Thank to titan killed off one-fifth of the human population,no one really care about having the drafting age get lowered to 12.

Then they get trained for the next three years,so of course they look like 15.

Mikasa is hot, Armin is adorable, but Sasha gives me this fuzzy warm feeling.

Let's keep in mind these people have been shut off from the rest of the world for years now.
Thier perception of time may be quite different from us.

I also think that Armin is adorable and I know he's a guy.
What's so wrong saying a guy is adorable?

People complain about grown-up kids in this episode should go and watch Jojo's bizarre adventure. That episode 1 was so manly that i have to readjust my perception of what a 12 year old teenager looks like.

but yeah, I do agree that they should have a 3rd design for this middle period instead of just copy/paste the 15 year old one.

To settle this matter, I have found proof that this is actually the case.
Internet is a wonderful thing, if you are unsure about something you just need to write the quote of a show and you'll find some forum where they talk about it. Of course you need to have at least some basic knowledge to understand (at least partially) and write Japanese

Anyway here it is: http://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp...il/q1460317214

The first guy is confused by Mikasa's statement "これで私と離れずにすんだと思って安心してる" (He's relieved that we won't have to separate anymore), which is the opposite of what Eren is thinking.
The second guy confirms that this is an author's joke, he shows us how Eren and Mikasa do not understand each other such as when Mikasa before says that Eren doesn't need to become a soldier, that was Mikasa's way to comfort him, but Eren thinks she's looking down on him. Notice how Eren doesn't stay enough to listen to Mikasa as she explains that she would go with him in case he failed.

In the end it's Armin that got it right when he said "Look at his eyes, he's totally challenging you". After Mikasa gives her wrong interpretation the looks on the faces of the other three is rather comical (especially Reiner), as they understand how delusional Mikasa is.

So yes, the manga translator messed up big time, probably confused by the fact Mikasa looks sad there.

A bit too late for that. As you can see here the Yomiuri giants are already nicknamed 巨人

It's probably not important to go over specific details. I'm pretty sure the author is not an engineer and he didn't go as far as to check with scientific studies if the equipment would work in reality and how it would work, or how he should specifically design it to create the particular effect of balance that he has on his mind.

What's important is that the drill instructor recognizes that no one would be able to maintain his balance with the kind of defect Eren's equipment has.

I guess they want to give him more time in academy?
No, in the manga they had a 5 year time skip from the fall of the wall to the end of their training and then showed the training in flashbacks throughout the plot when it was deemed necessary to show exposition. The anime is going another route, there's a about 2 year timeskip to the start of their training, they will be showing the training instead of using flashbacks and then we'll probably have a 3 year timeskip to the end of the training.

They are 12/13 so by the time the training ends (3 years) they should be 15/16. Honestly I'm expecting them to use the exact same design as their 12 year old selves when they are finally 15 (as if they don't want to make two redesigns).

Yeah, I can see why one would prefer the "mistranslated" version of her line in manga - her expression there was indeed way more depressive. Depressively accurate mindreading fits in the general mood. And everyone's shock seems to fit both ways - whether Mikasa is delusional (official translation) or realistic (scanlation, and now one fansub too) - still a surprise, they didn't even notice Eren was glaring specifically at her.

Spoiler for depressive vol.4 ch.16 vs lipstick ep.03:

The basic principle isn't complicated. They shift their center of mass by moving their bodies (extending his arm straight up, for example, would raise his center. If it goes above the ropes, it should flip him.) It's similar to gymnastics rings, except the ropes are hooked to their waists instead of them having to hold them with their hands. And they're not expected to make amazing figures, just to be kinda stable and upright when in rest position...

Their gear provides momentum by rewinding their ropes. (Batman has a handheld version. Theirs is bigger and tied to their waist.)

Of course, whether it's actually possible to pack that much power on their small, light equipment with their technology (or ours...), and whether it's possible to train human beings to adjust that fast, that well is another story. Oh, and there's also the problem of launching their spikes, having them stick to a wall, and then calling them back. Those are the bits that require suspension of disbelief.

I'm not sure it changes much but the explanation in the manga for the faulty equipment is different:

No, just parroting what she said about the potato. Although let's be honest, she looks 21 just like the rest of them.

I don't know what kind of damage would do that, but yeah - having the buckles too low would make him unable to stay upright. (As I think I wrote earlier.)

My "beef" was, the instructor should have seen it right away. Eren's trouble couldn't be explained by incompetence alone.

Wow, after watching episode 3, I'm really liking this show. Glad that I kept this even after that first ultra-depressing episode 1. There are a lot of interesting characters besides the main trio. And I'm really curious to Mikasa's backstory and how she ended up at Alen's home. I LOLed really hard at how she totally misunderstood Alen's gaze.

Just a guess, but I think the fact that the ropes are attached to the waist instead of an upper part of their body is meant so they can flip easily at will. The training is meant to make them learn how to control that.

In other words the equipment is meant to give an equal probability of a body to be upside or upside down if left to itself.

Supposedly the equipment was damaged in a way to disrupt this balance. I'm not engineer but I don't think that as something absolutely impossible.

For example if you were tied by your feet, would you be able to stand up right? There's no way you could. The center is not shifted that high in our case but it's probably high enough to cause a lot of problems.
