the light novels are called "Mini-Skirt Space Pirates" and that was the assumed title of the anime when it was announced in spring 2009.

Then in fall 2010 they changed the title

Every time I see the original character designs I get a little more disappointed inside because I REALLY wish they had stuck to them for the anime... but the anime designs aren't bad by any means, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

Out of this -- Marika is the only one, who did not improve going left-to-right. For example, Chiaki is given a younger and more stern look. Improving those two attributes really really raised her character. The stern-ness in particular goes along with her demeanor, of calm and collected.

Joking aside, the scene in the car where Ririka bring closer Marika's head to hers is anime original. They still have the inside the car scene.
And the shooting training was altered quite heavily. But I think it was for the best for both Marika and Ririka, when the other two people were absent in the anime

They really should have stuck with the original design. I'm not complaining with the current one, I'm just confused as to why they need to change the art. The original is quite good. A bit of hints of Shoujo, but if Bones were the one to do this, it would have been stunning considering their work with Stardriver.

What about Kuurie? I think the original design fits the tone of the show much better than the doofy glasses.

Most of the design changes I don't mind but yeah the one for the girl with the glasses is disappointing. I don't know why they made her look so silly in the anime version compared to how she looks in the LN.

Not true, take Onegai Senpai and Monogatari Series as examples from this season... newer/reworked designs >>>usually>>> old and dusty ones
