"That" was a girl?!

Isn't he trained for this sort of thing though? And he seemed like he had experience fighting them before. Perhaps with how fast everything was happening his nerves was just shot that time.

From what I can gather, the world is not modern, otherwise the titans would all be peppered with holes made by depleted uranium shells, or, failing that, simply nuked. Given that people are living in medieval-style cities and still using swords, the story probably takes place in an alternate version of about 1000 years ago.

Some bit of theory time; I'm guess Hannes chickened out of the fight with the titan because it was some new unknown type he had never seen before. That's only reason I could think for the titans to ignore this settlement for 100 years than sudden attack.
Hannes probably hadn't seen a Titan up close before. Remember that he was only a wall guard, and there had been no breaches of the wall itself for 100 years.

They use gas powered 3D gear and gunpowder in combination with canons and rifles - 1000 years is a bit too far

The post-apocalyptic is more plausible.

Yea, but I think it was said the Titans hasn't attacked for close to 100 years, and the only ones that seen action was the recon group that travels outside the town.

Everyone else is in non-combat mode, especially with how hannes and the guards that are suppose to keep watch were just sitting there getting drunk in the afternoon on the clock.

Maybe it's a mutant? The show gave me the impression that normal Titans are not that big.

Considering how often they drink, I'm pretty sure he spent most of the years behind the wall and never saw real Titans, at least for many years.

Besides that one was seriously creepy with that smile. He probably though that he would not be able to take it down at this point. If he dies now, no one will save children so he chose to flee.

Besides we saw what happened to professional squad that tried to fight them. Only arm had come back and they are attacking in groups while he was all alone.

My reaction was "now I gotta re-read the manga again". But the conclusion was the same, there is no more out yet! But seriously that was an awesome adaptation, as good as this manga deserved. I hope they can keep it up.

Yeah sure there is. XD. You could see it in the face I'm pretty sure that titan was female. And there's also I think one in the preview. In some cases, some titans have the chests but it's always barbie doll anatomies regardless of gender.

As I have said before and some others, the story is post apocalyptic. Although I don't know if this is exactly spoiling anything or not but just look up the title of the 1st chapter of the manga.

About Hannes, I feel like he seem to recognize something about that that titan which broke his nerve or something. I mean, he was wearing all that battle gear and seen all the other titans as he was running around town, wh did he specifically freak out about that titan? Either way, it was a good choice he decided to run because if the children dies, he would have never paid the debt. He also followed the mother's last wish. But yes, that titan's smile is just... creepy. I should not have watched that part in the basement with low light... *shivers

I get the feeling that the drawings of the titans look similar to how otakus are depicted. I'm not sure if that has any significance or if it is a political statement in some ways.

Nope, I'm sure he doesn't recognize the titan. As far as I can recall, the only people who have experience fighting the titans where the recon corp/survey corp/scouting legion or whatever you call it. No titan has ever broken the wall for 100 years until the appearance of the colossal titan. Hannes is a stationary guard and their job is just to guard the walls and fight when the wall falls down(which like I said, never happened until the colossal titan's appearance). Therefore stationary guards don't have the experience to fight the titans up close. Hannes was just plain scared out of his pants.

This is what I said in the manga thread a while back. The titans look more real than the humans in the story. Titans look like normal Japanese people to me (the ugly one's, at least).

To me they look like something Hieronymous Bosch or Gustav Dore would've come up with.

The first thing I thought when I saw them (despite having seen them in the manga; everything is just so much...better in this format ) was that someone was going to immediately use it as a troll-face.jpg.

Especially that shot of the one that ended up eating the mother.

Probably, but it is interesting that the author decided to have them look that way.

It is just curious with their looks, as if they could have been experiments gone wrong.

True, although I think the depictions are more towards the realist style of anime, where people are not as attractive. It is interesting that most of the titans are shown as out of shape, while that giant one was shown as muscular. Then again, it might be because the giant one did not have any skin or fat, so he looks that way.

Quite interesting, although the titans look out of shape compared to some of the sculpted features in those paintings.

Yep, it's face like a woman, but the body like most of regular titans, is more like male.
