As for the actual reason, I remember reading an interesting point a while ago (can't remember where, was it in this thread?) - when they get home after school, more and more kids tend to play video games instead of watching TV, which is what they (we?) all used to do years ago when game consoles were still a rarity...

Not necessarily. Sazae-san and Chibi Maruko-chan are more like The Simpsons of Japan (though perhaps more like The Flintstones in spirit, i.e. not quite as vulgar as The Simpsons can be - Crayon Shin-chan would be closer to the latter).

Also, @Olivia_688, that post you quoted is almost 7 years old. More than half of those shows aren't even running anymore.

Star Driver's ratings are disappointing, but I'll bet that's got more to do with the timeslot: it seems like most of its fanbase just records the show for later. Maybe Star Driver will do good in the DVD sales. Still, it's disappointing to see the timeslot go from what it used to be to what it is now: I always liked the one year format that doroku had.

And Digimon... I think Toei wishes they stuck with Fuji Television. It probably would've gotten triple the ratings if it aired there on Sunday mornings before One Piece.

I'm surprised by Madoka Magica's ratings,but is it due to timeslot just like many other animes seem to have trouble getting a good time to air the episodes?

^ Late night anime always have low ratings, no matter how well it sales or popular it is online.

Uh, 2-3% in ratings isn't bad, although yes it's low for that timeslot. And Star Driver has good DVD/BD sales.

2-3% in ratings IS bad. That's a rating you would expect from a late night show, but this is an afternoon timeslot. Getting these kinds of results is exactly why new shows hardly get on afternoon or primetime anymore.

But like I said before, it's not really Star Driver's fault. The intended audience for that slot simply are not at home at those times; they usually are out of the house. I believe someone mentioned that Star Driver was the fourth most recorded program when it started airing, and yes, the DVD/BD sales are successful (12,000+ for the first release is very good).

I guess at the very least, ratings are a bit better for the show in the Kansai region, although that seems to be the case for anime in general. I wonder if that means the Kansai region has a larger percentage of kids and teenagers.

correct me if im wrong but 2-3% rating on this time slot is fine, if my memory is right only gundam 00 season 2 manage to get a 4% rating on this time slot and even Code Geass and Sengoku Basara 2 on this time slot has only manage a 2-3% rating like Star Driver, again correct me if im wrong

and yes im glad too that Star Driver is doing fine on DVD and BluRay Disc Sales

You can't really say that something in the 2-3% range is 'fine'. Even though they've become the standard for the timeslot, these numbers are still lower than what is to be expected for a 5pm Sunday timeslot. Technically, Code Geass R2 and Sengoku Basara 2 bombed too.

Once again, Nichigo is worse than Doroku used to be with less people watching TV at home so we can't hope for these shows to constantly get numbers in the 5.*% range, but I'd guess the producers were aiming for something along the lines of Gundam 00's performance when they moved the timeslot.

Now, as much as I love the source material, I doubt Ao no Exorcist is going to give Nichigo a real boost for the upcoming spring & summer (I would love to be wrong, though). We might have to wait until this fall to witness a real change, since there is that new Gundam series in the making that could be taking over the block.

Destinyblade Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2007	Star Driver's ratings are disappointing, but I'll bet that's got more to do with the timeslot: it seems like most of its fanbase just records the show for later. Maybe Star Driver will do good in the DVD sales. Still, it's disappointing to see the timeslot go from what it used to be to what it is now: I always liked the one year format that doroku had. And Digimon... I think Toei wishes they stuck with Fuji Television. It probably would've gotten triple the ratings if it aired there on Sunday mornings before One Piece.
