French culture minister in new scandal after 'boy sex' row

BORDEAUX, France (AFP) – French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand was back in the spotlight Saturday for standing as character reference for two rapists after a row over his admission of paying "boys" for sex.

Mitterrand, an urbane television personality and a nephew of former Socialist president Francois Mitterrand, adopted a pugnacious tone and threatened legal action over what he said was a "new orchestrated campaign of insensitive calumny."

Mitterrand told a news conference in Bordeaux, southwestern France, that he "will launch legal action against those who are complicit in the latest ignominy."

Earlier in the day, Mitterrand -- who was in Bordeaux for the opening of an art exhibition -- was jostled by about 30 far-right supporters who screamed "Hands off our children," and "Mitterrand resign."

Marine Le Pen, the vice-president of the far-right National Front party, on Saturday lambasted Mitterrand for being a "false witness," and "trying to directly influence a judge," with his testimonial.

The latest scandal emerged just after Mitterrand seemed to have ridden out a furore over his 2005 autobiographical novel "La Mauvaise Vie" (The Bad Life) in which the hero describes paying Asian boys for sex.

The novel has become the top selling book on the French version of the online bookseller Amazon.

Mitterrand had angrily denied having ever engaged in paedophile acts or condoning sex tourism.

"I absolutely condemn sexual tourism (and) I condemn paedophilia in which I have never in any way participated, and all the people who accuse me of that type of thing should be ashamed," the 62-year-old told TF1 television.

The latest controversy emerged after a French newspaper said Mitterrand had testified to the "good character" of two youths in the French overseas territory of La Reunion charged with the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl.

The minister on Saturday said he was godfather to one of the youths, whose mother is a former make-up artist, and underlined that his letter was a "gesture of compassion and generosity" to a "modest" family in "great distress."

He underlined that he had met his godson "three times in (my) life."

"Is it not a shame that this letter has found its way in all the Internet networks?" he said, calling it an "ignominy," a "shame," and "manipulation."

He expressed his "disgust and indignation in the face of these repeated and systematic attempts which verge on a manhunt," and added that he had "very strongly" denounced the rape and had never professed "any apology or understanding" of the act.

He won support from President Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP party, whose deputy spokesman Dominique Paille condemned what he termed a "manhunt".

"This manhunt, this media chase is something which is sickening in the eyes of the French. It is high time that this stopped," Paille said.

Le Quotidien de la Reunion newspaper on Friday published a letter that Mitterrand, who was then director of the Villa Medici, the French Academy in Rome, had written to the court in March.

The two youths and an accomplice were charged with rape and sentenced to between eight and 15 years in prison.

Said Larifou, one of the lawyers for the boys' families, told AFP he was filing a suit against the leaking of the letter, saying it "should never have appeared in the public domain."

The controversy over Mitterrand's book erupted this week after his staunch defence of film-maker Roman Polanski, arrested in Switzerland on a US warrant over three-decades-old child sex charges.
The news is that Mitterrand really like to defend the criminals. After Polanski, he chose to defend two young people, and a friend of those two, who raped a 16yo girl.

Poll: Majority of French want Culture Minister Mitterrand to stay despite sex scandal
http://www.google.com/hostednews/can...Hut7UrZm3RmUcQ

PARIS — A new poll shows strong support for French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand despite calls that he resign because of a controversy over a book he wrote describing paying young men for sex in Thailand.

The poll released Monday by the BVA Institute shows that 67 per cent of those questioned do not want Mitterrand, the nephew of late President Francois Mitterrand, to step down. Only 20 per cent of respondents say they want Mitterrand to resign.

Mitterrand went on national television Thursday to defend his honour after a leader of the far-right National Front party went on television to read excepts from Mitterrand's 4-year-old book. He condemned sex tourism, although he acknowledged having paid males for sex. He denied ever having participated in pedophilia.

The poll was conducted by telephone Oct. 9-10 among 1,005 people over age 15 in France. No margin of error was given.

Members of President Nicolas Sarkozy's conservative government have defended Mitterrand against attacks from extreme-right politicians and from the Socialist Party.

"The Mitterrand affair is over," Xavier Darcos, the secretary general of the ruling UMP party was quoted as saying in an interview published Monday in Le Parisien newspaper.

"Frederic Mitterrand said things in a strong and clear manner," Darcos said.
Like many French today to who I talked to, I still have some doubts about this poll. A lot of people, whether it is on internet (forums, online polls etc.) or IRL showed anger and disgust towards Mitterrand.

It really seems fishy to me.

Lol this poll must be a joke since many other poll are not like that : Here is one from LeMonde :

http://www.lemonde.fr/a-la-une/sonda...ens_id=1241480

And 1,005 people is not the same thing as 60Million people...

Now Mitterand leave our gouvernment. We don't want someone like you as your Culture Minister

And what gett on my nerve too are the reaction of some socialist like Bernard-Henri Lévy

This smells of bribery. It's quite disgusting how politicians can just do anything they want because money takes them above the law.

... Bribery? Who was bribed, and by whom?

It's just about notoriety. Mitterand thinks he can do whatever the hell he wants because of his family name, and now because of his position. And it looks like he's right.

It's funny. I've always thought politicians were liars and thieves. Now, after the Polanski and Mitterand affairs, it looks like I'm going to have to add "pedophiles" to the list.

He bribed the people in charge of the polls imho. Considering popular gossip regarding this, it's hard to believe those polls are right. Kinda makes me wonder if Mitterand had a say in them or not.

He = mitterrand ?

Might rather be the government. Mitterrand became the Minister of Culture because our president Sarkozy decided it. It was the president's choice (I heard it's because his wife, Carla Bruni, advised him to choose Mitterrand).

So, to fire him would be like admitting a big error.

Actually, his response was pretty logical, and it was to the point, pointing to the excessiveness surrounding his case. You can actually think of him showing the real character of humans, more like ignorance towards what happen around them when it is not about them in any way, but stick to the case of a person like Polanski because they just happen to know him.

I also wonder how the Mitterrand name is still in the politics, considering all the past scandals surrounding the name and the family.

Schwarzenegger signs gay rights bills (kind of):
Quote:
From the Sacramento Bee:

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed two gay rights bills, one honoring late activist Harvey Milk and another recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states.

In the last of hundreds of bill actions taken before midnight Sunday, Schwarzenegger approved the two bills by Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco.

The governor last year vetoed the measure declaring May 22 a state day of recognition for Milk, suggesting that the former San Francisco supervisor be honored locally. But he subsequently named him to the California Hall of Fame.

Leno's SB 54, meanwhile, requires California to recognize marriages performed in other states where same sex marriage is legal.

In a signing message, Schwarzenegger said California will not recognize the couples as married but will "provide the same legal protections that would otherwise be available to couples that enter into civil unions or domestic partnerships out-of-state. In short, this measure honors the will of the People in enacting Proposition 8 while providing important protections to those unions legally entered into in other states."

-Dan Smith
First of all, why does having a Harvey Milk Day constitute the bill being described as a gay rights bill?

Secondly, while slow and steady wins the race, if California is going to give full legal rights to all gay or lesbian couples married outside of the state, why doesn't it simply go the extra mile and just make same-sex marriage legal again in California?

Whatever the case, it is still good news for the Gay Rights movement in California.

Less hassle and fewer debates by CA politicians and constituents possibly? This looks like a good way for Arnie to net at least a few brownie points on the liberal side of CA politics. He's not going to make everyone happy - no matter what he decides - but at least he's not going to make other states unhappy by saying, "No, California will ignore your laws and marriage contracts, and declare them void here." It should also help in dealing with problems coming up for people's wills, child adoptions, taxes and so on, IMHO.

Because it takes so much goddamn resources to give the LGBT people some goddamn rights.

Goddamn, brotha.

And yes, I see it as the Governator deciding he couldn't piss off the neanderthals that make up a sizable portion of his voters by actually trying to pass a bill legitimizing gay marriage, so he did the next best thing to gain some brownie points with liberals.

Go to Iowa, get married and then come back home, then your marriage is recognized in your home state. Did this totally water down Prop 8 into nothing more than outlawing the wedding on California soil? Awesome and hilarious if that is the case.

Defense chief reaffirms end of Japan's refueling mission in January

Quote:
The defense minister told a press conference that the Maritime Self-Defense Force fleet deployed in the refueling mission ''will withdraw based on the law'' next January.

''As the foreign minister said, we have no plans to submit a new bill in the upcoming extra Diet session to redeploy'' the MSDF personnel for the operations, he said.

''We share Foreign Minister Okada's idea and will discuss what types of contributions we can make in the future,'' Kitazawa said, referring to Japan's alternative support plan for Afghanistan.
Quote:
The government led by Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama's Democratic Party of Japan has suggested it will offer civilian support to help reconstruct conflict-ravaged Afghanistan instead of or along with the refueling mission.

''We believe that agricultural reconstruction and civilian support for local people would lead to a fundamental solution to what constitutes the basis of terrorism,'' Hirano said.
The reason why the number of Taliban recruits always increase is that life in Afghanistan must be quite horrible. Otherwise, it is rather difficult for anybody to convince anybody else to die for them by killing other people over the cause of protecting sovereignty. Obviously, if life in Afghanistan becomes eventually better, the number of Taliban recruits will start to decrease, not to mention that their leaders and executives will also have second thoughts. This concept can be applied to the United States as comparison. If the United States is currently getting occupied by other countries and some groups of people are organizing terrorist attacks, how many Americans will actually join for the cause for protecting their country and commit terrorism? Probably not very many.. For that matter, providing agricultural support and civilian support in the form of increasing food production and welfare benefits, I think the number of Afghans turning to terrorism will significantly decrease after a period of time.

North Korea Test-Fires 5 Short-Range Missiles

Quote:
A South Korean official says North Korea test-fired five short-range missiles Monday off the east coast of the communist state.

The official says North Korea warned vessels to avoid its east coast from October 10 to the 20, an indication that it was planning missile launches. No other details of the missile test were available.
Perhaps, it is a regular military drill. However, it also gives the impression that this is the true meaning of North Korea's willingness to return to six-party talks. Its been less than 48 hours when China managed to convince North Korea to do the right thing and they fires 5 short-ranged missiles. I thought China had actually succeeded in getting the stubborn North Korea to back down from their hostility and nuclear ambitions but it seems that China wasn't very successful as that North Korea is most likely doing this on their own.

Since I don't have a good educational certificate, I would certainly join in the fight as a merc if there is war in that region.

Rachel is one of the top handful of intelligent analysts on American television these days (anywhere on the political spectrum). She leaves most other reporters, pundits, or analysts in the dust.
