I don't know about movies, but for series you should definitely check out Space Adventure Cobra. It's the sort of show we need more of these days.

Current my 8th favorite anime (highest ranking: 4th), I suggest Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, an emotional masterpiece of the past.

If you're looking for a great anime movie, then you have to download Windaria. It has long been a favorite of mine. This movie is a tale of love, war, dreams and betrayal; it was one of my earliest introductions to anime and the experience has colored my appreciation of every show since then. It is beautiful, with a lyrically haunting plot, full of ambition and sadness.

Might be hard to find, but I definitely recommend Night on the Galactic Railroad. Definitely a must see from the 80s.

And if you don't mind a longer series, Rose of Versaille is certainly a classic.
