The Answers (I)

I feel sick. The world feels surreal.

The word ‘surreal’ can be defined as “having the disorienting, hallucinatory quality of a dream”. That was how it felt when I regained consciousness twenty meters down the hill.

Instead of waking up, it felt as though I was still dreaming. Nagato assured me I wasn’t, when I asked him, but, still… if all this really is a dream, why would he tell me?

Urgh, this line of thinking is useless… what the hell is going on with me?

In, perhaps, exchange for my nausea and twisted perception, I only spent about ten minutes unconscious. However, despite my protests, Nagato still took me to the nurses’ office, only saying that Itsuko had instructed him to do so if I collapsed again. Fortunately, I convinced them not to call my father, but I couldn’t convince them to just let me go back to class in the state I was in…

…So it wasn’t long before Haruki, noticing I hadn’t come to class, burst into the nurses’ office and began fussing over me again.

Argh, thanks to you, my headache’s getting worse! Can’t I ever have a moment’s peace?

By late afternoon, I was feeling a lot better, so they let me go… right in time for the brigade meeting. Sigh.

Oh well, I wouldn’t have skipped anyway. Itsuko wanted us to all talk about what’s been happening to me after Haruki goes home, and, frankly, I want some answers.

…Assuming of course, this all isn’t a dream.

The meeting was uneventful, unless you count the sudden appearance of a half-crazed Computer Society President, who was threatening us with a form of some kind. Haruki only said,


Haruki: Oh good, perfect timing. I was just looking for an angry loli to induct into the SOS Brigade! Come here and sign these membership papers…


He then chased the screaming President all the way down the hall, waving the papers and a pen at her.


Haruki: Well, that was fun.


That’s what Haruki said when he got back. Fun for sadists like you, maybe.


And so, it’s now early evening, about the time we usually pack up.


Haruki: That’s about it for today. You’re all allowed to go home now, so I’ll see you all in here tomorrow. And no, Kyon, I won’t call you tonight, I already promised. You can stop looking at me like that. By the way, are you feeling—

Kyonko: I’m fine.

Haruki: Right, right. And, with that,


He crossed the room, and opened the door.


Haruki: The SOS Brigade may dismiss!


A few seconds of silence. When Haruki realized none of us were getting out of our chairs, he turned around.


Haruki: Uh, I really appreciate your enthusiasm, but…

Itsuko: Don’t bother waiting for us. If you have things to do, go on ahead.


Haruki glared at all of us suspiciously, but eventually just shrugged and threw the clubroom’s key to Itsuko with a “Whatever” and a “see you all again”.

As soon as we were sure he was out of earshot, Asahina-senpai was the first to speak up.


Mitsuuru: You went over to the other side again? What happened?

Itsuko: Yes, I am most intrigued by this. What happened this time? Attacked by perverts again?


Itsuko tries to lighten the mood, but it doesn’t do much for mine.


Kyonko: …I’m going mad.

Mitsuuru and Itsuko: …

Kyonko: Every time I ripple over, either way, I feel like I lose a little bit of my sanity amidst the sound and fury. And, after the last time, and even now… I’ve been feeling that I’m still dreaming… like I’ll never wake up… ever again. I don’t want to go back. I don’t want to.

Itsuko: …

Mitsuuru: Kyon-chan…


The look on their faces tells me I’m giving them reasons to have unnecessary concern for me.

Kyonko: Ah, sorry, sorry. I’m freaking you out, right? Um, as for what happened, we wound up in the clubroom, and Nagato said we were being targeted by enemies or something, so he picked me up and we ran around the whole school. It was pretty exciting, actually, hahaha.


I’m not lightening their moods either, it seems.


Mitsuuru: Kyon-chan, you don’t have to put on a brave face for us, we understand. Well, it’s not like I was over there for long, but—

Kyonko: It’s fine. I’m fine, it’s fine. More importantly, Itsuko, didn’t you have something to say?

Itsuko: …Hmm? Ah, yes. I was going to comment upon the nature of the universe you and all of us have temporarily appeared in. I believe it to be—

Kyonko: A gender-swapped universe, right?

Mitsuuru: …A what?

Itsuko: My my. However did you guess?


I’ll ignore that subtle sarcasm.


Kyonko: The pictures on the wall.


I pointed to the billboard Haruki put up all those months ago.


Kyonko: They were of completely different people, but I still recognized them. They’re clearly us, but with our genders reversed.

Mitsuuru: I-I don’t get it. It sounds like a stupid idea. How would things even work? Like, is everyone important from the past gender-reversed too, or…?

Kyonko: I don’t know, but I wouldn’t think so. The world wouldn’t have worked otherwise.

Itsuko: …Perhaps it is only everyone at North High?

Kyonko: Again, I don’t know, it’s possible.

Mitsuuru: …I can’t even begin to imagine Kyon-chan or Koizumi-san as guys… it seems creepy, somehow…

Kyonko: I could barely recognize… us… it was the hair and facial expressions that made me realize it, though… urgh, and at first I though they were cute, too…

Itsuko: You thought my male self was cute?

Kyonko: Urgh, just, nevermind…

Itsuko: I expect Asahina-san looked pretty much the same, however.

Mitsuuru: H-hey!

Kyonko: Actually, he did. His girl self had big boobs though, for some reason…

Mitsuuru: I-I’m not that girly! Right, Nagato-san?!


Nagato simply continued to read his book, ignoring us.

The mood had, somehow, managed to lighten itself.

I split this one into two parts because it's 4 am AGAIN and I can't do any more of this tonight.

There will be a continuation AND more tomorrow because I'm going to try my damned hardest not to get distracted.

Since we're genderbending, Kyon punishment should be something that involves crossdressing. Something like "wear the seifuku and jump into the pervert principal's lap."

It was so much easier for Haruki to blow off the female CCP. What was she expecting from a confrontation with a 7 foot psychopath with her loli body?

Asahina-senpai tries to bring up another point.


Mitsuuru: Not in any real--? Kyon-chan said there were enemies chasing her and Nagato-san, right? That sounds pretty dangerous to me.

Itsuko: Actually, I was wondering about that. What kind of enemies?

Kyonko: I don’t know, I never saw them. Nagato should know, though.


In unison, we all turn to Nagato, who looks up, closes his book, and speaks directly to me.


Yuuki: Dimensional-variant, gender-displaced alternates of both you and myself. It was decided that coming into contact with these alternates would not be prudent.


He then opened his book again, and retreated into its world.

…Normally I’d say, “I don’t get it”, but this isn’t the time for that. Instead, I’m thinking “why didn’t you tell me this sooner!?”


Mitsuuru: Uh. What?

Kyonko: …He’s saying that we were chased by the female Nagato and the male me.

Itsuko: Well then. There shouldn’t be any problem if we made peaceful contact, right? If you hadn’t run, perhaps there would have been no danger at all.

Kyonko: …You have a point.


That still doesn’t explain how the rippling is driving me nuts, though. Also…


Mitsuuru: Can I just ask a question?

Kyonko: Yeah, of course.

Itsuko: Go ahead.

Mitsuuru: …Isn’t it weird that we’re only going over—

Kyonko: Rippling over.

Mitsuuru: Rippling over when we’re around Kyon-chan? I mean, if we’re all involved in this, why haven’t we all, er, rippled over when anyone else has?

Itsuko: Excellent point. I was about to raise it, actually.

Asahina-san, however, gets out of his chair suddenly, wearing a frustrated expression. He turns to face Nagato.


Mitsuuru: …Why are you just sitting there, reading your book?

Kyon-chan: A-Asahina-senpai? What--?

Mitsuuru: Kyon-chan is in trouble. You can do anything, right? You turned a baseball bat into a homing weapon, you saved us all from a giant cricket… Why can’t you stop this?


Nagato, however, seemed to be pretending that Asahina-san didn’t exist.


Mitsuuru: Listen to me, you—

Kyonko: Wait, please, calm down, Asahina-senpai!

Mitsuuru: …Sorry, Kyon-chan.


I hadn’t wanted to involve Nagato too much in this. He’s been through too much these past 600 years. But, still, if he has a solution…


Kyonko: Nagato, if you can stop this from happening in any way, I’d really appreciate it…

Yuuki: Understood.


Nagato gets up, goes to the shelf, and puts away his book.


Yuuki: Attempting to block dimensional transference. Please hold still.


He places his cold fingers on my forehead (urgh this is embarrassing) and focuses.

We all await the result with bated breath, but…

Nagato twitches a few times, and blinks.


Yuuki: ACCESS DENIED. STATIC INTERFERENCE.

Kyonko: …What…

Yuuki: ACCESS DENIED. STATIC INTERFERENCE.

Kyonko: Is this…


I can feel a chill creeping up my spine. This is something that has never happened before.

Twitch, blink.


Yuuki: ACCESS DENIED. STATIC INTERFERENCE.

Mitsuuru: What is that supposed to mean, that’s there’s nothing you can do? That’s bull, I—


Itsuko silences him by raising a hand again.

I’m becoming more and more scared by the minute. If even Nagato can’t do anything, then…

I think a lot of fear like this is based around the unknown. I have no idea what’s going to happen to me, so I’m scared.

If I knew what was going to happen, then… it still might be horrible but at least, the dread would be gone.

…I don’t want to ask Nagato again, but… he’s the only person that can tell the future.


Kyonko: Nagato… please… can you try to do that synchro-whatever thing? Can you look into the future and tell me what’s going to happen.

Itsuko: Nagato-san has that ability? …I was not aware.


That’s because I never told you.

To my relief, Nagato nods. (As he does, I hear Asahina-senpai muttering something about how “time planes don’t work that way”.)


Yuuki: Requesting synchronization.


Twitch, blink.


Yuuki: ACCESS DENIED. STATIC INTERFERENCE.

Itsuko: Judging by what you said earlier about not being sure about whether your were sleeping or waking, and Nagato-san being unable to synchronize with his future...

Kyonko: What? Go on.

She looks pointedly at Asahina-senpai.


Kyonko: We don’t care. Go on.

Itsuko: …So far, we assumed that the other world was the creation of Haruki Suzumiya. But what if we’re wrong? What if, instead, our world is the creation of another Suzumiya? That we, ourselves, are not real? That we don’t exist?


No, I was wrong, this is what utter terror feels like.

Itsuko had said that with her usual smile. But somehow, I get the feeling that she’s just as terrified of the prospect she just lined out as I am.

Asahina-senpai, however…


Mitsuuru: That’s ridiculous.

Itsuko: It may be, but it makes sense—

Mitsuuru: No it doesn’t. It’s stupid and you know it is. Kyon-chan, look, I’ll contact my future right now. Just let me get into the closet so I can do -classified information-.


Asahina-senpai goes into the broom closet. After a few minutes, during which we can hear the noises of rummaging and him muttering to himself, he popped his head out, and said.


Mitsuuru: There, I’ve contacted the future.

Itsuko: I’m sure you have.

Mitsuuru: I talked to -classified information-, and they said they’re doing just -classified information-. So, there. Doesn’t that disprove your theory?

Itsuko: …It certainly throws it into a bit of doubt, yes.


I breathe a sigh of relief. At least I can be certain that I still exist, right…?

Asahina-senpai, however, doesn’t seem to be finished.

Mitsuuru: Nagato-san, I’m sorry for my outburst earlier… um, even if you can’t protect her from, er, rippling over, and can’t contact your future… can you do anything for Kyon-chan? Please?


I join the pleading.


Kyonko: He’s right, Nagato. I don’t want to wake up in some guy’s bed tomorrow morning. It’s creepy. Please, is there anything you can do?


Without even taking a moment to consider my request,


Yuuki: I will need something you have worn for a long time. Something you value.


Nagato looks down and speaks to me.

…Value… huh…?

This hair ribbon is pretty valuable, I guess. I got it from the older Asahina-san as a present, and I’ve worn it almost every day ever since, so…


Yuuki: That will do.


I remove my ribbon, and hand it to him. Thankfully, I’ve learned to bring hair ties to school now, after that incident back in May. So my hair doesn’t stay down for very long.

Asahina-senpai, don’t look at me like that. It makes me uncomfortable.

Nagato stares at the ribbon for a few seconds, almost seeming as though he’s pondering something.

And then…


Yuuki: ACCESS GRANTED.


He mutters a few words very fast under his breath… and the ribbon floats in the hair, stiffens… and is then sliced into three equal pieces.

H-hey! I like that ribbon!


Yuuki: It will be returned to normal when the crisis is over.

The three pieces, looking like small yellow plastic rectangles, fall into Yuuki’s outstretched palm. He then hands one each to Itsuko and Asahina-senpai.


Mitsuuru: What… is this supposed to do?

Yuuki: Each piece contains the data of the person who wore it. If dimensional transference occurs again, wherever the holder is, they shall cross over with her.

Itsuko: …How useful. So it looks like we won’t need to stay with you all day after all. …If by chance you do wake up in “some guy’s bed”, at least attempt to explain yourself, and give all of us a call. It looks like we, also, might be waking up in unfamiliar beds.

Mitsuuru: …Big boobs, huh…?

Kyonko: Sorry…?

Mitsuuru: Gah, uh, nothing, sorry, nothing.

Kyonko: Okay… right, I’ll call any of you if I ripple over again. And thank you so much, Nagato. Thank you so much.

He merely nods, like always, but I think he truly feels he’s done something important for me.

Alright! It looks like we’re prepared if the worst happens again.

I liked this one. Ilike the climate you gave to tis. I really love seeing the Brigade arguing wich theory is correct (that is why I don't think Sighs is so bad).

I also liked the characterization. Nagato and Itsuko are just how their conterpart. Kyonko is breaking down, but that is understandable. The only "strange" is Mitsuru, but I know what you are trying to do with him, so it is ok. Also, is intresting he being so agains Itsuko's theory, the same probably goes for Mikuru (she did tell Kyon that Itsuki is talking bullshit), but she isn't so active about speaking her opinios.

Also, is funny see you using that ribbon just at the same day I talked about fanfic canon. This is a very good exemple . This also make me realize I miss the rewrites. I like your Mitsuru better then Mikuru now . (well, is not that dificult).

I read that too. A male Arthur make more sense then a female one after all . It is possible even see the original consept. Look here (WARNING huge spoiler from F/SN). Shirou was going to be a meganekko. I read also she(Ayaka/'original' shirou) is the base for Rin as a Character.

Mitsuuru: Rippling over when we’re around Kyon-chan? I mean, if we’re all involved in this, why haven’t we all, er, rippled over when anyone else has?

Itsuko: Excellent point. I was about to raise it, actually.

Kyonko: …It’s just that. It’s because you’re close to me when it happens.

Itsuko: …?

Kyonko: I’ve rippled over a couple of other times, only for maybe a few seconds. Nothing major like today, but… this is happening to me, and only me, and you’re being drawn into it.

Itsuko: …I figured as much.

Kyonko: Then suggest a solution, if you’re so smart! I don’t want to be doing this anymore.

Itsuko: …I have nothing.


Asahina-san, however, gets out of his chair suddenly, wearing a frustrated expression. He turns to face Nagato.


Mitsuuru: …Why are you just sitting there, reading your book?

Kyon-chan: A-Asahina-senpai? What--?

Mitsuuru: Kyon-chan is in trouble. You can do anything, right? You turned a baseball bat into a homing weapon, you saved us all from a giant cricket… Why can’t you stop this?


Nagato, however, seemed to be pretending that Asahina-san didn’t exist.


Mitsuuru: Listen to me, you—

Kyonko: Wait, please, calm down, Asahina-senpai!

Mitsuuru: …Sorry, Kyon-chan.


I hadn’t wanted to involve Nagato too much in this. He’s been through too much these past 600 years. But, still, if he has a solution…


Kyonko: Nagato, if you can stop this from happening in any way, I’d really appreciate it…

Yuuki: Understood.


Nagato gets up, goes to the shelf, and puts away his book.


Yuuki: Attempting to block dimensional transference. Please hold still.


He places his cold fingers on my forehead (urgh this is embarrassing) and focuses.

We all await the result with bated breath, but…

Nagato twitches a few times, and blinks.


Yuuki: ACCESS DENIED. STATIC INTERFERENCE.

Kyonko: …What…


Twitch, blink.


Yuuki: ACCESS DENIED. STATIC INTERFERENCE.

Kyonko: Is this…


I can feel a chill creeping up my spine. This is something that has never happened before.

Twitch, blink.


Yuuki: ACCESS DENIED. STATIC INTERFERENCE.

Mitsuuru: What is that supposed to mean, that’s there’s nothing you can do? That’s bull, I—


Itsuko silences him by raising a hand again.

I’m becoming more and more scared by the minute. If even Nagato can’t do anything, then…

I think a lot of fear like this is based around the unknown. I have no idea what’s going to happen to me, so I’m scared.

If I knew what was going to happen, then… it still might be horrible but at least, the dread would be gone.

…I don’t want to ask Nagato again, but… he’s the only person that can tell the future.


Kyonko: Nagato… please… can you try to do that synchro-whatever thing? Can you look into the future and tell me what’s going to happen.

Itsuko: Nagato-san has that ability? …I was not aware.


That’s because I never told you.

To my relief, Nagato nods. (As he does, I hear Asahina-senpai muttering something about how “time planes don’t work that way”.)


Yuuki: Requesting synchronization.


Twitch, blink.


Yuuki: ACCESS DENIED. STATIC INTERFERENCE.

She looks pointedly at Asahina-senpai.

Itsuko: …So far, we assumed that the other world was the creation of Haruki Suzumiya. But what if we’re wrong? What if, instead, our world is the creation of another Suzumiya? That we, ourselves, are not real? That we don’t exist?


No, I was wrong, this is what utter terror feels like.

Itsuko had said that with her usual smile. But somehow, I get the feeling that she’s just as terrified of the prospect she just lined out as I am.

Asahina-senpai, however…


Mitsuuru: That’s ridiculous.

Itsuko: It may be, but it makes sense—

Mitsuuru: No it doesn’t. It’s stupid and you know it is. Kyon-chan, look, I’ll contact my future right now. Just let me get into the closet so I can do -classified information-.


Asahina-senpai goes into the broom closet. After a few minutes, during which we can hear the noises of rummaging and him muttering to himself, he popped his head out, and said.


Mitsuuru: There, I’ve contacted the future.

Itsuko: I’m sure you have.

Mitsuuru: I talked to -classified information-, and they said they’re doing just -classified information-. So, there. Doesn’t that disprove your theory?

Itsuko: …It certainly throws it into a bit of doubt, yes.


I breathe a sigh of relief. At least I can be certain that I still exist, right…?

Right?

Asahina-senpai, however, doesn’t seem to be finished.

Mitsuuru: Nagato-san, I’m sorry for my outburst earlier… um, even if you can’t protect her from, er, rippling over, and can’t contact your future… can you do anything for Kyon-chan? Please?


I join the pleading.


Kyonko: He’s right, Nagato. I don’t want to wake up in some guy’s bed tomorrow morning. It’s creepy. Please, is there anything you can do?


Without even taking a moment to consider my request,


Yuuki: I will need something you have worn for a long time. Something you value.


Nagato looks down and speaks to me.

…Value… huh…?

This hair ribbon is pretty valuable, I guess. I got it from the older Asahina-san as a present, and I’ve worn it almost every day ever since, so…


Yuuki: That will do.


I remove my ribbon, and hand it to him. Thankfully, I’ve learned to bring hair ties to school now, after that incident back in May. So my hair doesn’t stay down for very long.

Asahina-senpai, don’t look at me like that. It makes me uncomfortable.

Nagato stares at the ribbon for a few seconds, almost seeming as though he’s pondering something.

And then…


Yuuki: ACCESS GRANTED.


He mutters a few words very fast under his breath… and the ribbon floats in the hair, stiffens… and is then sliced into three equal pieces.

H-hey! I like that ribbon!


Yuuki: It will be returned to normal when the crisis is over.

The three pieces, looking like small yellow plastic rectangles, fall into Yuuki’s outstretched palm. He then hands one each to Itsuko and Asahina-senpai.


Mitsuuru: What… is this supposed to do?

Yuuki: Each piece contains the data of the person who wore it. If dimensional transference occurs again, wherever the holder is, they shall cross over with her.

Itsuko: …How useful. So it looks like we won’t need to stay with you all day after all. …If by chance you do wake up in “some guy’s bed”, at least attempt to explain yourself, and give all of us a call. It looks like we, also, might be waking up in unfamiliar beds.

Mitsuuru: …Big boobs, huh…?

Kyonko: Sorry…?

Mitsuuru: Gah, uh, nothing, sorry, nothing.

Kyonko: Okay… right, I’ll call any of you if I ripple over again. And thank you so much, Nagato. Thank you so much.

He merely nods, like always, but I think he truly feels he’s done something important for me.

Alright! It looks like we’re prepared if the worst happens again.

Yes, I realize there was supposed to be a choice here, but it would have ruined the mood I was trying to go for.

Why was Kyonko the only slider? The ribbon/plot coupon thing is pretty blatant now. Also, wouldn't strands of her DNA/hair be better? And despite what danchou promised, not much philosophy/SF metaphysics ramblings by Itsuko.

Maybe the Mitsuuru perversion feels off because we've always associated him with prefering flat chests?

Character Materials lists his name as as "Saver" in clear English, and I'm convinced that's just them saying "Saviour" incorrectly.

Yeah, probably. I've only read english speaker fans writing it, so I was not sure if it was correct.

I don't think you can clone something from hair... it's dead cells, right? Besides, hair can be lost easily. Big plastic rectangles can't.

I don't read enough hard SF to really feel comfortable having Itsuko pull out various quantum physics theories, sorry. I'm a social sciences student for god's sake. The most interesting thing you can expect from me is Jung's crap (that they don't even teach anymore) and, honestly, that's Kyonko's department, not Koizumi's.

Besides, it's not like either Koizumi's random-ass theories mean anything anyway. They're just used to pad out space and make Haruhi seem more science-y.

If you can suggest something you'd like to see or hear, I'd be glad to add it in or make Editor-kun add it in, but it's not the sort of thing I can immediately come up with.

Dammit and now you have me wishing I'd pulled out something about anima/animus... maybe I can throw a passing reference to that on Day 4 or something.

I meant that the original story Nasu wrote probably followed a plot similar to the Fate scenario only. UBW and HF were probably designed when they decided on the VN. The characters don't really fit into UBW or HF. To become a counter guardian, Shirou would have made some questionable/stupid life choices. Choices that I just don't see a girl could reasonably make. "Saver" probably foreshadows how she is saved from this fate.

The more heavy hitting theories should be saved for later, I think. Maybe this is a good time to discuss the odds of someone being born in he opposite gender. Or born intersexual. Mendellian odds say 50%, I think? And the odds for a large group of people is very large.

Ah, I understand now. However, even if Fate was thought before, HF was probably the first to be created (as a VN game). If you read the flowchart, you can gain some points with Saber and Rin, even though they are meanless. Probably all routes were intended to branche from there.

Just because Shirou and Saber were enderbended, don't mean everyone was too. I've read theorys that the original main character was going to be Saver isnted Shirou/Ayaka. Maybe that is why Saber changes master so many times.

As you said, nothing Itsuki says mean anything. He clarelly make it up on spot. Itsuko should do something similar. Like mentioning "cogito ergo sum" when theorysing they might not be real. Even if this was the case, the fact they think proves they exist, or something similar. She also could babble her original theorys, from novel1, about Haruki being god, when she says he might created another universe (obviusly, don't mean she would belive what she is saying). There are probably some other things she could say here, but I haven't had any idea for now.

Als, I forgot to say, but Itsuko being cynical about Mitsuru talking with the future was cool. I always got the inpresion that Itsuki/ko don't take Mikuru/tsuru very seriously and vice versa. The Koizumis probably think that the Asahinas are useless, while the Asahinas thinks that the Koizumis are a kind of fanatic religious (both are +- correct).

Unrelated from the current discussion, but how would be the endless eight restaurant scene genderbended? Kyon proves he can be very similar to Haruki when he want. This mean Kyonko would enter in geki mode and act similar to Haruhi? I am curious now to see how it would work.

I do like the sarcasm that Itsuko displays toward Mitsuuru throughout the scene. But I do wonder how that would work with Itsuki and Mikuru.
Probably the same, since Itsuki is usually blunt when he's talking about his theories or his precious "God".
