Anime for a more mature audience

Anyways I just got done watching Akira and I was wondering if anyone can recommend any anime (or manga) that are geared toward a more mature audience or one that the older folk - probably in the late teens or into there early 20s - would like. I'm trying to broaden my horizon passed fansubs and the regular Senine I usually read.

I tried Gantz, that was awesome. I also tried Death Note, that was awesome. Gunslinger Girl was also pretty good. Animes like those.

And while were at it. Do you think there needs to be more such animes like Akira. Not just movies but actual episodic TV shows. Like Ghost in the Shell for

The best 'mature' anime/manga series I've seen that you didn't mention would be:

Black Lagoon
Darker than Black
Gungrave
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Berserk
Record of Lodoss War
Bartender (manga)

I'm sure there's a lot more (this isn't the genre I go out of my way to watch), but I highly recommend these.

Fate/zero is great, although the first episode is pretty long and full of exposition.

I would also recommend Baccano!, an excellent series that is pretty confusing at first but has a unique setting and characters.

Your definition of "mature" seems to include a large dose of violence. I can suggest a number of shows with adult themes but not necessarily much in the way of violence. I'll start with Monster, House of Five Leaves, and Bartender. Seirei no Moribito or Twelve Kingdoms might also have some appeal.

I can't believe no one's mentioned Jin-Roh!

And if you loved the movie Akira, you might want to check out the manga. Though the film has truly one of the best visuals in anime ever, the scope of the manga goes deeper and the epic feel of the whole things actually feels warranted.

Other anime that might be of interest to you:

Kemonozume
Texhnolyze
Mushishi
Ghost Hound
Shigurui

Just to name a few.

Those titles recommended above are really good indeed.

If you loved the "fight till death" storyline, I'll recommend..
Basilisk ~Kouga Ninpou Chou~ : There's enough violence and drama in this, it'll make you pretty depressed though!

Claymore
Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom
Gankutsuou
Aoi Bungaku
Kaiji
Hellsing

...may be up your alley too.

Psycho-Pass is something you're looking for. The dystopian mystery and the focus behind the "latent" criminals (not counting the crime prediction) are fascinating, filled with decent animation and gorgeous backgrounds. It only started yesterday (with one episode out, but it was intended to be 2-cour), but it looked pretty good as a mature cyberpunk show.

Ergo Proxy: "The world is bigger than you think..." (tiny part of the synopsis, but it's enough to address what it stands for.)

I add

PlanetES

Eve no Jikan
Kino no Tabi
Paranoia Agent
And generally every movie done by Satoshi Kon.

There's no graphic violence nor any "adult content" in them, but they're definitely geared toward a more mature audience and they are beautiful.
