Probably because she is on every japanese cover too. I admit it is a bit curious that it is just her and noone else. Not that I would mind looking at just her herself... Not at all.
Still better than the German ones in my opinion... Spoiler for covers of the German edition:
Those are cut-outs from the japanese covers with the mood turned backwards by switching the background. |

I don't recall the fansubs having ~desu in the first place. Everyone just heard it and figured out the personality quirk. There's really no real way to translate it. It's one of the aspects of Japanese that gets lost in translation (like politeness levels and such). Speaking styles just don't come across well in written english. When they bring the anime over, I'm sure Sui will get a "snobby-yet-cute" voice to match her character. And reading over Suiseiseki's lines in the TP manga, the "Yes"s are cut back and relatively make sense in context (ie: "I hate humans.... Yes." and "We'll make the impish [TP's tranlation/adaptation of Chibi Ningen is Imp] tree bloom.... Yes?") There has to be some degree of adaptation to make the story flow better.
When things like ~desu or ~ttebayo are translated into english, they tend to not sound well. Obviously, Naruto comes into play. When he started saying "Believe it" there was a HUGE fan outcry, most of them not realizing it was just a translation of ~ttebayo which occured much more frequently in the Japanese. As for the manga itself, so far I'm liking it, except for the poorly drawn chibi designs. It was a problem I had in DearS too. |

I think it's because desu is a part of Japanese speach as is. nyo, ni and such can be left untranslated because they don't really have a meaning. I've also seen some where they substituted the english equivalent (like Ribbit instead of kero and meow instead of nya. Desu just doesn't translate well to anything.

I still keep thinking Rozen Maiden as being pretty shoju, like, it's about dolls, gothic lolita and pretty feminine things...........and while there are pleanty of bishouju, they arn#t really the sexy fanservicy types (certainly nothing like the ones in DearS, if you read Rozen Maiden for more Ren and Mius, you're going to be disapointed.) But kudos for Peach Pit for making it okay for boys like me to like dolls. (I always have anyway, lol.)
Anyways.......does anyone have the dates for the Tokyopop mangas? I wait hopefully by the new manga section at Gosh or Forbidden Planet, lurking for Rozen Maiden 3.........but to no avail. |

Is it like the cine-mangas you see, like they just take pictures of the anime epesodes, and make it into a manga? (I remember gaspign when I saw a Haibane Renmai manga, and was very disapointed to see it was a cine-manga instead.)
Hmm...........I remember Del-ray kept the "Hitzuten" in xxxHolic, and simply gave a description of it at the end, since there is no real english equivlient of the word. |
