness. It was pure dreaded shock. The same way he felt when Rem said he could easily kill him several episodes ago. A traumatizing fear coming from the loss of your rival...and of your friend. Even as he holds him in his arms he maintains that state of shock, until slowly, very slowly, like poison crawling into your body you see the full grin and eyes of Kira. You know at this moment that Light had truly died. From now on only Kira would pass judgment on the world.

Unfortunately, as great as this episode is, it is also the high point of the entire anime for me unless some drastic change is made. Because honestly, without hoping not to spoil anything, nobody becomes likable in this series for me and it ends in the most idiotic fashion I saw, for a series of this intellectual caliber.

Well to one he doesn't because that one is still in surveillance under the rest of the team. So for Misa's and Rem's, yes, he has full access to them.
