I believe, the reason Kakashi surprised was because Kakuzu was able to use all those elements at its highest potential (or close to that level), as if he has (close) affinity with all of them. Otherwise, it wouldn't be that strange as all/most Kage level people should be able to use 5 of them.

It is still debatable, and will stay so, cause we will not be given any more information on that. You can either use Chiyo's suggestion to claim that Sasori didn't want to continue, hence, decided to die at the end, or you can use Sasori's previous comments and actions, and claim that he unintentionally hesitated for a short time, and that gave the opening Chiyo needed...Choose wisely, as you might need to defend it against counter arguments...

I don't know whether he can or cannot use wind elemental, but, how he performed against Kakuzu cannot be a measure for that. Even if Kakashi can use wind, he may not be able perform as well as he can with his lightning jutsu. So, you can also assume, instead of risking with other type of elemental jutsus, he just used what he is best at to cancel the effect.

Thing is though, Kazuku is the ONLY ninja we have seen use more than 3 elements... if i recall, the third hokage and Jiraiya have only been seen using earth and fire, and some kage level ninjas rely mostly on non-elemental techniques... even other members of akatsuki have not shown an affinity for more then like 2 elements. Thus far, even amognst the kage level ninjas no one has shown even a weak affinty for all of the elements.

Well, the 3rd Hokage was called the Professor and was supposed to know all the jutsus of the village, so I think he mastered all the elements.

I also think the 5 element seal, like its name suggests, requires the 5 elements to work.

As indicated by one of the posters above, 5-element seal can be considered as borrowing power from all the elementals. And, as also indicated by Jiraiya, this is something possible only for very high level ninjas (kage level people), which matches the criteria of using elementals...

In the first part, it was around 1.8 chapters per episode(I believe, that is excluding the fillers). Now, it is much less than that (lower 1.x) because of the fillers (that cannot be anymore excluded from the count as they are integrated with the manga parts within the episode). So, if the anime continues this way, you should read the manga unless you wanna suffer more with each passing (or non-passing) episode...

The manga is a little less than 100 chapters ahead, lately the anime covers only 1 chapter worth per episode (sometime a little more, sometime a little less like this week). At this rate the anime will reach the current point of the manga in a couple of years.
Since they might add new filler arcs it could be longer than that.

Since Hunter gave a specific number (by taking the current chapter as the target point), let me add on to that, by giving numbers on when the anime may catch up with the manga (in other words, when you will be up to date compared to the manga). With a typical Naruto-original series pacing (1.8 ch/ep), it would take around 2.5 years to catch up with the manga. If you lower that pace to 1.4 ch/ep (midpoint of the current pace 1 and the typical pace of 1.8) on average for the Shippuuden, it would take around 4.5 years to catch up with the manga. (I don't even want to imagine the case of the current pacing becoming the standard for the Shippuuden.)

Hopefully at some point they will do a series of double episodes which will take away anywhere from 5 - 10 chapter and resume to use about 2 -3 chapters per ep because they rate which you mention is insane

Considering the amount of fillers they are currently integrating with the main story by giving a lot of unnecessary details on some people's past, it is really difficult to avoid any similar type of fillers in the future, especially since the fights will generally involve people like Sasori (more unnecessary details on those people's past, who knows they may even join with some of the fillers from the first part the added parts, if they run out of ideas - that is if they have any kind of idea at all).

Anyways...I have no doubt that the current arc will proceed this way. If they increase the pacing the previous episodes will definitely look trash, or let's say more trashy, and I doubt the anime creators will want to do that (though at this point it is hard to make guess on the way they "think").

And, the arc after this one is more open to fillers than the current one. So, I also lost my hope on that one too. It will present more emotional aspects related to Naruto, and Sakura. With the introduction of Yamato, more fillers on his past is expected to come.

Then, it will be training and Akatsuki hunt arc. Again, in this part, they can extend the training sessions and Akatsuki search as much as they like. Well, since it is unlikely to happen within the next one year period, no need to worry on that much, at this time...

Basically, it is because he does not have a desire to take risks unless it is really necessary. He doesn't mind to show off, he trusts his abilities, but, when it comes to take risks, he cannot really do that unless necessary. Still, how you want to interpret that kind of move completely depends on how you view him or his character...
