The Daughter of the Coal Mine
It's one of those odd coincidences that I watched this some hours after watching a DVD of the Pelly production of La Fille du Régiment (The Daughter of the Regiment). I can't help feeling that someone on the staff of this anime has seen that production too. For those unfamiliar with the opera, Marie, the eponymous daughter, was found lost on a battlefield and brought up by the 21st regiment. She grows up to be an energetic and hard-working tomboy who regards all the soldiers of the regiment as her fathers and earns her keep by doing the cooking and laundry. The poster at the following link gives some idea of her personality as portrayed by Natalie Dessay.
http://www.villagetheatre.ca/Show/64.aspx As for the show itself, the first episode I found terribly generic and lacking in entertainment value, the only reasons I didn't drop it were; I've felt this way before about shows that later became favourites; and dragons. I don't think this one is going to become a favourite but it has become entertaining enough to follow. On the dragon side of things I'd prefer it if the girls transformed fully into dragons, the half-way state doesn't look right. Their tails are too big for their bodies. I'm quite intrigued by the biology of these creatures, I'm presuming they are endothermic by their observed activity levels and food intake. Their reproductive biology is somewhat mysterious. I'd like to see one of the males naked. Do they have scales? Do they possess external genitalia? Do the females give birth to live young or do they lay eggs? They have swellings that resemble mammary glands. Do they lactate? If so how do the infants receive the milk? So many questions! Has anyone deciphered the dragon script as seen in the credits yet? It seems to be a simple substitution alphabet for romaji. |

Leviatan 05 - Romance! Vacation! Mistaken Identity!
Syrup may be on the recieving end of a lot of jokes, but Bahamut's luck in the show so far hasn't been all that good. In the end, I don't think she minded that Levi came along on her vacation. It might've gotten lonely otherwise. The girl with the flattest chest is the one who gets stripped - that doesn't happen super often. And Jorm log-surfing was pretty cool. No monster fighting this week, just a lot of hijinks, but the end does hint that something bigger is going to happen next week. If nothing else, the show's got a nice, peaceful atmosphere going for it. Freaky bugs notwithstanding. |

Hmm... an unidentified interloper gives Levi magic advice.
We're nearly halfway through, and the girls have yet to even recognize that there's truly a threat to their world. I wonder if there will be any serious plot part of this series at all.

I guess Leviathan finally found the place she dreamed about. I wonder what the connection is between that place and her brother. Also, we got (more or less) introduced to a new character. He'll probably become important later on.

Leviatan 06 - Wild Dragon Chase
The padding with the transformation sequences was a little obvious, but I didn't totally mind. There was that song that played with it. Not "Blast of Fate" level, but it was a nice sounding song. I was thinking that mysterious kid might be Levi's brother de-aged or something, but the way he has that spear in the end and the fact that he's leading them on a snipe hunt suggests otherwise. I have a fairly good idea of whom he might be, but even then it's not much of an idea. Even with the fight against the insects, the series is maintaining a fairly leisurely pace. Poor Bahamut - cried wolf so many times that nobody believes her now. Also, a character song album has been announced for this series. I just wanted to mention that because it's my thing. |
