Lol, has Hayate no Gotoku ever really bothered to explain the references? How would you explain all the homages to TTGL? They're incredibly random. Same thing with Kurausu and his Lance of Longinus/AT Field parodies. He can suddenly project an AT Field and Maria somehow knows what it is? This really isn't all that much different.

Like most other parodies (Lucky Star, Pani Poni Dash, etc), HnG expects you to either get it and laugh, or not notice.

I just figured with the focus they've given in the manga on special techniques at times they'd throw something in the anime about it, especially since in that one episode/chapter they found Himegami's book on how to get one (incidentally, was that another copy of it he whipped out when Hayate powered up?).

Really? I thought that book was just a parody on how shounen show make an entire arc on acquiring a special attack (HnG calls it "必殺技", lit. means "certain kill technique"). They throw absolutely ridiculous tasks like Tenjou Tenge's "punch one pan, and make another one move" at the protagonist.

I have to admit I didn't read the manga very carefully. Supposedly, at the end of Vol. 6, he acquires his special called "Hayate no Gotoku". But I either don't remember, or can't find it. Maybe that's why there is more emphasis in the manga.

Yep, that's the special move he got after training. It is a training arc in the manga, it's most of volume 6. The anime hasn't covered the arc yet, the only mention of him acquiring a special move I recall was when they found the book Himegami had written about how to get one. It's a fairly notable part of the manga's plot, if I remember correctly, with several earlier mentions apart from the training arc itself, including the duel with Nonohara (where Hayate first hears about a butler's special technique) and at one point asking Maria if she had a special technique (a few chapters later, where he first states his intention of wanting to learn one).

I'm guessing a second season, myself. They've got plenty of manga material left to work with, especially with the occasional anime-original episode inserted. I have to say, Hayate no Gotoku is probably the only series I know which makes excellent episodes that have nothing to do with the manga.

I wish I could say that with confidence, but the anime kinda diverged from the manga at the beginning. Now that I look at the volumes on my computer, Hayate didn't visit Hakuou until Vol 5. He visited in the anime at ep 4...

This is probably because of how popular Hina is, but still, the manga probably isn't a very good indication of anything. The preview suggests a return to manga story, but we'll see.

I agree that the fillers are palatable, due to the hilarious parodies, but reading the raws this afternoon just reminds me of how much this series needs character development. The manga is awesome at Vol 9 with plenty of Maria and Hina development.

when I read that in the secon post I was thinking it was a typo because "Himegami was Nagi's butler before Hayate. He has yet to make an appearance in the manga." I wonder how the anime people will fix this.

Very, very good episode. Random things noted while I watched.

-Klaus getting plowed by the 4-star Dragonball. Given that Tama was using a bicycle pump on him at the end, he must've been pinballing around the mansion for some time.

-I've never seen Yukiji that drunk before. I'm amazed that she was able to move so normally when she showed up later on. At least Hina was sweet and left her a Christmas present.

-So the Dark Butler arc draws to a close with the snake controlling everything all along. Wasn't expecting that.

-The obvious one: Gurren-Lagann a mecha very closely resembling Gurren-Lagann! Too bad we never saw a drill or anything come out of it.

-Excellent eyecatches. Nagi gets to be Simon AND Nia, Hayate gets the Kamina Shades of Manliness, and Hina gets to cameo as Yoko.

-So the snake made Shion a man? Maybe there's more to Shion than being a reverse trap.

-...why must Hayate make such a good trap? Him wearing those catgirl maid clothes was too convincing.

-Hina kendo action! Yes!

-Himegami Princess God continues to prove his coolness. The man can take out a Gurren-Lagann lookalike. That's power.

-The final battle with Hayate using the super butler outfit was awesome. The epic music helped too. So he finally got his hissatsu waza.

-Poor Nishizawa. Hopefully someone bought her Christmas cakes. Or she got to eat them all. Either way, she wins.

-Cute ending with everyone at the Christmas party.

Now that things are caught up, onto the final stretch. I'm ready.

God these past HnG episodes were too epic. Especially in this one because the animation quality and level of excitement in this episode was especially high. I'm looking forward to HnG episodes now and it is one of my favorites series I'm following. I'm glad I picked up this anime and I'm eager for the next episodes.

The animation style is definitely a tribute to the infamous episode 4 from said series. It's so distinct from HnG's usual animation (or lack of one) that I'd say it's the biggest parody effort yet. Also, LOL at countless Gurren-Lagann eye-catches, from obvious ones to not-so-obvious ones (Hinagiku making a Viral face, Shion looking like Kamina).

And finally Hermione Hayate looks unbelievably convincing in that neko-maid outfit.

Does anyone know what the Ultimate Butler Armor thing was parodying?

Wow...just when I was thinking Hayate was starting to get into a rut, the last few episodes have just been epic, this one especially. An entire episode of Gurren-Lagann parody can't help being awesome. The superintendent's going to have some explaining to do about what's left of the stadium to the board of directors though...
