Batteries are made from from one chemical acting as cathode and one acting as anode, which means there are no circuits in them which in turn would make it EMP proof, and still would be able to "zap" your brain, and not to mention that even using one would mean putting out entire tokyo in one blast lol.

Except if the EMP does work, forcibly disconnecting the player(s) in any way, i.e. without the proper logout sequences that an EMP would prevent as surely as simply pulling the helmet off, will kill them.

AWESOME~..one ep and already my top anime this season.
The art is really good and I want to see how this situation would play out. And .....usually anime like this make me wish that it's possible to play virtual games like this in real life. :\ Of course without the whole stuck inside the game problem :|

True, but I think that if players knew they were playing with their own lives on the line, they would tend to be much more cautious in MMORPG's. And so while it's likely that no one has ever played an MMORPG without dying before in real life, it's certainly possible as long as one is extra cautious.

I've actually managed to do that. (not die)
Granted, it was Super Robot Wars OG2, and I'd cheated my way to a number of good items, and relied on sticking Real Man Team Dad Badass Normal God of Gespenst Kai Kitamura where the enemies were the strongest, and then laughing away as every enemy with a cunning plan got Gespenst Kicked or Jet Magnum'ed for their troubles. Actually, all this reminds me of when I was playing Mass Effect 3 multiplayer. Lowe Gear can attest: the first time I tried Hydra Cerberus Bronze , I was repeatedly dying right left and center. Now I can solo Bronze Cerberus and Geth. Silver is tough but no problem, and I can actually handle White Geth Gold. (Well, so long as I haven't been watching a delightful episode of Moeretsu Pirates. Seeing DAT MARIKA and DEM LEGS and DAT SPACE SUIT tends to throw me off my game. ) Hell, consider D-Day. Massive casualties, which then decreased as the US troops leveled up and gained XP.

I had a friend who actually got a very high level in D2 hardcore. His journey ended when he left a town one day and an Amazon suddenly attacked him with homing arrows from past where his monitor even showed. He died before he could make it back into town and was so pissed he quit the game.

-Ridiculously cautious -Over level -Know boss tactics down to a T. Often all of the above. Can you imagine what it must be like to actively try to clear each floor? Theres no wiki to help you, you're going in completely in the dark and have no idea what to expect. Remember for MMOs like WoW, in order to update the wiki, someone had to explore the area(s), someone had to test what each ability does and what is optimal, and someone have to be the ones to fight the bosses, and they learn what to do; one death at a time.
