I actually had been looking forward to watching Gungrave, I even have a couple eps on my HD, but every description talks about this being one of the most depressing animes in the world rather than a pretty good action-packed thriller which I always thought it was, especially based on the video game images and commercials I've always seen...I'm glad I haven't watch it yet, don't think i ever will now...I wanted to be thrilled not cry...
Full Metal Alchemist is a pretty depressing story in spots and is pretty good... If you want your guts ripped outta your soul and have them laff at you try KGNE(Kimi ga Nozomu Eien)...I was able to watch this with a girl and have postive results after saying stuff like "I'd never leave you even after 3 years baby..." Yeah it worked^^...

If you really really want a sad anime that's going to make cry then my recommendation to you is to watch AIR. When I said AIR I mean watching all of them: the TV series, the summer special, and the movie. It has a very captivating storyline, plenty of romance (particularly the movie part), and so many things that will make you cry.
Other sad anime(s) you should also try: -> Kanon (from the same makers of AIR) -> Diamond Daydreams -- That's all I can think of - but really, you should watch AIR.

Yeah, they're still working on the next season. I don't know if it's sad or depressing. It's just the tone of the anime kind of put it in the "sad" slot for me. Not sure |

I would add one, the very first one that I saw is sad, X the movie. The song of forever love matches with the final scene...
But I would say the manga for some are more sad than the anime itself. But mostly not in the end... |

^ You didn't have to triple post there.
The one sad anime I recommend is Soukyuu no Fafner: Right of Left. It's a one episode hour long OVA so it should be quick to finish. It starts out normal, then gets gloomy, and in the end, hardcore depressing.
