If anything, it could potentially help close the distance Haru creates between his lowly self and his perceived super awesome flawless handsome by the second best friend. Judging from the conversation Haru had with Taku in ep3, I wouldn't be surprised if Taku dislikes being put on a pedestal by his best friend, moreso if he really is Cyan Pile and has been cheating in his tournaments.

The situation where best friends fight over the girl is pretty typical

And if he might turn out to be a burst linker, which seem to be likely at this point with him being a kendo champion, then that situation is just setting them up to fight each other.

On the subject of the identity of Cyan Pile, I doubt that the meta hints in ep3 are red herrings because when coupled with the in-story hints so far, a few things seem to make a lot of sense. My theory is that

Very interesting episode with lots of new info.
The mystery character... is it really Haru's friend?
The short cable thing was kinda LOL & (#^-^#)
Haru sure unloaded a lot of his frustrations on Chiyu.

If it was just him and him alone then yes it would be fine but that wasn't my point. The problem is when the story blatantly goes out of it's way to make al most every character but Haru have some negative attribute to them. At that point it starts to feel a little forced (and consequently any depth that's added to them as a result will also feel forced). And it's not like I'm forcing myself to think this way either. It's simply the impression I'm getting.

What do you mean, but Haru? Everyone's flawed. Heck, Haru can't even be said to be a messianic protagonist right now.

It's hard to consider Haru that flawed when the story goes out of it's way to compliment him, usually using KYH as a mouthpiece.

Finished up ep 2 last night, and find myself enjoying this series more than I had thought - hmm. Didn't expect the story to veer off into VR fighting games.... Anyway, will watch ep 3 tonight.

I guess this one and the Dusk Maiden x Amnesia are my two biggest surprises of the season....

I think it's over-compensating really. Accel World establishes Haru's flaws from the beginning and they're quite sympathetic and he's a video game badass so it's not that big of a deal. But then they just keep doling out the compliments whilst making it plain how flawed the other characters actually are, so the message ends up being a little too blatant. And lets face it, having low self esteem and being bullied a lot is nowhere near as bad as cheating in competitions and being borderline unfaithful to your boyfriend.

Man, when Haru was moving around his fingers and hands in a *squeeze* manner, my first thought was that he was thinking "I wanna grab that boobies but I shouldn't. I wanna grab that boobies but I musn't." mantra in his head.

By the way, is it just me or does Kawahara like his girls to be soo daring and bold?

They're sympathetic to you, and I suppose to me, but have you seen the vitriol thrown at him earlier in the thread? Besides, sympathetic or not, they're still flaws.

Which till now has done very little for him. Besides, is he that good? We've only seen him play one game, that nobody else played at all.

My theory is that Spoiler for theory: the backdoor Haru found on Chiyuri is the reason Kuroyukihime can never find Cyan Pile on the school network: because Cyan Pile keeps sneaking in through a different network like say... Taku's own school? That also means she won't ever find him by accelerating during assembly, cause he really isn't connected to their net. Also being her boyfriend, he could easily have installed the backdoor in Chiyuri during one of their direct links. She probably wouldn't notice/realise anyway, like how Haru could rummage through her system files in the middle of a heart-to-heart talk. As for his motive, it could have yet to be revealed, or it could just be his way of looking out for Haru (Maybe he knows Haru became Silver Crow and KYH is behind it?). OR I could just be giving him far more credit than due? I'd at least prefer a decent motive besides "Is actually a jerk and just wants to feel good about himself."
