uh...no. That line is a quote used in a typical Japanese outdoor activity played by children. It's somewhat like hide-and-seek, except the child acting out as the "demon" is blindfolded and the other children claps their hands saying that line. The objective is for the "demon" to capture one of the other kids relying on their sense of hearing since the demon is blind. Once the "demon" is successful in capturing one of the other kids, they switch places.

Translated, that line becomes: "Here here oni-san, follow the clapping hands"

Obviously, this is a metaphor for Higurashi's storyline. It is an excellent way to portray the "blindness" of the mystery in a village that is rumored to have demons dwelling within it, and how the viewer can only rely on what is given.

Just do like me
When the vocal is bad just focus away from the lyrics, set your mind on /ignore mode, and treat the voice like some other instrument you don't understand. Then it's usually not too bad.

KJ, always kicking ass.

Arimfe : Problem is, what should I do if I don't like the voice either.

Give up and skip it probably

I don't mind the song actually, the relaxing tune normally suits my mood after watching one of the episodes (in a kind of 'need to relax after all that' way) but yeah, the singing is meh. It reminds me somewhat of the vocal song they used in the .hack//GU trailers... if anyone heard the E3 2005(?) trailer version, it was originally in English and, well, crap. By TGS they clearly realised it didn't work, and they changed it to Japanese but with the same tune. I love it now Shame the B-side to the single probably won't be a Japanese version though.

Here are lyrics to the vocal version of "you". I might go around translating it later, if I have time. I've never written out song lyrics before, so please tell me if I have done anything wrong.

Kanji version:

Romaji version:

Anata wa ima doko de nani wo shiteimasu ka?
Kono sora no tsuzuku basho ni imasu ka?

Ima made watashi no kokoro wo umeteitamono Ushinatte hajimete kizuita
Konna ni mo watashi wo sasaete kuretaita koto Konna ni mo egao wo kureteita koto
Ushinatte shimatta daishou wa totetsu mo naku ookisugite
Torimodosou to hisshi ni Te wo nobashite mo gaku keredo

Marude kaze no you ni suri nukete todokisou de todokanai

Kodoku to zetsubou ni mune wo shimetsukerare kokoro ga kowaresou ni naru kedo
Omoide ni nokoru anata no egao ga watashi wo itsumo hagemashite kureru

Itsumo soba de waratteiyou Anata no sugu soba de

Anata wa ima doko de nani wo shiteimasu ka?
Kono sora no tsuzuku basho ni imasu ka?
Itsumo no you ni egao de ite kuremasu ka?
Ima wa tada sore wo negai tsuzukeru

You Translation

You

What are you doing now, at what place?
Are you at a place where this sky continues into?

I lost that which has buried my heart until now and noticed it for the first time
The fact that you had been supporting me this much
The fact that you had been giving me smiles this much
The price of having lost it is way too preposterously great
And I desperately reach out my hands and struggle to recover it, but-

It slips by just like the wind; it looks like I'll reach it but I don't

My chest is tightened by loneliness and despair and my heart seems to break
But your smiling face that remains in my memories always encourages me

Let's return to that time again; I'm sure that you'll be all right this time
I'll always laugh by your side, right by your side...

What are you doing now, at what place?
Are you at a place where this sky continues into?
Will you be there with a smile like always?
Now I simply keep wishing for that

EDIT: Thanks, Sushi-Y

o_O I found the first two music videos to be simply amazing... So I had to find the lyrics to them to see how much they add to the visuals.

Nakanai Kimi to Nageki no Sekai (You who Don't Cry and the World of Bewailing)
Song used in the music video:

bewailing
Vocals: Shinra Etsuko

Kanji:

Romaji:

Kizukeba Warai naita ano hibi ga
Modosenai mono ni barabara ni sarete

Uso to uso o kasaneta dake no
Kanashimi to Itami dake
Tsukimatou higurashi to natsu no kaori
Wasurete mo Kesenakute

Kiesaru basho wa akaku somatteku
Shiranu man ni chikazuku oto ga kitateru

Kirisakarete ita omoide dake
Kawarazu ni Kagayaite
Kono yuugure no nageki no naka ni
Kowashite mo Matteru

Nukeochite mienaku natte iku
Kanashimi mo Itami sae
Aa Mata higurashi to natsu no kaori
Nakushite mo Kienakute

Translation:

If you'd notice, those days when we laughed and cried
Have been scattered into pieces of something unrestorable

Only the sadness and pain
Of just having one lie stacked on another lie
Even if we forget the cicadas and scent of summer that follow behind
We can't erase them

The vanishing place is being dyed red
Before we knew it, the approaching sound comes

Only my memories that were cleaved apart
Shine unchanged
Within the bewailing of this dusk
Even if I destroy them, you'll be waiting

They are being pulled off and turning invisible-
Sadness, and even pain, too
Ah, even if we lose the cicadas and scent of summer again
They won't disappear

...I'll post the lyrics to Tsuki wa Noboru, Watashi wa Utau (used in Nakanai Kimi to Nageki no Sekai -Soushunfu-) later.

Is it possible to get the songs from the three Nakanai Kimi to Nageki no Sekai via web orders in U.S.? I'm interested in listening to higher-qualitied versions of the songs rather than the static-ish music from YouTube. ^^;;

Oh, the song to the second video is so sad. I wonder whose point of view the lyrics are from... Mion or Shion? And to whom? Keiichi or Satoshi?

Nakanai Kimi to Nageki no Sekai -Soushunfu- (You who Don't Cry and the World of Bewailing -Early Spring Ode-)
Song used in the music video:

月ハ昇ル、私ハ詠ウ
Tsuki wa Noboru, Watashi wa Utau
The Moon Rises, I Sing

Vocals: Shinra Etsuko

Kanji:

Translation:

The white light that sadness examines and carries
Only illuminates the unsalvageable path of fate

I've realized, look, that every time when your hands
Touched me, that's right, my heart wavered
Things that I want to tell you increase in number
While I remain like this, they simply accumulate

I can't forget it, even if it's painful
I don't want to forget it "at least", or so I wish

I'm sure that I can't restore the broken happiness that stabs at my chest
I can't meet you and I seem to go mad, but I want to tell you my feelings...

When our eyes meet, I immediately joke around with you
By deceiving you, I run away

I can't become strong if I'm by your side
I want to become strong "at least", or so I wish

I believed that even if I'm selfish, I would still be able to change
Even though I merely want to meet you with an honest, smiling face
I'm sure that I can't restore the broken happiness that stabs at my chest
Even if all of my body are falsehoods, I want to tell you my feelings...

Screams embrace, our, hearts
Now, separate, along with tears...

The beautiful, white light that appears to freeze
Only illuminates the unsalvageable path of fate

My feelings that don't reach you anymore are fleeting
Only the voices of cicadas are unchanged like back then, in the sky

Well, first of all, it has been almost a year since the last release (Utage was released back in C68), so I doubt you can find their CDs anymore, except maybe on Yahoo auction.

(Each of these CDs included hi and low res versions of the movies, as well as 2 vocal tracks (one of which is used in the movie) + wallpapers)

Now, as for the "static-ish" thing, I can tell you this: that's pretty much what they really sound like. ^^; The only thing I did to compress the audio was converting the original audio source into 160kbps mp3, and as far as I can tell, the YouTube versions sounded pretty much the same as the originals.

I think the problem is with the track themselves (especially "bewailing", because of the intense sound ranges): these aren't the kind of tracks you'd want to play on crappy speakers or headphones, especially if you're the kind of person who likes to crank up the bass and treble settings. ^^; You should try adjusting your speaker or computer audio settings and then try listening to the tracks again. (A good test point would be the "嘘と嘘を重ねただけの (悲しみと) 痛みだけ" part of "bewailing", pay special attention to the cymbals) Both my speakers and headphone replays the audio from the YouTube videos beautifully.

As for the lyrics from Soushunfu, well, they probably describes both Shion and Mion's thoughts, depending on who's on screen at the time (for example, the second segment is the part about Mion (目が合えば すぐふざけあって)).

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Image Album - Kakera Musubi (still in production)

http://www.animate.tv/kakera-musubi/

Featuring:
Katakiri-san,
大嶋啓之 from Voltage of Imagination. Favours exotic-sounding compositions (...don't like his music much, actually)
Morrigan from "WAVE." Has the ability to compose and arrange in a very wide range of genres. Doujin music god. WAVE already released an ultra quality Higurashi doujin music CD some years back
zts, one of the composers of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai fame
(Yuzuki-san), who sang the vocals on the "Thanks/you" soundtrack and plays Rena in the doujin radio drama version of Higurashi.

...that is an all-star cast from the doujin music world! Ryukishi-san is going to be working on the lyrics together with Katakiri-san as well. Can't wait for it to come out!

p.s. as long as Katakiri-san doesn't try to sing English/Engrish again...Katakiri-san only has average Engrish, but for some odd reason loves writing and singing Engrish lyrics. Japanese lyrics please! >.<

Updated members:
bermei.inazawa of "studio campanella." Old and well-respected composer.
interface. Lyric writer, works with studio campanella.
...who? Know nothing about them...
(Shimotsuki-san) of "Maple Leaf." Sang the EDs of the two Rozen Maiden series. My favourite singer ever. Like Rekka-san, mostly does professional work these days, but still occasionally cranks out the odd doujin music CD. Voice is perfect for fantasy world genre songs, and improving in other genres.
Has a voice kinda similar to Shimotsuki-san's, but loves producing weird music. She, Rekka-san and Shimotsuki-san are friends, and are often involved in each other's music.

I think the main reason the ending theme is sort of not given the respect it
could have is that they placed a phasing effect on the singer making her
unusual english pronunciating even even more strange. Try singing a song
and put your voice thru a phasing effect using something like Cooledit and
you'll see what I mean.
