I find it hilarious that the original Robocop with quarter of a century old special effects did a better job at conveying that Murphy had been turned into a robot/cyborg than this state of the art stuff. The state of the art stuff makes him just look like a regular person in a suit.
Oh sure. They'll use CGI to make him zip around at high speeds and jump 20 feet. But audiences are so used to seeing people doing that in movies now a days that nobody is going to register that as being particularly machine like.

As opposed to the ED209. It looks more like a giant robotic chicken with twin autocannons; makes it look like cuckold.

The whole point of creating Robocop in the original was because Detroit (or society) had broken down and become so out of control and violent (evident in the film) that having an invincible law enforcer was necessary which isn't the vibe the new movie gives at all.
The trailer just screams "safe and tame" to suit younger and wider audiences, probably so they can flog toys and merchandise.

With the 2008 crisis, it became worse. Hollywood is just looking to make money out of the headlines.

I believe the Robocop you see in the current dvds/blurays releases like the Criterion Collections were the initially rated X (for excessive violence).
In fact R rated movies I say are pretty tame in comparison to the 70s and 80s. It also goes back to my particular preference to practical effects due to the realism they present over digital. Murphy's execution scene vs this car bomb in the new one is a perfect contrast to that. |

Really
But it might be due to the fact that I watched all the Robocop movies on TV... But even so, I don't think I quite register "ventilating" someone as an adult thing... Ahh the child's mind...

5 Signs the New 'RoboCop' Movie Might Be Terrible:
"RoboCop was the finest movie, where the title was also the entire concept, the script, and all the advertising you'd ever need. Anyone who isn't excited by that concept isn't going to be motivated by posters, trailers, or 10,000 volts through their dead joyless heart. RoboCop is such a classic of science fiction, it proves that Isaac Asimov got the three laws of robotics wrong. RoboCop is the story of a noble hero destroyed by scumbag villains and resurrected with the power of modern technology, where the villains are the people behind RoboCop 3 and the technology is Hollywood remakes. This is the first reboot I've been fully behind, as any attempt to create a universe where RoboCop 3 never happened has my full support. But the recent trailer has given me cause to worry. And any world where a human has to worry about RoboCop has gone badly wrong." See: http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-signs-...t-be-terrible/ |

Facepalm.....
The POINT of Robocop is that it's a tragedy about loss and isolation. Alex Murphy is deprived of his body, family, even his own memories; he is a prisoner trapped unwillingly inside a body and new life that is not his own nor his to control. He is literally left with less than nothing. By giving him access to his memories and his family after his amalgamation, this movie has become as tragic as getting hit by a bus and coming back with a cast on your arm.
