"Spell disaster", huh? That is an interesting choice of words for a translation. I know it's far from right but I still have hopes for Shizu, specially since it seems the part about Koromo saying she isn't just strong doesn't have anything weird word choices in it.

This chapter was pure non stop action, with blows being thrown from everywhere, the mighty falling hard, desperate struggles, and of course, hopes and dreams. I wish actual shounen manga could have this much awesome and yuri overtones

On one side, we have Mairu desperately trying to give Shindouji, and more specifically, Himeko, a fighting chance by going all out at every possible chance, and does so like a toral badass, creating my favorite moment of the chapter: Her "catching" Matano's hook. That was ridiculously awesome by itself, and then showing Himeko getting the first yuriblade made it even better. It also seems their Memento (pokemon, look it up) power isn't so perfect, though, which gives Mairu even more reasons to risk it big, as seen at the end of the chapter, and on that note, I never expected Shindouji to get the cliffhanger ending for a chapter, but it greatly pleases me, as it shows no team in this match is mere seat filler, which makes things much more exciting.

Also, "was it a big one"? I believe we have not only the gayest, but the lewdest power in the sakiverse, and that is saying something.

As for little Arata, she finally got the chance to show what she's made of after remaining quiet for the first half, with a couple of nice blows that caught pretty much everyone off guard. Arata may not be the most outspoken girl, but she knows how to get her point across. However, at least to me, the best part was her inner monologue, particularly the last page, pure dawwwww, then SHINING TSUMO, and then that smile from Harue to finish it. On hindsight, this probably ties with Mairu's moment of glorious badassery.

As for FunaQ, she's simply having a blast, collecting data left and right, and then using it to pierce through Matano's defenses like nobody's business, putting Senriyama back in the game for sure and giving us a good insight into Arata's bowling based style at last.

On that note, am I the only one who thinks Greek Church sounds like the name of a stand?

One of the best chapters we've had so far. FunaQ is very pervy here and its pretty funny. Mairu and Arata are kicking some ass and both looking awesome. I also like that we get to see Yae again and probably will see her in the main manga with the individuals. Still don't think Shizu is much but she will have chance to prove me wrong whenever she's up.

Shizu has gotta have SOMETHING buried inside of her to give her some sort of chance to throw down with Saki and Awai at the same time. Being able to get back up and dust herself off no matter how much her opponents wail on her is great an all but unless she's got some sort of offense to go with that endurance.... Though I suppose like Arata the author has been saving Shizu's screen time for this match to show her off.

I really like this chapter. It further shows how Senriyama is actually a strong team when they're not just playing a defensive game to protect Toki's earnings; so far, only Izumi has proven to actually be relatively poor-performing. Both Sera and FunaQ demonstrated exactly why Senriyama is a seeded team.

FunaQ was my favorite this chapter. For some reason, I like players that actually use skill in their game rather than relying on hax magic mahjong 100% of the time, and FunaQ did something that made me squee inside: she took her skill and data mahjong, analyzed the crap out of a hax ability user, and proceeded to ron a total of 23000 points out of her in a bunch of epic "screw your ability, I'm better" moves. I would definitely like to see more examples of hard work and skill > hax mahjong in the future. Hiroe for #1 XD.

Mairu was also really awesome. She was another player that mostly used her own skills to win, and although it's a bit disappointing that most of her wins have been from Tsumo rather than clever play, catching Matano's hook was a move of badassery. Arata's story was also awesome; we got to see that her ability is kinda like Yuu's - potent, difficult to form a strategy around, and very difficult to defend against. Ultimately, we have proof that Achiga's team isn't really weak at all - they just need to get Kuro up-to-speed.

Also, something that I completely missed the first read-through: Arata's "shining Tsumo" was on the eight of circles (her wait is on the seven or eight), which is not in either the Greek Church or the washout. Either this means that there are other formations that she can draw from, or that she's actually breaking away from the constraints of her ability. Also, her suji wait heavily implies that Arata has also seen through Matano's weakness; it's a single wait and doesn't make sense for any bowling formation, so the only way that it makes sense at all is for her to purposely make her wait a non-circle suji and just plain wait for Matano to back out, misread her ability, and discard right into her wait. This makes Arata a lot more awesome than I had first thought the first time I read through this chapter.

Poor Matano. getting outplayed by everyone on the table. Isn't it sad?

As for speculation on Shizu's playing style, we only see one concrete example of her play style at the end of the Senriyama-dominated match. Dealing into a haneman aside (given the performance of the Saki national-level strategists, perhaps that indicates that Shizu is not skilled at reading discards?), Shizu was able to modify her (large point value!) hands a total of three times in a match, starting from a very poor hand. This could possibly indicate that Shizu:

Plays extremely quickly, and forms large hands with very little wait. This is evidenced by her forming, from a poor starting hand, a Haneman, a Yakuman, and a seven pairs hand (in order) in rapid succession.
Can change and adapt to the situation at will, often thinking outside the box. This is basically her "determination."
Is relatively lucky, playing on the conclusions from the first bullet point.

A lot of this indicates that Shizu could be a very strong player when given more focus and when Achiga is down in points, since building huge hands in a few rounds is pretty powerful even in Saki. If we can count practice matches as evidence (I'm excluding the anime matches where Achiga loses to every strong player in Nagano), we also noted that Shizu is repeatedly crushed by Koromo. Since we know Koromo's abilities, we can infer:

Shizu may not be skilled in changing the flow and/or controlling the board (or if she is, certainly not at a level to counter Koromo/Saki). This may indicate that she will struggle quite a bit against Saki or against the expert board-controlling strategists like Hiroe or Hisa (not that it matters since both play lieutenant).
Shizu may not be able to deal with monster-class advanced abilities. It is assumed that Awai possesses such an ability based on commentary (although the manga might surprise me by making Awai turn out to be a super-strategist).
Shizu may not be able to counter magic mahjong very well. Of course, this is Koromo we're talking about, so this is a really weak assumption that probably does not bear fruit.

From this, I've made a few educated guesses:

Shizu is the type of player that is extremely lucky and gets rapid large hands.
Shizu may be less adept at finer strategic play, which makes her a perfect Saki antagonist: build a bunch of large hands quickly, make everyone else on the table go 'wtf', and get crushed by our hero with her full dominance hax.
In essence, she's a sort of anti-Ako in everything except speed. Less skilled, better luck, superior at building large hands and reforming them when needed.

This is all speculation, of course. We haven't seen enough of Shizu's playing style to really get anything solid on her style.

EDIT: I just realized something. If my assumptions are correct, then Shizu is the stereotypical shonen hero (determination, lots of luck, lots of talent, very little finesse)

Won't it just be an absolute troll move if the Achiga-hen is actually the story of Achiga trying their best but losing in the semi-finals =p? This is, of course, just a pure guess on my part, but it would be pretty hilarious if it was true.

There are a lot of things I can use to describe Shizu: strong determinination, don't know when to give up, etc; but spell disaster isn't one of those (that's Teru). Also note that Koromo didn't say that Shizu is a strong player as in skillful at mahjong. What is that supposed to mean? How can someone spell disaster without being insanely strong? I wonder whether there are some alternative way to translate what Koromo said?

Here's a thoery: I believe that Shizu never once face a monster player in the official match before. Perhaps her power is something that only works against monsters. Something along the line of anti-monster barrier similar to Touma's imagine breaker. Not exactly the same as sealing off monster powers like Sae's, but the ability to repell/negate the effect of those powers when use against her. It's also likely that she can't use this ability right away, but start developing her immunity after being hit by those powers a few times just like when someone caught a chicken pox.

I've thought for a long time that that would be the best ending: it avoids the confusion of having two sets of protagonists in the final and breaks the mould of these kinds of stories. Koromo's comment makes it highly unlikely, though (not that it wasn't highly unlikely anyway) - why mention Shizu as a tough opponent to Saki if Saki won't meet her?

There are far worse trolls out there. A gigantic troll would be Achiga ending up first place and Shiraitodai 2nd place. A real absolute troll would be Shiraitodai don't get to advance at all; what we saw at the end of ep. 25 season 1 where Teru about to destroy Yuuki with nine lanterns actually happen in the individual match.

Well , What koromo said indicated that Shizuno is a good player somehow.......maybe what we haven't seen her "awakening" state yet. Who know, maybe she can throw out something like Tenhou, Renho in her "awakening" state AND in her "awakening" state she will untie her ponytail!!!

OR If Shizu power only work on monster like someone predictions here, the match must be fun!.

I mean, What the point for being strong or having demonic power if you can't even reach tenpai?? Shizu ability may have disadvantage againist Koromo power, so that she can't really do anything. Are you me or are you just reading my mind? I've had this same idea for a while now, though I believe it would be better left for the finals, given how Shizu's ponytail is even more of a trademark for her than her own feet are to Saki. Both going full power at the same time makes more sense, and besides, Shizu is putting on a skirt for this match, that's big enough of a change.

That's Satoha. Rinkai's vanguard and the 3rd placer in the Nationals behind Teru and Kei. If you re-watch the anime's first OP, you'll see a cameo of her fighting against Teru. How long had Ritz planned this?

Unfortunately, I have to debunk this theory; Koromo's no tenpai aura works only when there is a full moon or at the very least when it is at night. Shizuno played Koromo at noon where Koromo's power is less than half of its true potential.

I google translated that and what came out said "A little bit awkward."

Someone in /u/ said that "spell disaster" is a very liberal interpretation of the moonrunes. According to the post, it would probably be more appropriate to say "a bit troublesome" or "could give you a hard time." The reason it was translated as spell disaster is probably because they were trying to emulate Koromo's archaic way of speech. We're probably making mountains out of molehills.

Beside, if Shizuno will ever have a power. It would certainly not be renhou, tenhou etc. Since those hands are diametrically opposite of her core trait which is endurance or never giving up. In fact, I could not think of any hands that are less about endurance than those hands.

We do see in the Nagano finals match that Koromo's ability is not absolute. Saki broke it somewhere in the middle of the game, for instance, which is evidenced by Kana suddenly regaining her high-point hands and Yumi ron-ing successfully.

I think we need to look at Koromo as a character to analyze that statement just as much as we need to look at Shizu. A big part of Koromo's playing style is, more or less, to shut down all the other player and drown then in despair (her no-tempai ability was first activated before the full moon rose, so it's definitely not a moon-only ability). The first real loss that she has experienced - ever, really, since Ryuumonbuchi only lost in nationals last year due to Touka getting the team DQ'd before Koromo could play - was in the game with Saki where she tried to break all of the other players, and none of them would give up in response. Since this was a life-changing experience for her, it's not beyond expectations to assume that she has developed respect for players that never give up; after all, she has seen three players - not just Saki - that broke out of her ability just because of their determination alone.

It happens, then, that Achiga's captain is more or less the exact same. She never gives up no matter what sort of pressure you put on her, and it is entirely possible that she was able to at least break out of Koromo's field control. Koromo's ability is still hax, of course (she can read other people's hand values and wait tiles), but knowing the Nagano finals match, that could very well be what she means when she commended Shizu - she's dangerous because she never gives up, and she's dangerous because she can reform her hand when the situation arises and break out of any original expectations - and not that she's dangerous because she also has magic mahjong.

Even if Shizu does have an "awakening" state, I don't think that Koromo really witnessed it. Harue did state that the team was never really able to beat Ryuumonbuchi in the end, which indirectly implies that Shizu never was able to beat Koromo. I don't think that Koromo would really take considerable notice of an ability that's not even strong enough to counter her at half power; enough to warn someone that could beat her at max gear.

It would also be a huge deus ex if Shizu was suddenly revealed to have dangerous magic mahjong, which she never ever used before (not even in the match when they were in danger of being eliminated by Kentani!) because it requires the stars and moon to align, just to be able to beat Awai/Saki. Aside from Cold Touka (which didn't really matter since it was only during a practice match), Ritz was always very consistent in her character's abilities, so somehow, I doubt that she'll suddenly hide an ability now.

When she sits down for the "light warm-up", Harue says that she'll play at Shizu's "first speed", while Ako will play at Shizu's "second speed". I realize that Ako seems to be a fast player by what we've seen for Sakiverse, but that comes at the downside that her hand totals are really REALLY puny. So... Does this mean though that we'll get Hypersonic Shizu? __________________

The Green One Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2010	Shizu has gotta have SOMETHING buried inside of her to give her some sort of chance to throw down with Saki and Awai at the same time. Being able to get back up and dust herself off no matter how much her opponents wail on her is great an all but unless she's got some sort of offense to go with that endurance.... Though I suppose like Arata the author has been saving Shizu's screen time for this match to show her off.

Also note that Koromo didn't say that Shizu is a strong player as in skillful at mahjong. What is that supposed to mean? How can someone spell disaster without being insanely strong? I wonder whether there are some alternative way to translate what Koromo said? Here's a thoery: I believe that Shizu never once face a monster player in the official match before. Perhaps her power is something that only works against monsters. Something along the line of anti-monster barrier similar to Touma's imagine breaker. Not exactly the same as sealing off monster powers like Sae's, but the ability to repell/negate the effect of those powers when use against her. It's also likely that she can't use this ability right away, but start developing her immunity after being hit by those powers a few times just like when someone caught a chicken pox.

Marina2 Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006	Well , What koromo said indicated that Shizuno is a good player somehow.......maybe what we haven't seen her "awakening" state yet. Who know, maybe she can throw out something like Tenhou, Renho in her "awakening" state AND in her "awakening" state she will untie her ponytail!!! OR If Shizu power only work on monster like someone predictions here, the match must be fun!. Some note on Koromo - her abiliity to prevent other player to reach Tenpai will shut down most players and monsters. I mean, What the point for being strong or having demonic power if you can't even reach tenpai?? Shizu ability may have disadvantage againist Koromo power, so that she can't really do anything. But with Awai and Saki,.......we will see. EDIT: Oh, someone think like me! Also, Sorry, I changed my post structure a lot after you quoted.
