Sorry; dynamic content not loaded. Reload?

Hmm... It's possible. There might be one that could be related, but the personality seems a little off for that.

As for Haku, I'm wondering if he is

I guess it's time to bust out the old series' DVDs and watch it for a refresher. Also, for those who didn't know, my avatar that has been the same for many, many years is Benawi from the original Utawarerumono series, even though Aruru was my favorite character.

Actually, I really would love to see what has become of Aruru.

Actually, if this anime follows the second game even remotely faithfully, Aruru WILL makes some appearences, so will a handful of other characters from the first Utawarerumono

I think you can wikipedia the backstory.

Throwing in another point, I really don't think you need to. Obviously things will make some more sense, but no reason to believe the series itself won't tackle all that anyways. Looks to be a new cast just taking place in the same world.

It's not required for enjoying this first episode thus far.

The only thing I want to comment about watching the first series.

Do you like Kuon? Then watch the first series.
This isn't a stand alone series, this is the second part of the Utawarerumono trilogy.

I would appeal to a different side- Do you like feudal Japanese warfare with minimum magic used? Watch the first series.

I'm still wondering if "Umakeko" is something related to Haku's nature or just a very silly gag.

Other than that, the hook of this show seems to be a lazy protag that's not completely useless when it comes down to it. I enjoyed that part. We'll see how the next few episodes go.

The original show had compelling characters and consistently good animation. Which is to say comparisons may be a bit unfair because the original was just an above-average, almost masterpiece-level TV show, really.

But I like that they differentiated the protags. Hakuoro is as cool as a protag can get. It may just take a little while before Haku gets fleshed out.

If I recall correctly, Utawarerumono ends with Hakuoro defeating the evil deity and re-sealing it along with himself.

Haku doesn't seem like him at all, aside from his physique...and reincarnations aren't really something that were ever referenced in the story.

When Hakuoro was possessed by the deity in ancient times, he was used for all kinds of genetic engineering stuff, so Haku could be like a clone of him that was put on ice for some reason. Though at the same time his intelligence and social skills are proof that he lived normally at some point in the past, memories or no. I'm sure that mystery will be gradually brought to light in this series.

Kuon's words about Hakuoro being a long-time legend doesn't mean that couple of hundreds years passed. You just got it wrong.
Oh, I can already guess what the spoiler about Kuon is. I mean, the tail plus her prodigious strength are dead giveaways to anyone that was paying attention. Needless to say, I played the game.

I saw some spoiler material on other sites, but considering it's all in Japanese I can't tell what it even says, much less determine if they are true. Google translate helps a bit, but not much.

So I've gone into this blind and found the opening episode rather enjoyable (kinda reminds me of Spice and Wolf somewhat), but apparently there's a prequel to this? Should I hunt it down and marathon it before episode 2?

I love Haku lol. This guy is the type of person who works hard just so he can be lazy. Kuon is really likable too and she reminds me of Horo from Spice and Wolf. I assume its 26 episodes as well? Great!

I'm putting my theory on Kuon in a spoiler (It could be wrong or right). I didn't view the VN and I only saw the first series anime, so guessing it is kind of fun. I could be completely off-the mark on this though.

Spoiler for Theory on Kuon's Lineage:

Edit: Interesting part is that Kuon has the same VA as Rory from Gate. Haha.

That ear flick when she was unsure what name to write down for him! I'm so in for this anime! <3

I like how he is superlazy but gets his karma right away by Kuon who prevents him from slacking off. She's a bit perverted (or very curious?) though given she watched him "spin his thing" till the third swing mode! XD

I wonder if humans like Haku are a rare thing in this world? How did he come there anyway? He wears a hospital patient uniform, did he die or something like that?

Hmm...I wonder what "monster" Haku & Kuon will face in the next ep. In the first series, they have to deal with a huge tiger (Mutikapa). I hope it's not the huge bird we see in the preview art .
