For PS3 games, game installation is entirely up the developer. A few would require that certain games have to be installed (e.g., MGS4 and DMC4) while others such as Valkyria Chronicles give that option to the user.

Seems that system software 3.0 will be shipped with these units. Not 100% certain, but it looks like installing other OS is scrapped with the new system version. Last edited by Sides; 2009-08-18 at 13:27. |

im not gonna buy it becaz i already have the 80 gb bc console and a ps2 (the original one ).
side notes: I notice that if I play ps2 games in ps3, there is a slight lack for the inputs, and it is more apparent with rhythm games like ddr. |

Hmm, the rumors I picked up in this previous post fortunately appeared to be dead on.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the slim as replacement for my noisy launch model (for anything not PS2 BC related anyway). I'll be waiting for a few reviews and user comments first though. I hope you can still upgrade the HDD btw. There is no access panel on the right where it used to be. But there does appear to be a panel on the lower-right side of the front... I suppose that's probably where they've relocated the HDD to. As for firmware 3.00... it doesn't look that revolutionary great to me. In fact, I hope you can turn some new things of, like the ticker. And I don't really need the PS Store icon everywhere. As for "Boot other OS"... haven't seen any comments yet that they took it out. If they did I can't blame them as that probably wasn't the most popular feature anyway, but I wonder what they'll do for universities wanting to build another PS3 based supercomputer. Edit: Hmm... seems that if you're from Europe and you happen to be in Japan... the PS3 Slim will be a bargain. 29980 yen = ~225 euro. Unfortunately the weight (=shipping costs) and custom duties probably make the system impractical to import through online shops. |

The HDD cover on th rPS3 does looks smaller than on the PS3, maybe a 1.8" drive? The other OS feature, was Sony's evolution to the ps2 linux kit, and it is for free. If th ecut the feature out, it gives people a reason to hack the system and make homebrew runable again. Honestly i don't really care about the ps3 slim, since it isn't technically updated, unlike the change happend with the psp-1000 and psp-2000. Every one should be happy, the new PS3 doesn't cost much more than a Blu-Ray player or a 360 Elite, and the people who already have one, err well... But what i really care is the games. With the new recession ps3 i hope we will now get a steady supply of either exclusives or properly optimised multiplatform games, no more jumping frame rates ffs. The ps3 has enough power to run games at 60fps, if the devs actually put some effort into it. However i suspect that the ps3 will be flooded with shoveware Wii and 360 ports, as it seems that sony have lowered their standards. official press release, highlighting the rebranding of the PLAYSTATION 3 to PlayStation 3 and new logo, and syncing up feature with the their own Bravia TV Sets. Apparently the UK rrp for both new sony consoles are the same PSPgo £249.99 and also PS3slim £249.99. Last edited by Sides; 2009-08-18 at 15:35. |

I saw the PS3 slim, it's good that Sony is finally putting out a new model to fend off Microsoft's XBox 360, but the only missing feature is backwards compatibility... Although it's thinner, I'm not getting a new one since I like my 80 GB model with backwards compatibility and being able to use memory cards and 4 USB ports.

aww they haven't kept with the black finish as the normal PS3, I don't like the look of that kinda textured plastic look.
but it sure did diet and could be very tempting really. Brother wants me to get another PS3 but gonna wait this one out for time being.

Sony planning 250GB PS3 Slim?
Source: An FCC filing brought to light by PS3 News. What we heard: Even though news of the PlayStation 3 Slim redesign leaked out six ways from Sunday before its official unveiling today, it was not for lack of surreptitious behavior on Sony's part. Just look at the FCC filing in question, which consists of radio test reports for 120GB and 250GB versions of Sony's slimmed-down PS3. The filing was not actually made by Sony, but instead by Sand Dollar Enterprise, a Foster City, California outfit that shares an address with Sony Computer Entertainment America. Then there's the Sand Dollar contact name given in the filing, SCEA senior vice president of legal Riley Russell. So clearly, this is a Sony filing. And although it doesn't explicitly include the PS3 Slim moniker, the filing lists the model numbers of the two systems as CECH-2001A and CECH-2001B. Sony's own press pictures of the PS3 Slim display the machine with the CECH-2000 model number, while the system's spec sheet lists its product code as "CECH-2000A." Of course, a PS3 Slim with 250GB of hard drive space falls right in line with Sony's penchant for multiple hardware configurations. The standard PS3 has been available in 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB, and 120GB packages, with or without PlayStation 2 backward compatibility, and with or without bundled games like Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Killzone 2. Clearly, it's not a question of if Sony will tweak the PS3 Slim configurations offered to consumers, but when. The official story: "We are not commenting at this time." - A Sony representative. Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that Sony is prepping a 250GB PS3 Slim package for possible release. The real question is when Sony will release it, what it will cost--and what Sony will pack in to the box to sweeten the deal. Source: Gamespot

I don't know... I just don't see the point of separate PS3 model with a bigger hard drive when it's already swappable anyway.
There should be another incentive other than a bigger hard drive. It just seems like a waste to manufacture such a redundant model. |

I think he was talking about another incentive for the rumoured 250GB PS3 slim other than its bigger hard drive.
We already know the 120GB slim model will have no BC, but there are still hopeful folks out there who still wish for it and see this new model as something to hope for. But yes, I don't think this rumour will grant their wish. Me? I'm already quite happy with my 60GB. |

Sony Explain Why The PS3 Slim Has No Backwards Compatibility The design looks awful.. And it even has lesser features than the original. The only good thing is the size and weight but the fact is that how many gamers would move their console around? Probably none.. ---- It seems that there is a slight difference. The new model offers 40Gb more than the latter at the expense of useful features. A question. What is the point of having such a large storage capacity? How many gigs do most games require for installation and also save files? Updated: It seems that the 80Gb model does not have PS2 backwards compatibility either. This is rather disappointing as that I have quite a few DVD-9 PS2 games that don't work right now. Then, what special features does making the 80Gb model superior to the new 120Gb slim? Currently, I don't see any aside from the nice design itself. Last edited by Shadow Kira01; 2009-08-19 at 04:47. Reason: updated. |
