Assuming the I.S. core developed enough, like core 001 for example, it's probable that they can develop humanoid avatar for themselves (ByakuShiki has a little girl as one we think). Though, just like Zanpakuto, they're only appear in spiritual (i.e. virtual) realm.

Nah, assuming Maya's postulation is right, more like almost all of them are males, and ByakuShiki is one of the few female one.

I find that rather odd, considering that ISes can only be used by women. Why would the manifestation of themselves be males?

The very first volume actually.

It's canonicity is arguable, after all that's just speculation by the characters. Maya likened the I.S.es to a living partner, not tools. I.S. posses emotion and identity by default, though once again, to become similar to human the core must be vastly developed.

The girls then speculated if boyfriend analogy is correct. No clear answer, but that's the only clue we got so far.

So the I.S. can be anything, male or female, as of now.

Camouflaged how? Ichika is damn muscular and has broad shoulder, that's not going to work.

Voice can be faked if he's a good enough (voice) actor (Tieria, yes, that means you)

On a side note, I've once said I.S. top speed is severely limited by their high-drag design right? Currently, I'm thinking of giving two of the few machine solution for that. Unlike other I.S., it's possible for those two design to enter supersonic cruise without resorting to Ignition boost at less than 10 meter altitude.

Basically, both of them create a more aerodynamic environment for themselves instead of using protective barrier and putting brute force to the thruster.

The first design, made by Canada, use highly-polarized bayonet to create ionization effect on the air surrounding the rifle, reducing the drag considerably. The Second Design, made by Switzerland, use focused pinpoint barrier to 'break' the air instead, creating virtual nosecone.

Of course, as with any tools, both can be utilized as weapon as well (Plasma stake and ram shield in that regard). But their main function always been mobility support.

LiowXing's shield was similar to the second one... I think. But the shield density had to be so high that it drained energy like hell so such a function was time limited.

Both allow short burst ultra dash or extended high speed travel by adjusting the system output. (Though the plasma spike is much less powerful at maximum setting, it's more energy efficient)

Those system reduce the burden received by the machine, contrast to machine like Igel or ByakuShiki that reinforce the entire frame to withstand the burden itself.
