Hayate didn't seem to be too worried, but if you were currently fighting a magic criminal connected to one of the strangest devices you have ever seen, a grumpy admiral wouldn't be much of a problem at all. "I'm a bit busy here, cover it up for me" she replied calmly. "Cover it up?! How could I ever cover something like this up!" "It can't be as hard as that time with the giant transforming robots on Earth. But really, Chrono-kun I think they need my help right now so I shou-" "People on that planet are much easier to fool then people on this one!" Hayate sighed. "You're smart, you'll think something up sooner or later." "I'm sorry Hayate, but you have to take care of this one on you're own. ' She grinned. "Hmm, I'm not sure I like that too much. Press Conference- Next Day "As many of you may have been wondering what happened yesterday, I am here to inform you there was nothing to worry about. It was all just a scheduled.......training exercise. To make sure all our mages were prepared against the most unusual foes, to help protect the public better." Teana turned off the TV in the hospital. "I still can't believe you got him to say that." "Chrono was easy to handle compared to that guy" Hayate replied. "I wonder if Fate-san is going to be okay, she got a direct hit from the tentacle beam" Erio said solemnly. "Oh, I wouldn't worry about her, she spent a good deal of her childhood in Japan, she'll be fine. Teenage Japanese girls have experience with this kind of stuff." Nanoha answered as she entered the room. "I would be more worried about Caro." "At least it's all over now. All's well that ends well, right?" "I didn't think those tentacles were bad" Subaru commented with a smile on her face. Teana groaned. "I didn't want to hear that!" Somewhat inspired by deathcurse's fic, in some strange way. Depending on where your punchline is supposed to be, I personally found that it would have been a good place to end right after that press conference part ^^. Nice humourous short though!

(from the shadows..... shot) Crime Never Sleeps Part 8 Part 1-4A, Part 4B, Part 5: Trial Day 1A, Part 5: Trial Day 1B, Part 5: Trial Day 1C and New Part 6 and New Part 7 Spoiler for Crime Never Sleeps, Part 8: Auris played the recording of last evening’s news tape on her holoscreen, listening to the young woman speaking earnestly as she read her files. A single knock sounded on her door and Hayate let herself in afterwards, coming over and sitting across from Auris with a sigh. “You asked me to come down?” Hayate tilted her head. “I thought we were meeting later tonight, after the trial.” The pressure must be getting to the younger woman—that was about as close to blunt and rude as Auris had ever heard her get. Wordlessly, Auris rotated her screen with a flick of her fingers and hit replay. “Here we have the director of the Cranagan Corrections Program, Ginga Nakajima. Nakajima, can you describe the goals of your program?” “Our facility aims to rehabilitate young offenders so that they can learn how to contribute to our society after their past crimes.” Ginga’s voice came steady and smoothly, her expression determined. “We established the Program after the Scaglietti Incident, and many of our previous youth have continued on to positions in the TSAB military branches or other respectable positions in Cranagan.” “The Cranagan Corrections Program is funded by the city under the direction of the mayor, correct?” “That’s right. Mayor Magnus wished to see our Program continue after the initial Rehabilitation project of the former Numbers, and with his support and the city’s funding, we’ve been able to extend our services to other juvenile detention centres.” “How successful do you believe your program is?” “Statistics don’t really mean much when it comes to giving a misguided child a second chance at bettering their life. But more than seventy-five percent of our kids have managed to find decent jobs since we began our Program.” “Most of those children join the TSAB, correct?” “Yes, the mayor has been a tremendous support in sponsoring our graduates in any further education they may need to join the military. The Saint Church has also supported and sponsored our youth in their studies.” “The TSAB’s budget proposals are due to come out soon, and there are rumours that many social programs in the city will be cut. What are your thoughts on this?” “We’ll hope for the best. I don’t believe that there’s cause to worry, we have many sponsors outside of the TSAB, although we’ll sorely feel their loss if social programs are cut from their budget.” “What effect do you think that the current Gallant trial will have on the TSAB policy towards juvenile criminals? Depending on how the case goes, could the verdict have an impact on your Corrections Program?” Ginga hesitated for a second before replying. “I can’t comment on that. However, I fervently hope that Raven Gallant’s case won’t set a precedent of punitive measures directed towards young offenders. Regardless of the final verdict, the Cranagan Corrections Program will continue its efforts to provide an alternative solution to criminal justice in juvenile offenders. Thank you.” Auris stopped the replay, having watched Hayate’s controlled, mild expression the whole time. The girl was getting good at hiding her thoughts. That just made this whole game that much more tricky, Auris noted. “Ginga’s getting better at public addresses,” Hayate commented with a smile. She leaned back in her seat, lacing her fingers relaxedly over her stomach. “Or was I supposed to pick up on something else?” “Polls in the Cranagan Press jumped in Gallant’s favour after that interview,” Auris informed her. “Cranagan Press is known for its dislike of the military,” Hayate returned, laughing, although Auris detected a small thread of strain in her voice. “It’s why we’ve been sending them the incriminating angle on our case, remember? So people will take it seriously then dismiss it when better evidence comes out the next day from the Daily News.” “One of your more deviously ingenious plans,” admitted Auris as shut down her holoscreens. “Controlling the negative press in a way that supports the positive publicity in the end...But Nakajima’s appeal to the public’s sentimentality is dangerous at this stage. This is a military trial for a civilian criminal, you know we’ve only got a few shots at making the case stick without the public clamouring for an appeal.” Hayate shrugged negligently. “You know our case is pretty solid. What more did you want to do? Bribery?” Oh ho, Auris thought triumphantly at that. So the disapproval from her friends was getting under Hayate’s skin, for the girl to make such a crude comment. Now Auris could start putting some of her own hidden pieces into play to see if she could open those cracks in Hayate’s armour just a little more… “Bribery? How could you suggest that—we have to keep our methods legitimate, in order to prevent an appeal, remember?” She couldn’t help smirking at the irony of their conversation. “Of course,” Hayate yielded that point gracefully, her constant smile reappearing on her face as she regained her composure instantly. “Has Mayor Magnus approached you yet?” Auris asked casually. “Especially since it looks like, despite Nakajima’s political no comment, that if Gallant is convicted they’ll lose support for their Corrections Program—not very good for the reputation of our mayor. His popularity polls are already down in the last year.” “He’s stopped by my office a few times,” replied Hayate, clearly downplaying the number of visits and the intensity of those discussions Auris had eavesdropped on by waving a hand idly. “But we can’t let his personal ego get in the way of justice, can we?” “No,” Auris agreed with an amiable grin as she settled into her seat smugly. So Hayate was juggling multiple games with powerful people…Auris intended to make sure that no matter what, she would end up on top of the resulting mess. “We can’t.” “I’ll see you in court later. Are you sure we should go that route?” “If we don’t, they might,” Auris replied. “I won’t play this trial by re-acting. We’ll be the ones directing where the inquiry goes.” She smiled crookedly, adjusting her glasses. “And how about Testarossa? You said that you know which angle you’ll be taking with her.” A dark flicker passed over Hayate’s expression that she didn’t bother to hide. “Yes, I do.” Auris paused, watching Hayate carefully. “Well then,” she said finally, “I’ll leave it in your hands.” “Yes,” Hayate said, “You will be.” Auris narrowed her eyes once Hayate had turned and exited her office. Getting up, she paced her workspace, polishing the lenses on her glasses broodingly. A statement like that from Hayate? Either the Lt. General was about to crack, or she had more hidden cards than Auris had expected. Interesting. Very interesting indeed. Part 9: Trial Day 2 Spoiler for Crime Never Sleeps, Part 9: Trial Day 2: Gallant Trial, Day Two Expert Witness Testimony #3 Day Two of the Gallant Trial seemed less chaotic than the first day. The number of people in the audience had dropped—this was just the middle day out of three, after all, hardly the same fuss as the first day or the final ruling. Being less of a spectacle, Auris wasn’t surprised to see that the media presence had dropped as well. The remaining stations were likely to be pushing polarizing stories of the Trial, which would only to Hayate and Auris’ advantage. Overinflated media reports made it easy to discredit one source and tip opinion any way they chose. That was the whole purpose of having high profile people in high-commanding roles—the vast connections they brought with them. Of course, a good dash of cunning was always an asset. And that was something that Auris would need to bring out in full today. The young officer Favager rose at Judge Grangaitz’s summon. “Your Honour, we would like to call expert witness Naval Special Intelligence Service Director, Auris Gaiz, to the stand.” Auris stood and walked over to the stand, sitting in the uncomfortable seat and bracing her forearms against the rail. It really was a bit intimidating, to be sitting on this side of the courtroom. Across the room from her, Hayate looked entirely relaxed, a faintly smiling and calm expression on her face; although if Auris looked hard, she could see the strain of the last few days putting a weight on the brunette’s smile. “I swear honourable service to the Time-Space Administration Bureau, and vow to speak nothing but the truth,” she recited. Carina Favager jumped into the interrogation quickly, betraying some of her inexperience. “Director Gaiz, would you say that Officer Keen Touring was a good NSIS agent?” You’re supposed to ham up my credentials, then use that to take advantage of my ego and pride to give you the answers that you want. Auris actually felt kind of sorry for them—Hayate was going to tear their argument into shreds. “Yes.” “Part of his duty was to convincingly act as a Hellhound gang member during his undercover mission?” “Yes.” Favager nodded, pleased. “Would you say that Touring’s talent at subterfuge would have been convincing enough to fool the defendant into truly believing that he was one of the men who murdered her parents?” “Objection.” Hayate stood, her voice soft but clear. “Defence is asking the expert witness to speculate.” “The question asks for the witness’ assessment of her agent’s skill,” countered the other woman. Grangaitz waved a hand. “Over-ruled.” Auris squared her jaw, staring collectedly into Favager’s triumphant gaze. This wasn’t going to be pretty. “Yes. Touring had enough skill to have possibly deceived the defendant.” “What exactly was Agent Touring’s mission on Vaizen?” “He was tasked to gather intelligence on the organized crime on Vaizen.” “How did he intend to complete his mission objectives?” “I cannot answer that,” Auris replied, aware of the thin line she was treading in the perceptions of the jury and crowd. Too evasive, and they looked guilty of hiding something. Too candid, and they might accidentally reveal things that they were hiding. “The TSAB Intelligence Services cannot reveal the details of a mission that is still on-going. It could compromise the safety of our agents.” Favager glanced at Jettal, the two of them deliberating whether or not they should use some strategy between them. Eventually, Favager simply nodded. “No more questions, your Honour.” Hayate got up, her movements unusually lethargic for the normally energetic girl. Auris wondered if she had to start considering how her side plans might accidentally affect Hayate’s performance during the prosecution. It wouldn’t be helpful if Auris ruined her most important plan in her attempt to complete another. But when Hayate spoke, she sounded composed and gently amused like normal. “According to Touring’s report, did all the Hellhounds present at the warehouse participate in the murder of the Gallants?” Auris let out a breath. “No.” Hayate clicked a transcript excerpt from an interview onto the projector. “According to the defendant’s testimony from the police records, she was able to identify enough members of the Hellhounds to know who had killed her parents. This means that she would also have been able to identify who had not done the deed.” To Auris, Hayate asked, “From the case log, did Touring kill the Gallants?” “No.” “Was the defendant able to identify Touring as one of the Hellhounds she knew to have killed her parents?” “No.” “And yet,” Hayate continued, her sweet voice painting a convincing image of the events through words alone, “the defendant murdered Touring and other innocent men along with the real offenders. No one in the warehouse had the opportunity to arm or to defend themselves passively or aggressively. The only weaponry discharged that night was from the machine gun that the defendant had brought with her to the warehouse—none of the victims defended or had an opportunity to defend themselves. This was calculated murder with no mercy.” “Objection!” Favager stood. “No witness testimony speaks to whether or not the TSAB agent and the gang members did or did not retaliate in the firefight.” More slides appeared on the projector, moving along with Hayate’s rebuttal. “Although the defendant has refused to testify as to whether or not Touring and the Hellhounds had fired back in defence, the crime scene evidence shows us that no shell casings other than the defendant’s weapon were present, nor did any of the men’s Storage Devices show signs of use between the hours of 16:00 and 22:00, when the murders occurred. From the body positions of the men—sitting on the couch, at the table playing dice—it is clear that they were taken by surprise.” Hayate sounded almost gentle as she laid out fact after fact, neatly instructing the defence council. As expected, Judge Grangaitz nodded. “Overruled. Continue, Lieutenant-General.” “Director Gaiz, why wasn’t Agent Touring ordered to warn the Gallant family on the day of their murder?” She and Hayate had discussed it before today, and they had decided that if the defence counsel didn’t bring up the question that they would. It was best not to leave any speculations in people’s minds. “Unfortunately, I could not justify such an order. It could have jeopardized his life and his mission.” “Why?” Hayate asked reasonably, raising her hands in a display of puzzlement. “Risked his life from the Hellhounds?” “To some degree, but no.” Auris let the surprise settle through the courtroom before dropping the bomb. “From the Gallant family themselves.” Spoiler for Author's Note: I added a few more lines to Part 8, which will hopefully connect the Trial scenes better to the rest of the story . Her lungs screamed for air and she began to trash about, trying to break free from the darkness that imprisoned her. Her mind started to wake up from its long sleep. Through the unknown liquid she heard a muffled metallic noise and felt the floor beneath her give. She fell onto the floor and coughed violently, trying to clear her throat of the liquid. It splashed onto the floor and flowed into a sewage. After getting most of it out, she spat out mucus remnants with the fluid and licked her lips. Dry as sand, despite having been submerged. Her eyes felt like they were sealed with glue. As she tried to open them a stinging pain took over. She saw nothing but bright light through the thin opening of her eyelids. Another try and she got them open. Immediately the sheering brilliance flooded in, burning them, and she closed them again, then tried to blink the pain away. After a few tries they were almost back to normal and she could take a first cautious glance around. It was as if she was looking through green glasses, but only for her left eye. At every object she looked at, a reticle locked onto it and an ID followed by numbers she couldn’t understand scrolled across the tiny green screen. A stream of information was constantly fed into her head, slowly overwhelming her senses. From the pit of her stomach, nausea began to build, a strange feeling she had rarely experienced before. She closed her eyes, or eye, again. Still supporting herself on all fours she bent her head down and opened her eye, staring down onto the floor. The liquid that still covered the white floor served as a mirror. Although heavily distorted, she could see that something was attached to the left side of her head. Something metallic. She brought a shaking hand up to it and touched it. Sure enough, it was made of metal. It covered her ear all the way to her eye. When her gloved hand drifted over her left eye, the image shifted to light blue. The bones in her hand became visible. Surprised, she shook her head and the green tint was back again, the glove looking normal. “What the... hell?” she croaked. She managed to stand up, albeit on shaky legs, and looked down on her body. A dark blue suit covered her from neck to foot, with heavy boots on her feet and thick gloves on her hands. It was tight, but not so much that it became uncomfortable. Still, there was an ache in her whole body that refused to go away. She took a step forward and promptly fell on her face. Pain was distant, but she immediately noticed that her right leg was the cause. She banged it once on the floor while she was still lying down. A mechanical clank vibrated in the floor. She tapped it with her hand and felt solid steel. She didn’t know what to to feel or even think about it. The situation was alien to her and she took a look around again. She was in some kind of lab, judging from the mass of screens and snow white interior. No other people were there with her, nor were there any heavy equipment. Behind her stood the tall pod she had fallen out of. Liquid was still dripping from its interior and the thick cables inside it hanged with nothing to attach to. As far as she could determine, there was no exit. She managed to get up, taking careful steps, and banged on the walls, feeling solid material behind them. She repeated the process around the room until she completed a full circle. Her mind was still bogged down. Memories began to surface and she remembered what had happened before she’d been knocked out in her base. Everything in-between, though, was a blank. “Can anyone hear me?” she asked into thin air. She held her voice steady, refusing to let herself be rattled by the surreality. She was the Blood Maiden after all. She would not turn into a shaking wreck for something like this. One of the screens sprung to life, hissing with static. Slowly an image began to form, until it eventually showed herself being surveyed. She flung her head around and looked at the corner where the camera should be. There was nothing there. “I hear you, Wallachia.” The distorted voice came from seemingly nowhere, but she understood after a couple of seconds that it came from the device attached to her head. She replied, figuring it had an in-built microphone; “Who are you?” “A voice you’ll have to trust. Look in the corner to your right. There’s a pad on the floor. Step onto it.” Wallachia checked and found it, but she didn’t approach it. Instead, she asked; “Why?” “It’s an exit. A teleporter.” Wallachia stood where she was, eyeing the pad. Eventually she approached it. Without hesitating she stepped onto it. She wanted to know the coward who was giving her orders. Besides, she didn’t want to be stuck in there forever. Even she could see the impossibility of escaping any other way. A tingling sensation flowed in a wave over her skin. In a fraction of a second she ceased to exist and then materialized again in another location. White static played across her natural eye before it began to settle. The green screen took a while to restart itself, but eventually became normal as well. The new room was also bright and void of furniture. The only thing it contained was a desk with a monitor on it. In front of it, facing Wallachia, sat a blonde woman with her legs crossed. She had her hands clasped in her lap. A smile went up on her face when Wallachia noticed her. “You don’t seem to be that cowardly after all,” Wallachia said as she stepped out of the teleporter. She didn’t lose a step this time and continued to march towards the woman, feeling the urge to punch her. “Oh I’m not a coward, my dear Wallachia. I’d argue quite the opposite, in fact.” “Really? So you won’t scream when I rip out your lungs? You won’t try to flee when I destroy that smiling face of yours with my bare hands?” “Not at all.” “Hmph.” By now Wallachia was only two meters away. The woman still sat with her legs crossed and her smile widened. The gesture only urged Wallachia on and made her grin in response. The woman had genuinely surprised her. She was so different from everyone else Wallachia had ever come across. She finally lunged, reaching out to grab the woman by the neck. Then the target sprung to action. The woman dodged the lunge, still sitting on her chair, and grabbed hold of Wallachia’s arm. She spun her around and forced her to sit in her lap. She then wrapped her legs around Wallachia’s and immobilized her, dragging the arm up behind her back until she felt like it would break. The woman’s other arm went around Wallachia’s waist and extended three metallic claws that came to rest inches from her throat. “You aren’t used to that body yet,” she whispered into Wallachia’s right ear. “You don’t have the upper hand here. I do.” She put some pressure on the arm bent behind Wallachia’s back. She grunted in pain and mentally prepared herself to break it. If she could get loose, she had a chance of an attack. “A little bird whispered in my ear that you liked blood. Is that true?” “I don’t like blood,” Wallachia said through gritted teeth. “I love it.” “Is that so~” The woman let her claw go past Wallachia’s face and scratched on her own, drawing a little bit of blood from her cheek. “Then show it to me. You haven’t had this in a long while, haven’t you?” She brought the claw back close to Wallachia’s nose. A tremble went through her body as the scent rustled her dormant beastly senses. “You asked who I was before, didn’t you? Now that I’ve got your attention, I think I can tell you.” She brought the claw closer so that Wallachia could almost lick the blood off. “My name is Due, an operative of Erebus. I don’t actually exist anymore, since I was killed. And so were you, my dear.” Wallachia didn’t really process what this Due was saying, as she was completely focused on the drip of blood. She’d never been without it for more than a week. To suddenly be exposed to it after what felt like an eternity brought her mind to a stand-still. “Erebus rebuilt us to fight for them. I’m thankful for what they did. You, I don’t know yet.” She let the blooded blade touch Wallachia’s lips. She responded by licking the blade to try and get it all. Just from that small amount, a warm feeling began to manifest in her body. It’s... delicious. This taste... “That’s a good girl,” Due said and released her hold just a bit. Wallachia didn’t try to flee and remained dormant, licking the blade. “In one way, I’m your supervisor. We’ll work together to do what Erebus tells us to. Can I trust you to help me? There will be rewards.” For a moment Wallachia seemed to gather her senses again and became aware of what was going on. Still, while her mind processed what had been said, she didn’t flee. She stopped licking the blade and asked with a curious tone; “Rewards?” “Mindless slaughter. As much blood as you can consume. Flesh to gorge yourself upon. If you can take orders from me, and ultimately Erebus, no one will get in your way.” A devilish grin went up on her face. “Really?” “Yes.” Wallachia thoughts went into overdrive for the possibilities that had presented themselves. If what Due was saying was true, that she had been revived by Erebus, and that she would get to basically do what she wanted either way... She had no problem with it. “I can take orders. But on one more condition.” “And that is?” “Your blood. It’s the best I’ve tasted in years.” Due smiled and dug deeper into the shallow wound, letting blood trickle down her blade. Wallachia leaned in and licked it off. Her saliva made the blade shine in the bright light as she moved up and down, not paying attention to her own tongue getting cut on the steel. “Due, you’re getting soft. I don’t remember getting this sort of treatment when I first came here.” The digitalized male voice came from above them. Wallachia was too absorbed trying to lick the blood to notice him. Due rolled her eyes. “Enjoying yourself?” He fell down from the ceiling and landed without a sound. He was wearing a suit similar to their own, only that his was black. His face couldn’t be seen either. There was just a black plate where his face should have been. The carvings of two optical orbs could scarcely be made out in the bright light. “No, not really. I’m just restless.” He nodded at Wallachia. “You have her wrapped around your finger I see. Just look how she smears herself all over you.” Wallacia was aware of his presence now, but since he didn’t seem to be an enemy, she was relaxed. The corner of her mouth went up a bit. Curiosity prodded her. “And who are you?” “You can call me Xenon, and as with you, Due is my superior.” “Xenon is on our team. The final piece,” Due said. The fact that they couldn’t see his expression unnerved Wallachia. The two optical orbs were horrible to look at even for her. It didn’t help that his voice was like an A.I’s; digital and distorted. Not that different from her past companion, she realized. “I specialize in espionage, infiltration and sabotage. One moment I’m there. The next, I’m not,” Xenon said. He nodded at Due. ”I’ve been working for a while with Due. I think you can learn a whole lot from her.” Before Wallachia could ask anymore questions, Xenon was gone in an eyeblink. How he’d disappeared right in front of her she had no idea. Surprised, she scoured the room only to find no trace of him. “He does that all the time, the little show-off,” Due said. “Still, he’s very good at what he does. He’s saved me more times than I can count ever since we got paired up.” She fell silent and Wallachia got up from her lap. She stood before Due and rose her hands to the roof, imagining a sky with a sun shining down on her. A huge grin was on her face. “I died once before. Then my companion saved me. I died again. Then Erebus saved me.” Her hands formed into fists as she brought them down by her side. “I could never imagine I’d live to slaughter again. To taste flesh and to drink blood again. To really live again... It’s wonderful!” She laughed. A terrifying laugh her throat had been unable to utter for months. __________________

Spoiler for MD Again: Sette had to admit to herself that for someone chewing on a chicken patty in a confined kitchen, the female intruder managed to defend herself adequately against her initial attempt to keep her locked down. At the moment, the Combat Cyborg had the upper hand and was able to at least limit her opponent’s movements by getting behind and locking the arms and legs with her own. But she didn’t seem to react… at least in an expected manner. Sette thought that she would have struggled to get free from her grip but instead, she struggled to get back to the container containing those chicken patties. “Um… shouldn’t you be getting out of this hold first, Ma’am?” asked the device. “Chicken patties await!” growled that strange blue haired woman as she inched closer. ‘… she certainly has strange priorities.’ Nonetheless, this was an opportunity. “Doctor, can you call in security?” Miura managed to pull out a communications device from the unconscious body of Garn but saw that it wasn’t functioning properly. “No can do. Her com radio’s fried and I’m sure I drained the battery on my own radio.” “What about… telepathy?” grunted Sette as the other woman started to close her gloved hand around the box. “I’m a doctor, not a mage!” Unknown to him, it was a somewhat poor choice of words on his part as the intruder suddenly reacted to his statement. “McCoy Moment!” With a surge of strength, the blue haired woman managed to throw off the Combat Cyborg right into the dish rack where pieces of cutlery were still drying out in the air, causing them to fly everywhere. But it didn’t stop her from slowly approaching the doctor as he blindly scrambled for something to protect him and the guard. “Stay back! Or prepare to taste the wrath of my…” His hands closed around something and he whipped it out, hoping it would be the device that had been carried by Garn but instead… “… butter knife?” She just merely giggled. “Hehehehehe! What next? You gonna use the Force… er, forks?” “…… maybe.” Not a dignified answer but considering what happened a second ago, he may as well try to roll with the flow. Maybe he could get everyone out of this particular mess without having any bloodshed if she got easily amused. “Now if we’re going to get another McCoy Moment, then I have to finish her off! Then you can check on her and say ‘She’s Dead, Jim’. The only problem is who’s gonna be Jim? I can’t do it so I guess it’ll fall to…” The blue haired woman paused for a moment before pointing dramatically to Sette, who had shook off the earlier disorientation. “… you! Your name is now Jim!” “Incorrect. My designation is Sette. It has not been and will never be ‘Jim’,” replied the Combat Cyborg in a tone that bordered on irritation but not quite. “Identify yourself.” The disappointment of not having a Jim quickly vanished as the crazy female mage began her speech. “I am the terror that flaps in the night! I am the flatulence that you get from eating one too many chicken burritos! I am Material-L… but you can just call me Rai-chan!” “Rai-chan? I didn’t expect someone like her to have such a simple name,” mumbled Miura as she quickly moved to chow down the last chicken patty in the container. “And I didn’t expect that she would be intelligent enough to use a term like flatulence.” “For someone who sounds like Kevin J. England, that was awfully snarky of you, Vulnificus,” said Rai to her device. “…… who’s Kevin J. England?” “That’s the question! Nobody knows who the guy is aside for having 15 minutes of fame in some anime production! I totally bet that he’s a big retard or plays a retarded role!” She whirled towards the Combat Cyborg. “What do you think, Sette-chan?” “What is your purpose here?” demanded Sette, ignoring the question just fired her way. “And why do you bear such a resemblance to Testarossa?” “…… Testarossa? What do you know of that name?” The tone used by the Lightning Assailant just now was a complete switch from her earlier goofy antics. And her red eyes held a rather unnerving glint which disturbed Miura. ‘What is this? She mentioned that name and… all of a sudden…’ Before Rai could approach the Combat Cyborg, she heard a familiar royal voice echo in her mind. “Material-L, respond!” “Yami-chan?” “Call me ‘Your Majesty’!” replied the irritated telepathic tone of Material-D. “You haven’t checked in for a while! What are you doing? Do you have everything yet?” “Ah, no… actually I finally found a fridge to raid from so that should solve the food thing but no luck on the map! Oh… and that teleport spell you gave me? It fell apart like a Jenga tower!” “That’s because you probably burned out the core matrix by using it too often!” growled the Lord of Darkness. “Whatever… just get back to the ship as soon as possible with what you have. Those cloaked objects orbiting that world are starting to act funny. It’s best if we leave quickly.” “Aye-aye!” The telepathic connection was broken before Rai moved towards the fridge. “Vulnificus, Sealing Mode.” It didn’t take long for the device to figure out what exactly she was doing. “Oh, you have got to be kidding me. You’re sealing a bloody fridge.” “Yes. Now get to it!” One second later and the fridge vanished from their sights. “Now only one more thing… Sette-chan, you’re coming with me!” “…… what?” said the Combat Cyborg in a flat tone. “Yep, yep! After all, you said that magical word back there, meaning you know some stuff about her. I really want to hear about it which is why I want you to come with me. Besides… you know that you’re wasting away here in this place.” Sette frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?” “Your manner of speech, the calculating look in your eyes as you went through every single possible scenario that you could conceive to meet victory conditions… you’re a soldier, Sette-chan. Like Heero and Sosuke and probably half a billion other characters that are out there. Right now, you’re without a mission. Your body language practically screams it out loud regardless of how well you may try to hide it.” The Lightning Assailant held out her hand. “I can give you a mission objective and it won’t be a one shot deal. It’ll probably be a mission that will last a life time as it deals with something that has vast influence in this universe. It’s bigger than you can imagine, Sette-chan. Bigger than the Bureau and Ancient Belka…” ‘What could she be talking about? Is this a trick?’ She wasn’t sure what the Fate replica was up to. “I need more information concerning the details of your mission.” “There’s no time to tell the whole story now! I have a ship out there waiting for me and we’re going to be leaving soon. If you want to find out what I’m talking about, then come with me.” “W-wait a second!” protested Miura. “Sette, please think about what she’s offering! I don’t know what type of life mission she’s talking about but I can’t guarantee that it will be as you expected!” “And what if I refuse to go with you, Material-L?” responded Sette. Rai merely shrugged. “Your choice I guess. I won’t be too happy about it though meaning that when I make my way outta here, I’ll be frying every single person I meet on the way out. Guards, prisoners… you name it!” “Is that so…?” She carefully weighed her options. On the one hand, she could stay and try to continue her treatment although there was a chance that the transfer order could still go through later in the future and increase the odds of dying a meaningless death. Not to mention that at the present, Material-L would most certainly not hesitate to use extreme force on anyone she saw while making her escape. It appeared that she had only one option if she wanted to prevent any unnecessary deaths. “Very well… I shall accompany you. On the condition that you do not kill anyone else while in this facility.” “Sure, whatever! As long as I got my new sidekick with me!” cheered Material-L happily before she grabbed the Combat Cyborg’s arm to drag her along. “Sette!” Miura wanted to move but his body didn’t seem to respond, most likely because of exhaustion from working such a long day. “I shall be fine, Doctor.
