Gankutsuou (Count of Monte Cristo), Classical to Sci-Fi
Well this time it's the Count of Monte Cristo, set in far future (as expected from GONZO?) so it's more like "Count of Monte Cristo in Space" The interesting twist here is that the male lead seems to be the son of the fiancee of the Count, ie. the target of the Count's revenge, which could lead to some interesting story development.
Very unique and stylish character designs IMO. For anyone wondering about the title Gankutsuou, it's the japanese name of the Count of Monte Cristo novel. This new series is supposed to start airing in July. Last edited by dreamless; 2004-09-25 at 23:52. |

just got a preview trailer, all I have to say is WOW! And WOW! And WOW again! The trailer really rocks! And it's not the usual 3D CG stuff from GONZO, but very stylish art and great visual effects, looks better than the Samurai 7 trailer by far IMO.

I am astonished!!!
Mahiro Maeda is the director?? Words of Showji Murahama. Mahiro Maeda is directing the next animation after SAMURAI 7. This work pursues distinctive video beauty and a pilot was completed at the end of the last year. It's quite something and is really a cut above. I was amazed. http://www.gonzo.co.jp/gd/english/news/040101.html |

DAMN! That looks amazing! The style! The colors! The patterns! I've wanted an anime with an inventive look like this for SO LONG. (And by inventive look, I don't mean pretty character designs.)
I was freaking out after you said "in the future" (like oh not more superficial "sci-fi=cool" crap) but now I'm truly amazed. Okay, now I must hold back my over-enthusiasm for the visual style, and pray to god the story department pulls through. Please GONZO! Go deep with this one! And now I must finally finish reading the Count of Monte Cristo. EDIT- I can't remember the name of the art movement that the style reminds me of...Art Nouveau? I'm thinking French poster prints. |

well, just wondering if anyone is doing this preview trailer? If no one is doing it maybe I'll make a subbed version myself, since there's only very few japanese in the trailer and I think I can translate them no problem, however I guess the styling and type setting won't be good as I haven't done any stuff like that before...

Go for it. ^_~ I'm very interested in seeing this trailer, and the character designs just look freaking awesome (albeit slightly flat, if that makes any sense). GONZO has finally started to win back my affection.
Nice banner, BTW. |

well I have put the translated sub in a text file and kinda wondering what's the next step from here?
I've loaded the sub with vobsub and this is what it looks like right now Spoiler:
It looks quite ugly I guess, so what should I do next? my prior experience with subbing so far is only at making an srt file... |

Thank you for the trailer! It looks so beautiful! Its as if they are using screentones to get that effect where an object/person moves, but the background pattern and coloring are stationary. But of course, this is GONZO and its all digital.
I'm in love with this art direction. Its bordering on experimental and arthouse. To think Mahiro Maeda would try to popularize a style like this! I think he's succeding. I'm also reminded of Final Fantasy Unlimited's look and characters, but taken to an extreme and jazzed up with psychadelic flares and steampunk style. The only thing that made me recoil were those snippets of mecha. NO! You don't need mecha in this story! Why?! Why?! I hope they keep the mecha out. What is it with the anime's fascination with mecha?! Sure they're cool if the story needs it, but it IS possible to tell a good sci-fi story without mecha!!! Besides, the Count of Monte Cristo is soooo much cooler with sword fights! I want sword fights! Not CG robots! |

well, seems there are sword fights, gunfights, mecha fights, and mecha sword fights... I'm not a fan of mecha, and I'm more excited to see the Count flinging his sword around, but I have to say even the mecha in the preview looks quite nice and smooth instead of gonzo's usual blocky robots...
seems not too many people interested in the trailer? |

well, I started a thread some time before by the name Gankutuou... guess I missed an "s"
http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=15749 unfortunately the tracker for the bt download of the trailer is down I think maybe someone can merge the threads? EDIT: oh, just visited the official site http://www.gankutsuou.com/index.html definitely one of the coolest, if not THE coolest anime official site ever! Ah, so this is the thread for the Japanese "Count of Monte Cristo" anime. Hmm. It does look very promising. I'm kinda bumed that they didn't stick closely to the book, but then again, sometimes rethinking stuff is good too. We'll see. hehe.

I suppose they do want to make something different - no point making the same thing again, eh?
I still don't really like Gonzo - but this really does look wonderful, and I hope it isn't hollow in the story department. Last Exile looked so wonderful but it failed to impress me otherwise... By teh way, Music is done by Jean Jacques Burnel from The Stranglers, an UK punk band that has lived right on even from the 1970s and is still alive. Interesting!

Gonzo doesn't really have the greatest track record in my eyes, especially because they enjoy making awful manga adaptations. They're usually good for the first few episodes, until Gonzo makes up its own story and it sucks. I really enjoyed Last Exile and Final Fantasy Unlimited, though, and this series looks beautiful. I wonder what they're going to do with it.
