"Alternative universe" (Omnibus) format in anime series

Just being curious: what do you people think about the "alternative story" format of some anime series, like "Amagami" or "Photo Kano"? I personally find it rather interesting, as it gives each viewer the possibility to have a story where the character is focused on solely the heroine of their choice, while the other stories can just be dismissed as alternative universes, if they want. I mean, in my opinion it's better than harems with only one ending where the hero is made wavering between the heroines and not making a choice until the last episode. In the "Amagami" format at least all characters are developed, each in their own universes, without making the main hero similar to a womanizer.

By the way. does anybody know how this format was received in Japan, if there are other similar projects?

Well, in Muv-Luv, we have Shirogane travel through both space and time to save his beloved. And it is one of the best Visual Novel series!

I haven't watched it yet. But is it like Amagami and Photo Kano, meaning are there alternative stories each presenting "what will happen if things turn differently"?

I think the term you're looking for is the "Omnibus" format.

Where the Anime shows all the routes of the story, am I right?

Yes, I think that's the right term. I mean, the format where the character doesn't just go from one girl to another during the same story, but where there are alternative stories representing different routes.

As far as I know (Which doesn't say a lot) the other series that does this is "Yosuga no Sora".

As for reception in Japan... Kinda neutral I think? Whether it'll catch on or not is hard to tell since the industry is moving away from galge visual novel adaptations these days.
