Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Some people can't play Skyrim via Steam right now, and I'm one of them. The solution is to uninstall and reinstall, apparently (judging by what I read in a forum thread). What should I do? First, back up the data folder (for the mods) and also back up my game saves, just in case? I'm on Windows 7, is this pretty straight forward? Just right click, copy the folders, and save to an SD card and I'm good to go?

Also, is it pretty easy to reinstall the game on Steam? I never did a reinstall of a game on steam before. Is it also really straight forward to uninstall and reinstall the game on steam? Should I be able to find help on that in the read me file for Skyrim?

I'm trying to figure this out soon. I wanna play the game.

Its "easy" but Steam's little problem is going to cost the affected quite a few gigabytes of data transfer. It really annoys me when companies think a couple of gigabyte downloads are "no problem' for their customers, many of whom operate under monthly data caps.

And yeah, copy-save those game saves... and if you've installed any mods, make a note of those / save them off, etc.

edit: hmmm, my patch seems to have gone okay but checking out the mods now.

Alright, thanks guys. Now about what I quoted, when you say save them off, you mean save the save files when all my mods are disabled?

Oh yes, another question. How do I go about deleting old Skyrim saves? I have about 400 saves (lol) and I was surprised to find my save folder at 2.28 GB. I don't know if the proper, safe way to do this is to just go into the save files folder and delete old saves or what.

Your saves should be fine even after the 1.4 update. I tend to overwrite old saves on occasion, alongside a few autosaves.
Whilst you can simply delete the older save files from the folder (this will be the quicker method, as you can batch delete old save files), it's probably safer to go into the game itself, select a save file in the appropriate "save" and/or "load" menu, then pressing "X" on your keyboard to delete (you'll be prompted before deleting). As I just said though, this is the safer option, and considering you have about 400 saves, it's best if you just go and delete them using Windows Explorer.

Question! I finished the Battle for Windhelm siding with the Imperials. After that, the city is like a ghost town with barely people...how do you make the people come back? Also, is there a way to get rid of those blood and altar with bones on Hjerim? I purchased and remodelled the house and the mess is still there (I reloaded my old save).

Cyz: You have to wait a day or two after the battle of Windhelm, after which the city reverts to normal, except with a new Jarl and town guards. Also you USUALLY can get the option to have Hjerim cleaned up, but that's only if you finished Blood on the Ice properly. Getting Hjerim with the console won't give you the option to have the place cleaned up first in my experience.

Ah thanks! It's quite disturbing seeing all those "garbage" after buying and renovating the house. Not very nice especially if you're spending more than 12,000 gold.

The Steam Workshop for Skyrim is now open, allowing you to easily install and manage mods for the game. To do so, you first need to add a "subscription" to a mod, and the game will automatically download and update said mod whenever you launch the game. Here's a Skyrim mod by Valve, which adds the Space Core from Portal 2 into the game. You can make your own mods using the Creation Kit (Wiki here).

And finally, the High Resolution Texture Pack is now available (for free). It's about a 3.1GB download. Has anyone tried it out yet? I really haven't noticed a big difference.

Playing on 360... though once the good mods start coming out I'm so getting Skyrim on PC Hope the high res mod looks great, since I finally got a good PC monitor now unlike the 10 year old thing I had last month.

Anyways in my lame hope of a DLC announcement (trailer) would be the surprise today (hey, I have it on 360 so a creation kit and high res doesn't effect me) I started compiling a wishlist of what I wanted in my Skyrim DLC... and wasted a lot of time typing it and now felt like sharing.

Let me talk about the white elephant in the room first though

Spoiler for The Desire of Multiplayer by many:

MULTIPLAYER WOULD JUST NEVER WORK IN A VERSUS CAPACITY... simply put Stealth would be useless since any player who turned up the brightness level could see any opponent in front of him no matter how great the skill level (the skill was built to be used against AI not humans and would require major game rebalancing, probably from the ground up).

Co-op maybe could work on the other hand (did I say maybe) but only if you too are allies (so both players must side on the same side in the civil wars quests for example), but if true to the plot line the second player couldn't be the dragon born (which wouldn't be fun). However it would be nice to be able to control the companion. For old school feel, I'd prefer it only work split screen or LAN since that way your are with your friend and experiencing the same events from the same room (me and my bro used to take hour long turns playing Morrowind trying to outstage the other or find the better gear first, it was an amazing experience that can't be replicated via voice chat and made Morrowind that much of a better game since a please shared is a pleasure doubled) but would begrudgingly understand xbox live, ps3 network, stream, etc... after all this is the 21st century and voice chat is decent enough (and being in my mid 20s now would sound kinda foolish to go over to a friends house to play a skyrim when I could do it from home too).

Now here is what I would want expansion wise:

Quick sum up: 3 DLCs being (Morrowind for the first, Cyrodill for the second, and Valenwood & Summerset Isles for the 3rd and final DLC). However unlike other Bethesda DLC I want these perefed play style to be played in order as much as where possible. Though workable other ways too, so if you do DLC 3 first and beat it, DLC 2 will happen due to agents from 3 already in place wanting revenge instead of people under the working for the enemies in DLC currently, so there final attack will be more since we went out we're taking you with use rather than just manipulating events to prevent your attack on them.

Spoiler for My desired DLC 1: Morrowind:

I'd want Morrowind first since I think that is the natural area the Thalmor would manipulate to cause trouble for the Empire and Syrim as a whole regardless of who you sided with in the Civil War quest line. Simply put the Dark Elves have a long history of war with the Nords so now that the Civil War is, presumably, a greater influx of Dark Elf refuges from Morrowind to Skyrim would ignite the passions of both groups and cause new strife in the area. Thus if the Empire won the Civil War then they now have to deal with the possibility of a new Civil War erupting but on a racial level not territorial way like the last one. Just think of how hard it would be to police every city and village just to prevent a fight starting between the two groups that would trigger mass Elf vs Human strife, thus giving the Dominion an upper hand vs the Empire. Now if the Stormcloaks won the Empire now has to contend with the Stormcloaks invading what is left of Morriwind (part of the Empire) and committing Genocide against there long term enemies or visa verse the Dark Elves (members of the Empire) declaring war against the Nords thus dragging the Empire back into war with Skyrim against when they need to be fighting the Second Aldmeri Dominion.

Also have the Morrowind DLC have more missions that help the Blades/Gray Beards, since with where I'm going you're going to need them, so first off they must settle a peace no matter if you killed Paarthurnax or not (though if you did or didn't effects which group will be the stronger of the two). In this DLC have the Blades start trainging none named members and a few named once (in short you must have given them 3 recruits and each of those 3 takes on 3 of there own and Daphine trains 3 more named ones (you can recruit them) and Esbern has you capture/tame a live dragon if from morrowind (if Paarthurnax was killed he acts as a as replacement for Paarthurnax and a peace offering of sorts to the Grey Breads) and he then goes to learn from the Grey Beards. As for the Grey Breads after the the Peace offering Dragon is "tamed" and learns to appreciate other life the Grey Breads ask you to recruit a few more helpful dragons. The end game here is to have the Blades become a real fighting force again with a few low level Dragon Shouts... though that won't be realized until the DLC 2.

The 3 Houses and Morag Tong would make great new quest lines in Morrowind too, the 3 houses all vaying for what is left of Morrowind and the Morag Tong would make great opponents vs the Dark Brotherhood (yes the inverse of what happened in TESIII: Morrowind DLC, but clearly done differently to not be a copy more just the Morag Tong hear about the return of the Listener and realize if you live they will lose power, so you must die). The fate of the Temple would also be a nice quest or quest line.

Have the Skyrim Map effected by more Dark Elf immigrants and them interacting poorly with a few new villages(or villagers) or two. And maybe even having random attacks generated in cities (that target you first but will attack any guards with equal prejudiced too). To make the quest line beatable before any core Skyrim stuff is quite possible

Fixing/discovering why Red Mountain went off will also be a major element here to resolving peace. Plus finding out first hand what happened after TES 3 Morrowind would be nice too but not required at all, after all SWTOR made me hate Revan when I loved him in KotOR so maybe any details about Nerevarine should be left obscure but other facts like the Fate of Red Mountain should be addressed.

Spoiler for Now my desired DLC 2: Cyrodill:

Cyrodill, Yes yes... I can already hear people whining I wanna go somewhere new (well that's DLC 3) but the world has changed in the 200 years and I want the Dragonborn to reshape it like Telos of old did, but in your own way. So as the saying goes "All roads lead to Rome", or in this case The Imperial City so here is a logical stop for a DLC. After uncovering the more of how The Thalmor have been manipulating everything in order to weaken the Empire and poor Skyrim being the on the receiving end of it twice now you're going to the Imperial City to get their asses in gear and focused on the true enemy, the Dominion. Here I'd like your character literally have to eliminate every politician in your way and reshape the Empire from the ground up... if this means killing the Emperor after Titus Mede II (or him if you haven't killed him yet) so be it. Here the Blades (among with new friends/allies) will be your tools and generals you put in charge after killing person X. The end game here is like in Shivering Isles to make Dragonborn the eventual Emperor, though maybe/maybe not in this DLC. As much political backstabbing as possible in this DLC, I want it to feel like an episode of Rome or Spartacus (though I'm not expecting good dialog or voiceacting :P).

Here the Fighters Guild, Mage Guild and Thieves Guild (again) would make great side questlines. Along with More Imperial Legion stuff and/or replacing the legion with Stromcloaks, maybe even giving them better training and gear too as part of the war effort for the final DLC (lolz). (even if final DLC is beaten they'll need equipping to resorting the piece everywhere). Joining the church, would also be a great side quest line here. Plus it would tie into what I most want a meeting with Akatosh, after all you are the dragonborn and he is the Dragons creator. Plus your character following a destiny close Telos and mentioning of a possible ascension to godhood yourself upon your death like he did, so "The Eight" previously known as "The Eight and the One" could one day become "The Eight and the Two", do this because most people loved Oblivion more after you became the Deadric Lord Sheogorath instead of the minion of the guy with the true destiny.

Also here I'd like Jyggalag to make an appearance, after all Cyrodill is near where the portal to The Shivering Isles appeared so it's only fitting he return here for at least a few missions and a mini war between two Deadric Lords via the Politicians in The Imperial City would make such a fitting place for a war between Order vs Madness. I'm noting saying you have to side with one or the other at all, I'm simply saying which problem Deadric Lord you challenge first will depend on your side. In the end both would logically stand in the way of an ally of Akatosh.

Once again to the Blades/Gray Beards. If DLC 1 Blades/Grey Breads missions completed then the real work can begin. Both groups are in agreement the Blades want you to assend the throne of the Empire so they can return to what they once where and the Grey Beards want you to bring about peace that lasted when a Dragonborn was on the thrown. To do this you are to recruit the big Dragon from some where in the Velothi Mountains (quest to find him and his location is random), back in the day he served one of the Early Dragon Slayers whom lived in these parts. Once recruited you return to find out Esbern wants to merge the two groups fully by renouncing his Blades posting and becoming a Grey Bread, this way the Grey Beards can gain in numbers from the practice of indoctrinating older Blade members whom can no longer really carry a Blade effectively and acceptance among the Blades as a rank of honor but since all the Grey Beards are too old to have one of there members become a Blade in kind they suggest you track down a young man whom trained under them but left since he couldn't handle there isolationist ways, that way he can gain what he wanted (a purpose to his shout) and the Blades there member in kind. After you recruit him you find out both the Blades and Grey Beards are in full recruiting status preparing for eventual war against the Dominion (or for maintaining the Empire be it the Imperials or Stromcloaks as an emerging Empire (whom really just want a few things changed from the previous Empire changed back from it's Now White Concordate ways)). This means any possible companion who was able to join the Blades now can (not limited to 3 now) and some of them (and some others who wouldn't join the Blades) now can join the Grey Beards directly instead too. Next off you are to retrieve some lost items/knowledge for both groups so they can gain more power (in short bring back some specific shouts for the Grey Beards in book form and gear/books for the Blades).

Spoiler for Finally my desired DLC 3: The Dominion:

Finally the real enemy, the one you always hated no matter who you sided with those arrogant High Elves and Wood Elf allies. They triggered the war between The Empire and Stromcloaks, they then sturred up historic racial hatred between the Nords and Dark Elves, they have been manipulating the Empires politicians since they founded and now you can finally strike back. However the purpose of TES is being the one being who can do what armies can't, so how can you destroy them alone as much as possible. Simple they are really two nations when you get down to it Valenwood & Summerset Isles (wood elves and high elves respectively), so give them a dose of there own medicine and play them against one another. You can go about this three ways (you can't pick both, like the civil war in skyrim this is one or the other), first by flat out doing what the Thalmor did in DLC 1 by stirring up racial hatred with the easier and closer target of Valenwood and make them feel disenfranchised and used by the High Elves. This is followed by supporting their eventual civil war for freedom in Valenwood followed by invading Summerset Isles and later (once Skyrim Civil War and DLC 2 main quest) then mopping up the victor by military force or via diplomacy side quest missions so instead of invading X fort like in the Skyrim civil war quest line by doing favors for various bosses you put in place but secretly making them dependent and allied on your chosen side (only required to choose a side in Skyrim Civil War Quest) with treaty forged to merge with winning side (so east vs west map but locked into siding with the East). The second way is like what happened with how the Thalmor created the Stromcloaks (when they manipulated Ulfric into turning on the Empire and setting up events they knew the Empire would like and he would rebel against) So manipulating one of there High Elf leaders into thinking the Dominion is corrupt due to whatever reason and helping him subvert and convert Summerset Isles followed by the other side eventually retreating to Valenwood and you having to invade it. (once again your chosen side can invade it later or forge a treaty with them.

Way three: Don't manipulate them first and then invade them, but invade them first them manipulate them into hording all resources for there own nation. Note this can only be done if you have completed the Skyrim Civil War and DLC 1 and 2 main plot lines (and Blades/Grey Beards plot lines), since you won't have the resources to pull this off other wise. In effect divide and conquer after establishing a beachhead (taking over a village and near by fort) then expanding your Empire one region at a time but unlike Skyrim Civil War this one will be more brutal and long since it can only be done if you've done Civil War plot, and the DLC 1 and 2 main plots missions and Blades/Grey Beards missions. So it assumes you are a higher level.

Of course there should be a few side quest lines too... like a under ground movement for the lower classes (non Elves), an equivalent to fighters/thieves/mages guild, etc... sadly I'm not too familiar with this area of the world so this would be a good place for Bethesda to put some of there own ideas.

Spoiler for My desires for game play changes that I want fully implemented by the final DLC, but that can come out piecemeal in any order throughout my 3 desired DLC::

Of course any DLC would just be an excuse for more Dragon Shouts (more crazy ones (what I wouldn't give for a dragon shout version of the Morrowind spells mark and recall (it make loot retrieval so bloody easy, place the mark spell in your house, loot a location and place all desired items in one chest as weight runs out, once location is cleared return to that chest and then no matter how heavy you've become you cast recall and warp back to your house and your favorite loot box, deposit what you plan on keeping and sell the rest after)

Plus, make flame/frost breath last longer like the actual dragons do, add more gear variety (please bring back spears & halberds (a few extra animations for halbreds, since it is a small axe too, each but work the same), they'd work great under two handed weapons (and a small branch to the tree here that gives them some extra attack speed since repeated thrusting is easier than swinging), and crossbows (double reload time of bow and half the range but double damage) and throwing weapons (Way faster attack rate, but way less damage (benefit is poison tipping them or against opponents with low armor ratings... yes this means opponents will now throw poison weapons at you, more so at higher lvls)... also none enchantable but craftable), plus more finishing moves for all current weapons and the new ones. Finally tougher opponents, I want to fight a level 80 dragon when I'm level 80, not a level 50 one... end game is far too easy and make all Dragon Priests your level plus 5 (my fav fight in the game was against a dragon priest when I was level 12... it took me several deaths and 45 minutes to defeat him, though not everyone will enjoy it being that hard so limit it to your level plus 5 and maybe some better gear for them too). So better equip and level the opponents past level 50 once you too are lvl 50, oh and on a personal level I'd love to have 3 or 4 dragons attack me at once if I'm beating them too easily.

More items with unique/powerful enchantments. When you get down to it new gear is nice but new ways to use them is even better and more powerful enchantments on unique items makes them desirable. For example I can't tell you how many times I stopped checking out Items since my own enchanted items with two enchantments due to the perk and a potion that increased the power of enchanting made those items useless to me. It'd be nice to know there is a few items with skills that can't be crafted or a few items with more powerful enchantments (way stronger if one enchantments, a bit stronger if two, and equal or slightly weaker if 3 really good enchantments)

More Dragon attacks. They're a great distraction in the game but get too easy once you know what you are doing so I'd love for them to be able to shoo me away with there wings or smack their tails on the ground more to knock me on the floor, or better yet be able to kick me with there feet or tail while flying past me (but make them unable to dodge when doing a strafing run for balancing issues). Hell, give them a few more variety of shouts too especially once the player hits the soft level cap at level 50.

I know it's been said already but Spell crafting (I'm sick and tired of having weak mage characters at level 50 whom my dagger without sneaking does more damage than the master level spells, at the very least lots of new spells learned in each new DLC... my one handed blade's sword does 299 damage atm without enchantments so why are my strongest spell fire storm limited to 100 (150 with 2 perks) and with a 3 second charge) and being able to fight from horse back (hell make some longer weapons just for use on horse back... something you equip on your ride but don't use off it since it's just not practical to wield off horse back).

Next off have expansions to some factions from Skyrim in each DLC. You maybe the leader of each guild but that doesn't mean you can't take on the toughest assignments for an area yourself and have your minion. For example, you're the Listener of the Dark Brotherhood but that doesn't mean you can't start a quest line to set up a new Sanctuary in Morrowind, Cyrodill, and/or one in Valenwood & Summerset Isles and end the mission line by appointing a speaker in each area under you.

As to the gear variety mentioned above for example Shivering Isles added Amber and Madness gear but if a they where added to Skyrim after the fact many would think hey, then there can be no parks for them to be crafted yourself... well there is are a few solutions here A) make a the DLC have a quest that lets you reassign perks once (maybe all of them or maybe 1/5th of them) B) Make them stronger than base wise so even there is no perk allowing legendary smiting of them they can still be raised pretty high since there base stats where so good or C) Make the Amber be made like Glass but just with a different material so the Glass perk will now effect Amber too (regardless if one is stronger than the other or not) and same goes with Madness being like Daedric or Ebony.

Most people won't care but Marriage needs improving, a) lets be able to remarry someone (a few times at least, it happens in RL so why not here too), b) have kids (none effecting female players until the 4 or 5th months then they lose stamina for a month or so, and finally go to the equivalent jail for 2 or 3 months and lose lost skill progression accordingly (but no skill points lost) and more dialog and a quest line or two per kid (limit of 1 - 3 based on house size, "magic" Birth control after that .) they can have a sleeping role in main quarters if need be space wise, c) more people to marry and more places to do it, d) Marriages cost money (just like real life) which you pay due to purposing. e) Make having twins a possibility it would be pretty funny to have to try to figure out which is which. f) have a radiant system with the familiy (simply put it would be hilarious to come home only to find out your kid is in trouble and ran off now your spouse needs help tracking them down and choosing a punishment (I suggest making them listen to the guards stories about how they used to be an adventurer but then took an arrow in the knee)

Have the Deadric Lords have more missions for you in each new DLC, simply put, why not?

Sounds like fun times you all had together. I've done quite a few LAN RTS and shooters but never, oddly, an RPG ... but get the idea of how awesome it would be . As stated LAN Co-op I do see as possibly but I don't think it likely either but it would be something worth while if done. I think LAN would be the best way to go (and on consul split screen second) since TES has always been about the players choices and shouldn't be something that you and some random dude on the net do together but your choice and that of your good friend on the couch next to you while hanging out together having a good time doing whatever the two of you felt like doing. I can so see me and my friend trying to amass the most rabbit kills in a 5 minute window, which would be next to impossible to do with some random dude on the next... especially when you can't go over to his screen and look at his kill numbers. Hence why if Multiplayer I believe Skyrim should be limited to co-op and over a LAN.

Since I have little to no experience with TES series on PC (whole series on xbox only ) has one of them ever been modded to work as a LAN Co-op? If so, I really need to check it out.

I haven't seen one ready for prime time. There is one mod I've seen (at Nexus) but its very alpha (you see the other player as a static figure, etc) so I haven't bothered.
