Some of the pairings you listed will indeed appear in exhibition. However, Madoka will certainly not appear because maglor hates her.

Okay I guess it needs an explanation. I meant "relative unpopularity" within the anime, but I disagree that 3rd place isn't "unpopular."

popular = 1st or 2nd
"unpopular" = 3rd, 4th, etc...
unpopular = crack

So basically, quotes means for lack of a better word, or "not the first two pairings you think of." I believe that "unpopular" is where a clear line is drawn. For oreimo, there's a clear line between 2nd and 3rd place.

Similarly, the Ichika x Laura pairing isn't the first two people think of, nor is it a crack pairing. It's just... "unpopular."

Crack pairings are simply crack. They're not hated on precisely because they're not perceived as a viable threat to a more popular pairing. People can laugh them off.

3rd (and sometimes 4th/5th) viable pairings actually can get hated on, or at least make people antsy at the thought of them, because they're an actual viable threat to the two more popular pairings. Hence, in some ways, they're more "unpopular" than a crack pairing. They're more unpopular in that they're more likely to attract hate.

It still depends on the anime. For one with lots of characters like Hayate no Gotoku!, I'd consider that for Hayate vs. Athena/Hinagiku/Nagi/Ayumu to be all "popular," and we'll have to get to the 5th pairing for the "unpopular" category, like Maria. There's really no crack pairing for Hayate (unlike you count like, Sonia).

For Ore no Imouto, I only consider 4 characters to be "non-crack" - 2 are popular, 2 are unpopular.

This is why I didn't want to try to give a "definition" because there isn't one. There's no use arguing semantics.
