So my wisdom teeth have finally started popping out and I know now for sure since it feels like my gums are tearing open, I think the part with nerves must be exposed because any bits of food that go anywhere near causes considerable pain and I can't wholly avoid it even without chewing using that side of the mouth. Is there any way to alleviate this whole thing?

I share the same experience myself (hmmmm, it's still growing and part of my jaw hurts sometimes), well, if have the time and cash, visit a dentist. I'm kinda sure that pain medications won't be of used ( based on experience) at this time.

Extraction, if your gumline doesn't have the space for it.

I have had 3 Wisdom Teeth taken out so far (the fourth one seems to be shy in coming out) on two separate occasions.

Go to a trusted dentist and get his/her opinion. If extraction is necessary, make sure the dentist is a reliable one. My first extraction was from an Army Dentist, and the post-experience was "LIVING HELL".

My subsequent extraction was from a private specialist, and while costlier, didn't make me want to die after the extraction, and much less painful.

It takes about a week to recover from an extraction (I was given a week MC in both cases), and two weeks for a "full" recovery. The first 3-4 days will be the toughest, and the most important, as you cannot afford to get the hole left behind by the extraction to get infected by food bits.

Once the hole seals up (usually by the fourth day), eating becomes much easier. You will probably want to just chew on the side without the extraction though.

Don't be silly, you can survive an extraction of 4 by a military dentist at once! I did live without any permanent damage! Trust in the SAF Medical Corps!

Extraction is technically the only viable solution for impacting teeth, but get an X-ray first. Just brush gently, floss and avoid alcohol thereafter.

Ehhh..is getting them yanked out really the only way? I'm already somewhat apprehensive about visiting the dentist, I need to be in a mental state when I have the courage to keep going back later down the track you know?

More seriously- It seems you guys did get them extracted? Is it something people normally do? Are there any medical implications if you don't?

Well you could leave it in there to impact your other molar, then suffer permanent brain damage from that constant pain.

Actually pulling off the teeth is alot more painful than having the teeth impact the others. Except that not taking them out will result in serious permanent pain and possible brain damage (or what a cuddly loli dental nurse told me).

Go get a jaw X-ray first and see which ones need to be removed. If I remember correctly, it is calculated by per-tooth, most people remove all 4 at once and suffer for a couple weeks or so eating nothing but porridge.

They will also give you a hollow blunted syringe to wash out those holes. Don't use mouthwash; they can open them up. The painkillers are fine.

That would be your answer.

Actually you have to get an X-ray first to see the severity of the impacting teeth. Mine impacted horizontally for all, which are dangerous, some impact at a slanted angle so the dentist didn't bother about extracting them, since it only results in slightly crooked teeth.

The lucky ones would have their teeth come up cleanly without any impact.

P.S Usually impacting teeth start out at 16-18, most people have them removed by 19-21. You must have been a little boy to have them come out so late.

I'm not aware of any troublesome wisdom teeth giving you brain damage, though I have heard that infected gums/teeth can lead to cardiovascular diseases, heart attacks or maybe even blood poisoning, so it's best to prevent it from getting that far.

The extraction itself shouldn't hurt, assuming your dentist will partially sedate you before actually doing so. The only real things to worry about are excessive gum bleeding and pain after the sedation wears off (even though it doesn't always happen). And if more than one tooth needs to be pulled, you'll be looking at a few visits at the very least, as I doubt he'd pull them all in one sitting.

So, yeah, just go to your dentist and ask him what to do. Maybe you can get by with just proper oral hygiene, but be prepared for the worst just in case. It's better than just sitting around and wait till you have no other choice but to get them out.

The theory is that the impacting teeth push against your other teeth and cause immense pain. Your jawline has a direct link to the central nerves, and it is either you damage the nerves or your brain.

Mine insisted on getting all four out at once (one times good one and get it over with). By the time the second one was out, my nerves were deafened to the point which they became numb. The last 2 came out without a hitch.

What're the likely price points? I remember people complaining about the ridiculous costs of dental work and that worries me, as much as I like my IQ where it is I don't have a spare coupla grand to drop..

Price points? I don't know about your side, but I have an acquaintance who was an anestheist working in a dental clinic saying that most of the cost comes from the anesthetics rather than the extraction process, while a dentist once told me that the diamond-tip drills are the real expensive equipment in there.

Since the military paid for mine, I got it FOC. Outside there it would have cost S$1000 per tooth.

P.S Can I ask for a mod to shift this to the Wisdom Tooth thread? This is becoming a discussion.
