How does Ed use alchemy without an array??

I know technically he makes an alchemy array by clapping both his hands together and then performs alchemy. But what I'm asking is if anyone knows exactly how that works in detail. For example if it is his auotmail hand that has anything to do with it? I also noticed that in episode 27:

Ed's sensei can also performs alchemy in the same way Ed does, by putting her hands together and then performing the alchemy

So if anyone knows in detail how they go about doing that then please post!

Not very likely....it will probably be brought up into part of the story in the next 5eps or so I'm guessing. But I'm not sure when it will be throughrouly explained...not even the manga has explained it~

Spoiler for Since the anime is almost caught up, I recommend everyone to might as well wait and watch for yourself, but if you still want to know...:

Jackpot! Although in the Chinese scanslation Izumi never specifically mentioned what she did (other than that we know she performed the same forbidden alchemy and lost some of her internal organs), the sudden change of subject regarding children during the meal (in the manga I recall Ed raised the question instead) pretty much hinted that she probably tried to revive or create a baby...

Spoiler for As for the "Truth"::

In the Chinese scanslation, Izumi said "Once you've gone to (reached) the realm (state) of the Truth it can be done" in response to Al's question on how to perform no-array transmutation. After the whole back-fire during the human transmutation, the entity ("I am referred by you (humans) as [World], or [Universe], or [God], or [Truth], or [All], or [One]. And then, I am [You]!") in that realm sent Ed into this huge gate that contained strands/threads that look like films of knowledge, history, etc--those information inside that gate is what I believe to be the "Truth." Once you've seen it, you'll be able to perform transmutation without an array. Then again, according to Izumi it takes a "genius" to survive the trip so it's not like anyone can do it. Al has seen the "Truth" as well, but he lost his memory of it due to the traumatic experience AND his body as well...so in my opinion, technically Al didn't exactly make it out alive unlike Ed who was known to be the "genius" of the two (or was Al just unlucky?) But yah, once Al regained his memory of that time, he was able to perform no-arrary transmutation as well...which led to this hilarious scene in Chapter 33:

It seems that the ability to use it with no array is also what makes an Alchemist 'special', for whatever reason, which seemed important for the creation of the Philospoher's Stone. At least, not a 'normal' Alchemist.

That manga page made me laugh for a while xD. I really need to watch the new ep, anyway I think his auto-mail arms has more to do with it than clapping. I saw somewhere something about the array being built into the arm or something. Sorry but I totally can't remember all of it hope that helps anyway.

Winry seemed to like 'pure' automail in the ep in the automail valley - she made the arm (remember it was a complete replacement), and I can't imagine she know some secret technlolgy...

Nah he can do transmutations without his robe,
Just wait 1-2 episodes and you will know how he does it

Hehe...of course the circle is required even for Ed, but not any ordinary alchemist can actually perform transmutation without drawing/presenting an array...and why Ed can do so is the point of this thread.
