In chapters 158 and 159, we are introduced to a new character, first year Hibino Fuyumi (one year kouhai to Hayate and friends). How should I define her?

Spoiler for Slight spoiler about Hibino Fuyumi:

She's a person with "normal economic/social status," and actually somewhat similar to Nishizawa. Over-the-top naive, slightly mindless, very moe and cute. Takes everything word-by-word and is easily impressed at everything. Here's what our new girl looks like:

connects back to the video research club chapter. Makimura has an embarassing-kodak-moment item (a audio cassette tape) of Maria, and Maria eventually destroys it anyone can see it. We get to see a glimpse of Makimura and Maria during their school years. Makimura is basically Yukiji-lite, and Maria is just . Strangely dependable and straightforward, yet has a childish side which she's embarassed to show to others. Highly "tsundere" (as in bipolar).

Could she be a younger and less mature maria?

Considering that the conversion about hayate not "worthy" enough to have a girl friend due to financial reasons at that young age does not really reflect a "rich spoilt girl".. more likely, it reflects a "mature" girl who knows about some of the difficulties of the world and is more aware of such concerns. A rich girl wouldn't mind anyway since she herself is already rich. but maria, although adopted, and aware of her orphan status, would be likely to say such things when young, before she acquire a more gentle side?

Similar reasons with that for maria. Even more than maria, hina undergoes money problem as a child when her parents abandoned her sister and her to a great debt (though still less than hayate). The kick and stuff also seems to suit her outright/frank and oft boyish manners. Only thing that made me place her as #2 is because of the art work (hmmm... anybody can find a link online to an image?). In the artwork, the girl seems older, and have slightly curly hair which seems to fit maria's profile more. Another factor to consider is that she knows the story of hayate's ex-girlfriend. Though not discounting she could have forgotten the incident totally she said when she is very young, it also sort of lower her suspect rating...

#suspect 3, based on money-mindedness......... Yukiji? nay... can't be.... impossible... eh.. right?

Yay! finally a Hina episode, and quite funny too! Chapter 162.

Spoiler for Chapter 162:

Ayumu prods Hina telling her that Hayate thinks she dislikes him. This comes as a shock to Hina, but she has too many memories of being standoff-ish that she doesn't know where to start. So, Hina resolves to become a kinder person. However, her forced smile freaks out the other characters (Yukiji, student council squad), and they determine that Hina is so upset that she's smiling.

To help Hina out of her perceived bad mood, the student council squad recruit Hayate to ask Hina out for a date (supposedly since he is the last person to act indecently to Hina) and gives him tickets to the movie "The Adventures of the Baby Kitten". And so! Hayate asks Hina out, Hina accepts with a smile, and Hayate also freaks out

Erm... would someone mind telling me what volume this is currently up to? I've just finished Vol.14 RAW, and I thought thats all thats released at the moment, yet the recent summaries are unknown to me.

So to sum it up, is it Vol.15 now? And where do you people get these? (I know it's licensed and stuff, but I don't think I can wait until ViZ catches up, and by then, the story might be over with.) V_V

Chap 164 is absolutely brilliant!

Spoiler for ridiculously brief points:

- Hayate brought Hina to an amusment park for the continuation of their 'date'.

- Needless to say, she had enjoy it better than the moive

- Tons of Dere-mode Hina !

- At first I thought things would end bad when Hayate told Hina that the other girls ask him to date her. But Thankfully he was smart to salvage the situation !

- But most important of all, Hina said the magic words

"Beside, even if I were asked out on a date, I wouldn't go with someone I don't like..."

Yeah, Ch.164 was pretty nice. The amusement park was a MUCH better choice than the movie. However, I'm still a bit lost at the middle on how he got the tickets, since it was implied it wasn't cheap.

<3 Hina's many moods. It was hilarious to see Hayate try and juggle Hina's mood swings. Theres the vast majority of rage, but the moments where she was happy about things were just as good, and Hayate was able to enjoy it regardless of how she was acting.

I just wish that my Chinese was better so I can read it without having to guess so much. V_V

...Hayate didn't HEAR these words. The passing train drowned Hina's indirect confession, and Hayate didn't understand her. He even asked Hina to repeat what she said, but... ^_^;

Poor Hina, in a way. She really went through an emotional rollercoaster here. After all the ups and downs, she genuinely enjoyed the date with Hayate... and at the very end, she asked him "why?"
Why was she invited to this date? (They established before that this WAS a "date", expressis verbis).

Hearing that Hayate did it since Miki and the others asked him to do it came as such a disappointment. Deflated, the "magic" was gone, and she turned around asking quietly to return home. However, seeing her reaction, Hayate strongly came on to her and made very clear that he always wanted to do this - since he was always making her angry, always causing her trouble - and that he was very glad to have spent the day together with her.

(Hina wide-eyed)

...and there was one more extremely important thing!! *Hayate dramatically leans into her, holding her hand* *Hina freaks and thinks "Eeeh, what?? Could this be a confession????"

...but nope. I couldn't comprehend this part, but I _think_ he's asking her if she can take care of the ticket fare for the train back.

I mean, the mangaka is really evil

Now, that Hina is back to beating him up, and Hayate still clueless what he missed, the reset is complete. I bet the next chapter will be something entirely different. I don't expect any followup from this. Nevertheless, very fun. And seeing Hina in dere mode was adorable, too!

Hina wasn't the only one, I was literally went "OH SHI-!!!" when Hayate told her the truth. But thankfully, he was able to salvage the situation... What a relief!

It's a chapter like this that makes it sad to think how the ending is gonna turn out. Even though Hina is the favorite candidate among fans, and she HAS gotten many, many good moments with Hayate, the chances of her winning is still low.

First off, Maria is the only one who hasn't heard Hayate's confession of having a girlfriend at a very young age, IIRC. This provokes the odds of it being Maria. And after seeing Maria during high-school, one can't help but feel a connection between the enigma of a childhood love, and herself, showing how it was possible for her to change so much between school and now, gives the possibility the youth could've also gone change to become the Maria of today.

Putting aside Maria, comes Nagi. The whole story was based around Nagi and Hayate. I'm sure the mangaka knew that Hinagiku was gonna be big, and expected a strong fanbase, but to the point that Nagi is being put in the shadow..... I doubt that's going according to plan. Nagi is still in the spotlight here, and I don't think a sudden drop is going to happen. How is it possible to drop her when the story is revolving around her infatuation with Hayate.

And the last person we'll look at here, is HAMSTER!
She has a snowball's chance in August of winning this race, IMO. However, the establishment of the " first girl " is still not ready. She has been the one to have a crush on Hayate for the longest, yet the central character is assumed to be Nagi.

All and all, I doubt Hinagiku will win this, but I'm still rooting for it. I'll still be satisfied with Maria being the winner, but I find it hard to believe theres a way to have Nagi face the truth about how Hayate's relationship with her is more of a brother-sister one.

The last thing I'm gonna talk about is the ending. Will this series end, or is it going to be another School Rumble, where things are being milked to dust? It's sad to see series never reach the final stage, because theres always the stupid moment at the end of a moment that'll ruin all the current progress, *coughtrainticketcough*.

I'm also willing to stake a crudely made vase that the next chapter will be a Nagi one. Anyone care to bet?

I don't think we'll get any "ending" to this show at all, at least anytime soon.

I'd say that Nagi is the clear intended match, look at how massively she's pushed in the anime.

In my opinion the mangaka didn't expect her to become the huge favorite of the fanbase. It's rather that she's a stroke of genius, a big crowd-pleaser. Therefore he can't really axe her. Also, she's the only character which constantly receives long-range story arcs with lasting character development (compared to the weeklies for the other characters, and the fairly random Nagi chapters).

Anyway, a Hina end run is only a pleasant dream. But a dream anyway

I recall reading somewhere that Kenjiro Hata that he wanted the anime to go on "forever" like any self-respecting shounen series.

I wouldn't mind having the manga go on forever, but then again, time actually seems to pass in Hayate, albeit slowly, so we may indeed be moving on a planned trajectory.

Myself, I'm betting that Hayate's long lost brother is Himegami.

For Nagi to grow up so suddenly, and because of 2 closest people betraying her, that'd make her grow up in a wrong way. And no one really thinks of her as just the money snob in this story, since well..... a lot of characters also pack money. The thing is, her character is what we're picking at, and it's not the snobby rich girl that's posing a problem, but the fact she's a human girl that's 13 years old.
