Remarkably after all this time it still seems extremely difficult to do this with any widely available software. Nearly everything I've looked at like DeVeDe seems to require first extracting the subs from the MKV container into separate files. Is there really no free software available that will extract and convert the subs on the fly while creating the DVD image? I don't care if they are hardcoded into the video image; I just want a simple solution where I give the program some softsubbed episodes in the MKV container and get a DVD image to burn out the other end.

I'd prefer a solution that works with Linux, but I'll take a Windows solution if that is the only one out there.

yeah, I've never found anything that does it as one convenient button push, only the multi-step extraction stuff. Therefore, I'd be interesting in hearing any solutions as well because I have a mess of subs I'd like to implement on DVD.

I tried this a few months ago. Better than nothing... really! Work for what I needed.

you could always use this http://www.videohelp.com/tools/XviD4PSP to convert the software (basically encoding it yourself) and you could put the subs (the .ass file) and hard code them into a avi (the program does all the conversion for you), and then put them onto a DVD. I'd only recommend doing so if you have a decent computer.

Thanks, Kuroda, but I want to create a standard DVD playable on a DVD player, not put a bunch of encoded files onto a DVD. There are lots of methods to convert from one format like H.264 in Matroska to, say, XviD in AVI, but that doesn't yield a standard DVD.

Seiji, I found a nice DVD-maker called DVD-styler (freeware). I don't know if it handles subtitles yet, will test it and let you know.

It does conversion on the fly and is handling my mp4 videos great and supposedly does mkv, lets you build your own multipage menus, etc. Gotta check mkv/ass though.

I'm back to this issue after trying DeVeDe again. This time I extracted the ASS files from the Matroska container and pointed DeVeDe at them. I get the sadly common error about SPUMUX on Linux.

So I gave Free MKV Video2Dvd a try. It crashes my Win7 virtual machine when it is launched.

I tried the Windows version of DeVeDe, too, without success. I could not play the created ISO image with mplayer. I'm running it again just to be certain, and I'll try VLC instead. I doubt it will matter, though.

The only thing that comes to mind when I read 'ASS subs' is subway.

I completely forgot to test DVD-styler on MKV/ASS anime subs (It works fine on Rockband animation video output (MP4, etc).

Probably need to update my software anyway. http://www.dvdstyler.org/en/
