you have to break down the name into parts to make it work sometimes

Tsu=steal
Na=indicates emotion or emphasis
de=Rising(of the sun or moon)

Name relations

It's also interesting to see how the names play out in relation to each other.

Ino-Shika-Chou is the winning hand in Hafuda. It is why the team is designed to have such great teamwork.

Of the Hyuuga clan, Neji is the only one who's name doesn't begin with a H. Hinata is the only one whose name doesn't end in an I. That separates them from the rest of the clan and relates the to the clan at the same time.

Sasuke and Itachi are a great example of characters. Sasuke is named after a legendary Japanese warrior. Itachi means weasel. The heroics of Sarutobi Sasuke are self imposed on Uchiha Sasuke. Itachi's name sake has to do with his nature. I wonder if there is any legends involving Sarutobi Sasuke and a weasel.

Kiba means fang and akamaru means red. Kiba's mom is Tsume, meaning talon and her ninken is kuromaru, meaning black. Kiba's sister is Hana, meaning nose, and her ninken are Haimaru Sankyodai, the grey triplets.

Aburame Shino bears a close resemblance to the Japanese word for cockroach, aburamushi

The legendary three have names taken from a classic kabuki. I haven't figured out any relationship between Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke though.

Symbolic Names in Naruto *possible spoilers*

When authors name their characters, they don't simply pull out random names from a hat. There has to be some sort of significance. While there are other names that definately have symbolism involved, I'm afraid at this moment I only have enough energy to write about one of Kishimoto's characters. I thought Sasuke's older brother Itachi was an interesting choice of name.

Why would he name Sasuke's older brother Itachi of all things? Itachi means "weasel." Many specific characteristics accompany the word weasel. For example, traits like ambiguity, cunningness, and deceitfulness come to mind. When a person evades an obligation, they will also be called a "weasel." Not only that, on Wikipedia it states that "weasels are considered bad luck in Japan."

From what we've seen so far, Itachi can most definately be identified as a weasel. His persona is so mysterious and his motives are never really truly revealed. Although Itachi is presented as an antagonist, could that really be the case?

My thoughts:
Spoiler for series:

Well in my Japanese dictionary Maru is another word for boy and Mari is for girl so

Temari means dancing girl.

Shikamaru means deer boy or lazy boy. I don't remember which one is right.

Going strictly off of Shikamaru's demeanor in the show, I'd have to say the latter.

A temari is actually a japanese ball

Literally it means "hand ball"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temari_(toy)

Of course, many of the names in Naruto are written in Katakana instead of Kanji, making the meanings of some a bit harder to decipher.

And the Shika in Shikamaru does mean Deer

Shika- Deer
Maru- Common Male suffix the common literal translation of the kanji of maru is "circle" or "whole"

well one thing about Kish. story telling is him incorporating mythology into the story.

Hyuga is closely related in Japanese Mythology for the creation of Amaterasu, Tsukiyomi, and Susano since in the mythology Izanagi bathed in a river in Hyuga.

So I came up with a theory. The Uchiha are heavily implied to have an affinity to fire.

Well since in the mythology Izanagi bathes in a river that was located in Hyuga I'm going to theorize that their affinity is water. At first I thought wind, but after thinking about it I think the taijutsu that the Hyuga have flows like water. Not only, but water has also been used as a symbol of insight. In many Asian cultures water is a symbol of balance and harmony. Although water's meaning dealing with chakra are "relationships, violence, addictions, basic emotional needs, and pleasure. Physically, governs reproduction, mentally it governs creativity, emotionally it governs joy, and spiritually it governs enthusiasm" But to put it simply in Tibetan-Buddhism this form of chakra is associated with the unconscious and emotion. It is the second of the primary chakras.

The third of the primary chakras is pretty much fire. It deals with "the sense of sight, and the action of movement. Manipura is "the center of etheric-psychic intuition: a vague or non-specific, sensual sense of knowing; a vague sense of size, shape, and intent of being." If the Hyuga name means in the direction of the sun and Amateratsu is the sun than it would support further relationship between the Uchiha and Hyuga are related.

I don't think it shows anything in particular, but it was interesting at the least...

yeah, well basically

Chan is used for babies, young children, and teenage girls. It may also be used towards cute animals, lovers, close friends, or any youthful woman.

Kun is generally used for boys and by persons of senior status in addressing or referring to those of junior status.

San is the most commonplace honorific, and is a title of respect typically used between equals of any age.

Sama is a markedly more respectful version of san. It is used mainly to refer to people much higher in rank than oneself. When used to refer to oneself, sama expresses extreme arrogance.

Senpai is used to address or refer to one's senior colleagues in a school, company, sports club, or other group.

Kohai is a junior, the reverse of senpai.

Sensei is used to refer to or address teachers, doctors, politicians, lawyers, and other authority figures.

I've heard the others before at some point, but I've never heard about how Neji and Hinata's names differ from their clan before. I guess it's because my understanding of Japanese is very rudimentary. Very cool observation.

I think this is just a coincidence. it's not like we know the names of the whole clan. are we really to believe that all the others' names start with H and end in I? I doubt it
