If manga readers expect anime-original viewers of Mira Nikki (like myself) to be patient with Yuki than why can't defenders of Guilty Crown expect its critics to be patient with Shu and Inori? There's no guarantee that I'll like how Yuki turns out based on the manga, even if a manga reader did. But I'm willing to be patient with him because I think major characters deserve some time to be fleshed out before you judge them to the degree that I've seen Shu and Inori judged on this thread.

It's completely unfair because they may not even be the same people in both fanbases. And if they are then it's better to ask them instead generalising entire fanbases. There's got to be like a hundred completely unrelated factors involved when saying that an entire fanbase should be consistent to another. I don't want to have to try and be consistent to a load of people I may or may not have similar views with and who I can not possibly be responsible for.

My point is mainly this - If a "Give them some time" defense of characters is taken as valid for other anime series (and it is, judging by the reactions I've seen to that defense on other series threads and series subforums) then it should also be a valid defense of Guilty Crown's characters. I know for a fact that over on Chihayafuru's series thread, you were one of the people defending Taichi a great deal, basically saying "give the guy a chance". Well, fair enough, I'm giving him a chance. All I'm saying here is give the characters in this show a chance too. And really, I don't get a sense that this is happening with a lot of people here. I know for a fact that Kirarakim has defended Shouma on the Penguin Drum series subforum, basically with the defense of "Ikuhara has big plans for him, you'll see". Well, Ok, fine. I'd say that the people behind Guilty Crown have big plans for Shu as well. Plans that may impact how his character ultimately comes off. I don't want to name names, guys, but if you keep pushing for people to name names then, well...

@Zealots in this thread: seriously guys, you don't need to defend everything. You guys are starting to look like those irrational Type Moon fans I see in the other boards. You should be more like HATE ON ME BROS, THIS SERIES IS FABULOUS AND YOU GUYS JUST DON'T KNOW IT YET or something ... you guys are wayyyy too serious (at not discussing the plot). I'm already regretting coming back in the thread. /runs |

This show is worth watching for the production values alone, which are nothing short of stellar. Nothing else about GC has caught my interest so far, and I facepalmed pretty hard at the transfer student card being played for the 9001st time (with good reason, the highschool comedy + mecha action combo works well), but I'll still watch this for the visuals and mecha porn.

I think that is unfair Triple R. You are right I defended both Shouma & Taichi's characterization (without going into detail because this is not the Penguindrum or Chihayafuru thread) because unlike Shu I actually think they are well written characters. Now if you go through this thread I said Shu is the type of character that has the potential to grow. However he is far less compelling character to me than both Taichi & Shouma. So I don't understand why I should bother defending Shu. The people who should defend Shu are the ones who do think he is a compelling character not me. Now I will go on defending the characters that I find compelling.

It's not zealotry. After all, I know nothing of this series other than what I've already watched, and I don't have the psychic powers necessary to tell whether this show would be good or bad in the end. I'm just urging patience, because people are acting as if they're demanding all character development and plot in just the first two episodes.

And once again I said he has the potential to grow so it's not like I was bashing him. I just wasn't defending him. Why should I defend something I do not feel passionate about?

OK, for a change of pace, I would like to discuss more about the actual content of this show.
I'm wondering where they will take Shuu's character after this episode. He turned down the Undertakers. Will this mean that Inori was sent by them in order to recruit him back? Or will a third option become available for Shuu to join up with? As of yet, we only met one faction of the Official government organization. Are there more factions that are actually good and be possible candidates for Shuu to join? They did also mention that there were only 3 Void Genome vials successfully created. If that is the case, who are the other 2? Were they stolen as well? What about the unsuccessful ones? Did they produce side effects. On top of that, besides Void Genomes, what other types of Genomes were created? The great thing about anime original series is that no one knows what is coming ahead. It allows for a lot of speculations, if people are willing to do so. There is so much we do not know, and I look forward to finding out about them eventually.

3 Void Genomes, one of which the MC has, and the other two are missing. Reminds me of Guyver and KR Faiz.
Possibilities for Shuu: * Joining the occupiers: unlikely due to plot. * Joining the Undertakers: probably. After all, Inori is one of them. If she wasn't sent to recruit him, then she was sent to watch him to make sure he doesn't betray them. And if Shuu doesn't join willingly, Gai might pull something to force him to join. That guy was willing to let civilians get executed as a signal to begin his plan last episode, after all. * Staying independent: probably not possible, since two armed and aggressive organizations are after him. I wouldn't be surprised if trying to do this will become a major pain for Shuu, if he finds out that there are schoolmates who are un/favorable to either group.

2) We actually have two antagonist "factions" so far. GHQ. And the research group/corporation called Sephirah Genomics (whether the "Sepharic Tree" scrolling in the OP hints at their goal or not remains to be seen), that the male scientist and Shu's mom is a part of. Presumably, despite there being some cooperation between the two, Shu's mom is not an evil person and thinks what she and Sephirah Genomics is doing is for the greater good. Another option is that Shu's mom has a change of heart when she realizes Sephirah Genomics is just an evil caricature like GHQ, and becomes the way Shu and Gai's harem defeat the evil corporation. I would much prefer the first choice. Shu's mom doesn't need to become another member of Gai's harem! I doubt...very much doubt...considering the writer, that we'll see any hint that there's any shades of grey concerning GHQ though. However, there is a slim possibility that Sephirah Genomics ends up being the big bad, and as we can already see from Episode One that GHQ acts like a subordinate to them, that the old GHQ commander ends up being a kind old man who decides enough is enough of being a corporation's lap dog and turns GHQ against Sephirah Genomics by the end of the series. A slim possibility. 3) I assume the other two are under lock and key by Shu's mom and Male Scientist That Remains Unnamed So Far at Sephirah Genomics. Anyone who's watched anime for more than two days should be able to assume that they will be used at some point. Likely by some antagonists similar to Daryl, if not Daryl himself. 4) Maybe they will come up with more "Genomes". If this was a long running shounen show like Bleach, I'd say it's guaranteed. It's two cour though, and since I suspect the Void Genome is intimately tied to the Apocalypse virus, I am not expecting the story to go that direction, but to stay focused on the Void Genome.

I could see Shu and Inori becoming a special ops team of sorts, that handles certain Undertaker missions that are best handled by a small two-person team.
Having there be a certain distance between Shu and the more "official" Undertaker group (now that they've gone a bit public, after all) could have real strategic and tactical advantages. Nice to have some hidden aces up your sleeve, so to speak.
