Darkoogle's (black Version Google) Theory!
If that is true, then thats a lot of energy we can save by using it. http://www.darkoogle.com - Default http://www.darkoogle.com/darker - Darker version DARKOOGLE'S (BLACK GOOGLE) Theory: "A typical white screen uses around 74 watts of electricity. A blackversion of the same screen uses around 59 watts - so saving around 15watts per hour. "A saving of 15 watts isn't huge on it's own - you couldn't even run a household lightbulb with it." "However, Google gets around 200 million hits a day. Multiply ourmodest 15 watt saving by 200 million and things start to getinteresting." "The idea was first suggested in a blog entry in January whichestimated that a "black Google" could save 750 megawatt-hours a year." "To save the most energy, it is advisable to set your browser'shomepage to Darkoogle and email friends and family about it so they canall help together to save energy." |

Hmm, that's pretty interesting. I don't really know much about saving energy other than closing the fridge and turning unused lights off, but I doubt this is going to work. The problem is... I think most people prefer to look at a white screen than a black one.

Interesting prospect, but it's hurting my eyes. I don't know how many kilo-whatnot-hours it needs to save to make up for all the eyesight bills it would cause.
I'm against white fonts on black backgrounds. (except for terminal fonts on a command line)

Black screen is easier on my eyes, too. I frequent another messageboard that has a black background with yellow text, and everyone loves it. It was white for a while and there was nearly a crisis.
How many people actually look at Google's main site long enough for it to actually hurt their eyes?

hmm...I actually kind of like this. I actually prefer a darker UI. I find it much easier to focus on. I try to make my OS as dark as possible already because I find white hard to focus on.
I'm actually using the Darkoogle "Darker" theme for my homepage. Much better than the Green on Black.

It's pretty much a myth unless you have a CRT monitor. Most LCD monitors use just as much energy, or more, for a black screen:
