May I point out that Kanata has never been to the ocean. Suggesting Helvetia is a landlocked country.
Maps confirm, this.

If you're referring to episode 7 who said the war was restricted to Helvetian soil only? Or that body of water could be just a lake. It is general knowledge that the oceans are lifeless.

Also Helvetia is the female national personification of Switzerland. French is one of the four national languages of Switzerland. We know Helvetians speak and write French. English isn't unknown either. Unofficially English is the fifth spoken language in Switzerland. Hence the girls able to read Tank-kun's displays.

Note also the Fortress was a Japanese school. Switzerland is known for having such schools.

You know while on WMDs, here's an interesting fact. Zyklon B (well-known for being the pesticide used in concentration camps) was developed at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry and Elektrochemistry led by a German-Jewish himself named Fritz Haber. Fritz Haber is known as the 'father of chemical warfare' for his contributions to WWI (obvious reasons). In regards to gas warfare, Faber notes "death was death, by whatever means it was inflicted". Ironic twist of fate?
Tragically simple sort of fellow. Chemists like Playfair kept inisiting that early chemical weapons were more humane than explosive shells, since most of the victims (for example, Hitler) recovered to some extent. I'd say to him that it matters whether or not someone dies with respect and dignity; chemical and conventional weapons don't have any of that.

I thought the Emperor would want to keep tabs on his hostage, sorry, intended, but that would be an excellent way to expand on the mysterious angel fossil.

Well some ppl have arrived at the conclusion that the whole thing is a gambit on the Emperor's part. He now has a reason to visit and stay at the fortress. Cue SnW harem H-game as he conquers the maidens one by one...

After some adequately civil discussion with my circle of otaku, we concluded that the ending of Sora no Woto is mediocre... but only if the standards of war movies are applied. Otherwise it's --well-- just how it's supposed to end. :-/

Why should the standards of war movies be applied? Judge by how the ending affected you, and how well it concluded the story.

I assume that means that everyone in a country that borders an ocean has been there. I remember reading that in the USA before the Model T Ford the average person never traveled more than 50 miles from where they were born. Given the lack of transportation, the fact that there was a war, the probability that nomansland extended along the ocean, and the ocean is dead and possibly dangerous to enter, it is not surprising that she never saw it. And, I clicked on your map shortcut and saw absolutely nothing that proved Helvetia is landlocked. I saw no map of the country, just the area they were in. While Switzerland might be part of Helvetia, I suspect that it also includes parts of France and possibly Belgium and Spain. The terrain that they showed did not look like what I saw of Switzerland. Of course, since I have seen anime where you drive out of New York City straight into the western deserts, that doesn't mean a lot.

Because the scenery porn was based on Cuenca, Spain.

Go read the Speculah Charts they are both informative and fun.

Nonetheless all other evidence points to Helvetia was Switzerland. Rome are German-Romanians that decided to revive the Holy Roman Empire in Europe.

Since everything is conjecture, unless at some point the people making the anime post something definite, it is useless arguing. It is all opinion and everyone's opinion is different.

Filicia and her old platoon visited an oceanfront, so unless they were fighting within the Roman Empire at that point of the war (which isn't impossible), it would imply that Helvetia has a coast.

Wow, what an episode what a series, I really liked it. I'll eagerly await the OVA episodes. It wrapped itself up rather nicely, but I wouldn't mind another season.

What i mean was that the ending is "good enough" for me, but it's not in the "definitely good" category. And that Sora no Woto is not a war movie. (Certain posts in this thread that keep on discussing real-world military make me facepalm.)

Just finished the series. Overall it was a good but not great series. Felt it good have been better, it tried to mix some slice of life with serious/drama moments which didn't get the best results at times. Haibane Renmei did it much better.

Man! I'm looking for the OST for this but it's not anywhere, even though it's out! I want that French song (along with Amazing Grace)!

The part where the tanks runs was great. Too bad we didn't get to see the artillery on its back.
